Everything to Know About Booking a South Carolina deep sea fishing charter

What are the best deep sea fishing charters in South Carolina?

What is offshore in South Carolina all about?

Offshore fishing in South Carolina offers anglers a thrilling opportunity to explore deeper waters teeming with a diverse range of marine life. Departing from coastal hubs like Charleston, Myrtle Beach, and Hilton Head, offshore charters venture into the Atlantic Ocean to target a variety of prized game fish. One of the most renowned species sought offshore is the Atlantic sailfish, prized for its acrobatic leaps and challenging fight. These majestic fish are typically targeted during warmer months when they migrate closer to the South Carolina coast in search of baitfish.

Other popular offshore targets include mahi-mahi (dolphinfish), known for their vibrant colors and delicious flesh, and wahoo, prized for their speed and powerful strikes. These species are often found near offshore structures like reefs, wrecks, and underwater ledges, which attract baitfish and create ideal hunting grounds for larger predators. Trolling with artificial lures or rigged baits is a common technique used to entice these fast-swimming species, providing anglers with an exhilarating experience as they battle these powerful fish.

South Carolina's offshore waters also offer opportunities for bottom fishing enthusiasts targeting species such as grouper, snapper, and various types of seabass. Anglers can drop baited rigs to the ocean floor near natural reefs or artificial structures, where these bottom-dwelling fish congregate. Bottom fishing in South Carolina can yield impressive catches, with some species reaching substantial sizes and providing a rewarding challenge for anglers of all ages and skill levels. Whether seeking trophy game fish or a delicious dinner, offshore fishing in South Carolina promises memorable adventures and abundant opportunities on the open sea.

What are the most popular months to go offshore in South Carolina?

Offshore fishing seasons in South Carolina vary throughout the year, offering anglers diverse opportunities to target a wide range of species in different conditions. Spring marks the beginning of offshore fishing season as water temperatures begin to rise, prompting the migration of pelagic species closer to the coast. This time of year is ideal for targeting species like king mackerel, cobia, and Spanish mackerel, which move into shallower waters to feed on baitfish migrating along the coast. Anglers often use trolling techniques with live bait or artificial lures to entice these fast-swimming fish, providing exciting action on the open ocean.

As summer arrives, offshore fishing in South Carolina reaches its peak with warmer waters attracting larger pelagic species such as mahi-mahi, wahoo, and sailfish. These fish are often found around offshore structures, weed lines, and temperature breaks where they hunt for smaller prey. Trolling remains a popular technique, but anglers may also encounter success using live bait or drifting over productive areas. The calm seas and longer daylight hours of summer create optimal conditions for extended offshore fishing trips, allowing anglers to pursue trophy catches and enjoy the beauty of South Carolina's coastal waters.

Fall brings a transition in offshore fishing as water temperatures gradually cool, prompting some pelagic species to migrate southward. However, this season also offers excellent opportunities for bottom fishing enthusiasts targeting grouper, snapper, and various species of seabass near natural reefs and artificial structures. These bottom-dwelling fish are often more active as they prepare for winter, making fall a prime time to reel in impressive catches while enjoying the scenic views and moderate weather offshore. Overall, the changing seasons in South Carolina provide a dynamic offshore fishing experience, catering to both seasoned anglers and newcomers alike looking to explore the bountiful waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

What techniques are popular for offshore in South Carolina?

Offshore fishing in South Carolina encompasses a variety of types and techniques tailored to the diverse marine habitats and species found in deeper waters. One prevalent technique is trolling, where anglers trail lines behind a moving boat equipped with artificial lures or rigged baits to attract pelagic species such as king mackerel, mahi-mahi, and sailfish. Trolling allows anglers to cover large areas of water efficiently, targeting fish that are actively feeding near the surface or along underwater structures like weed lines or temperature breaks.

Another popular offshore technique is deep-sea bottom fishing, which targets species dwelling near the ocean floor. Anglers typically use heavy tackle and baited rigs to reach depths where fish like grouper, snapper, and seabass congregate around natural reefs, wrecks, and artificial structures. Bottom fishing requires patience and skill to navigate the rugged terrain while enticing these bottom-dwelling species to bite. This method can yield impressive catches and provides anglers with a rewarding challenge as they battle powerful fish against the ocean currents.

For those seeking a more specialized approach, South Carolina's offshore waters offer opportunities for jigging and live bait fishing. Jigging involves vertically dropping weighted lures or jigs to various depths to mimic prey movements, enticing fish like amberjack, cobia, and tuna. Live bait fishing, on the other hand, involves presenting live baitfish or squid near known hotspots or structure to attract predatory fish looking for an easy meal. Both techniques require finesse and awareness of fish behavior, making them favored choices among anglers targeting specific offshore species known for their strength and fighting ability.

What species are popular for offshore in South Carolina?

Offshore fishing in South Carolina offers a diverse range of species that attract anglers seeking both sport and culinary delights. One of the most prized catches is the mahi-mahi, known for its vibrant colors and acrobatic leaps. These pelagic fish are abundant in South Carolina's offshore waters, especially around weed lines, debris, and temperature breaks where they hunt for smaller fish and squid. Mahi-mahi are typically targeted using trolling techniques with brightly colored lures or live bait, providing anglers with thrilling fights and impressive catches.

Another sought-after species is the wahoo, renowned for its speed and powerful strikes. Wahoo are commonly found in deeper offshore waters, often near underwater structures such as ledges, reefs, and drop-offs. Anglers targeting wahoo often use high-speed trolling techniques with large lures or rigged baits to entice these aggressive predators. Their sharp teeth and strong swimming abilities make them a challenging yet rewarding target for offshore anglers looking to test their skills against one of the fastest fish in the ocean.

For those interested in bottom fishing, South Carolina's offshore waters offer opportunities to catch a variety of reef-dwelling species such as grouper, snapper, and various types of seabass. These bottom fish are often found near natural reefs, wrecks, and artificial structures where they feed on smaller fish and crustaceans. Anglers typically use heavy tackle and baited rigs to reach depths where these species congregate, providing a satisfying challenge and the chance to reel in sizeable specimens. Whether targeting pelagic species like mahi-mahi and wahoo or bottom-dwelling reef fish, offshore fishing in South Carolina promises memorable experiences and abundant opportunities for anglers of all levels.

This Charter was a BLAST! I booked this 8 hour charter for my husband’s birthday. His biggest dream since a little kid was to go out deep-sea fishing for big game fish specifically a king mackerel! Well they sure make my husband’s dream come true!!! We both caught our limit on what your allowed to take home (and more which we had to throw back) of that’s right…yep you guessed it….HE CAUGHT KING MACKEREL!!!! From our first step on the boat the captain and his deckhand made us feel so comfortable, like you’re just hanging out fishing with a couple of friends! They answered all my questions which trust me was a lot! They are both so friendly, down to earth, very hardworking and just a lot of fun! From start to finish the captain always made sure we were in the best spot to catch fish and the deckhand made sure we didn’t have to take care of anything except for having a great time. We had a blast with him the entire 8 hours! He took care of everything. He made sure all the poles stayed in the water and was right there bringing the fish on board when we got them to the boat and he even cleaned, cut and bagged them all up when we got to the dock. He didn’t sit down not one time! We would recommend these 2 guys to anybody who is looking for a deep-sea charter trip!!! They are the best and I promise you won’t be disappointed!!! If you want to catch big game fish and have the experience of a lifetime then these 2 are the charter to call! Thanks for making my husbands birthday unforgettable and the best birthday ever,! We will be repeat customers!
