Everything to Know About Booking a Corpus Christi redfish fishing charter

What are the best redfish fishing charters in Corpus Christi?

What is redfish fishing in Corpus Christi all about?

Redfish, also known as red drum, are a prized species among anglers in Corpus Christi, offering thrilling battles and memorable fishing experiences. These hard-fighting fish are known for their bronze-colored scales, distinctive black spot near their tail, and powerful runs when hooked. Redfish inhabit a variety of habitats in Corpus Christi, including marshes, flats, bays, and estuaries, providing anglers with ample opportunities to target them year-round.

One of the most popular methods for targeting redfish in Corpus Christi is sight casting, which involves spotting the fish in shallow waters and presenting baits or lures directly to them. Anglers often sight cast for redfish in the flats, marshes, and along the edges of mangrove islands, where the fish are known to feed on crustaceans, baitfish, and other prey. This technique requires stealth and precision casting to avoid spooking the wary fish, making it a challenging yet rewarding pursuit for anglers.

Another effective technique for targeting redfish in Corpus Christi is using live or cut bait, such as shrimp, mullet, or crab, presented on a bottom rig or Carolina rig. Anglers often fish for redfish around oyster beds, grass flats, and channels, where the fish are known to congregate in search of food. Additionally, artificial lures such as soft plastic swimbaits, spoons, and topwater plugs can be highly effective for enticing strikes from redfish, especially when fishing in shallow waters or areas with submerged structure. With its diverse range of habitats and abundance of redfish, Corpus Christi offers anglers the opportunity for exciting and rewarding redfish fishing adventures.

What are the most popular months to fish for redfish in Corpus Christi?

In Corpus Christi, the seasons for redfish fishing offer anglers opportunities year-round, with different techniques and locations proving effective depending on the time of year. During the spring months, from March through May, redfish become more active as water temperatures rise, leading them to move into shallow waters such as flats, marshes, and estuaries. Anglers can target redfish during this time using a variety of techniques, including sight casting with artificial lures or live bait, as well as fishing around structure such as oyster beds and grass flats.

As summer arrives in Corpus Christi, typically from June through August, redfish remain plentiful in the area, although they may move into slightly deeper waters to seek cooler temperatures. Summer presents excellent opportunities for anglers to target redfish around channels, tidal creeks, and deeper sections of bays and estuaries. Live bait fishing with shrimp or mullet, as well as casting artificial lures such as spoons or soft plastic swimbaits, can yield successful catches during the summer months.

In the fall, from September through November, redfish in Corpus Christi begin to exhibit their characteristic feeding behavior in preparation for the winter months. As water temperatures begin to cool, redfish become more active and aggressive, making them easier to target for anglers. Fall is an excellent time to fish for redfish in shallow waters, particularly around marshes, flats, and grass beds, where the fish congregate to feed on baitfish and crustaceans. Whether targeting redfish in the spring, summer, or fall, Corpus Christi offers anglers a wealth of opportunities to pursue this prized species throughout the year.

What techniques are popular for catching redfish in Corpus Christi?

Redfish fishing in Corpus Christi offers anglers a variety of effective techniques to pursue these hard-fighting and sought-after fish. One popular method is sight casting, particularly in shallow waters such as flats, marshes, and along mangrove shorelines. Anglers use polarized sunglasses to spot redfish cruising or tailing in the shallows, then carefully present baits or lures to entice strikes. Sight casting requires stealthy approach and precise casting to avoid spooking the fish, making it a challenging yet rewarding technique for targeting redfish in Corpus Christi.

Another effective technique for targeting redfish in Corpus Christi is using live or cut bait, presented on a bottom rig or Carolina rig. Redfish are known to feed on a variety of prey, including shrimp, mullet, and crab, making them susceptible to well-presented baits. Anglers often fish around structure such as oyster beds, jetties, and grass flats, where redfish congregate in search of food. Additionally, artificial lures such as soft plastic swimbaits, spoons, and topwater plugs can be highly effective for enticing strikes from redfish, especially when fishing in shallow waters or areas with submerged structure.

Vertical jigging is another technique favored by anglers targeting redfish in Corpus Christi, particularly in deeper waters or around structure such as oil rigs and artificial reefs. Anglers use heavy metal jigs to mimic the movement of injured baitfish, dropping them vertically through the water column to attract the attention of redfish lurking below. Jigging can be highly effective for enticing strikes from redfish, particularly when they are holding tight to structure or feeding near the bottom. With its versatility and ability to mimic natural prey, vertical jigging is a go-to technique for anglers seeking to hook into redfish in Corpus Christi.

What other species are popular in Corpus Christi?

Corpus Christi offers anglers a diverse range of species to target aside from redfish, providing ample opportunities for exciting fishing adventures. One such species is the speckled trout, also known as spotted seatrout, which inhabits the bays, flats, and estuaries of Corpus Christi. Speckled trout are prized for their delicious flesh and are known for their aggressive strikes, making them a favorite among anglers. Anglers often target speckled trout using live bait such as shrimp or mullet, as well as artificial lures such as soft plastic jigs or topwater plugs. With its abundance of productive fishing grounds, Corpus Christi offers anglers the chance to reel in trophy-sized speckled trout throughout the year.

Another popular species for anglers to target in Corpus Christi is the flounder, known for its unique flat appearance and delectable taste. Flounder inhabit the sandy flats, channels, and nearshore reefs of the area, where they lie in wait to ambush prey. Anglers typically target flounder using live bait such as mullet, shrimp, or mud minnows, as well as artificial lures such as soft plastic swimbaits or jig heads. With its abundance of productive flounder habitat, Corpus Christi offers anglers the opportunity to hook into trophy-sized catches.

For anglers seeking offshore adventures, Corpus Christi also offers opportunities to target species such as king mackerel, snapper, and mahi-mahi. King mackerel, also known as kingfish, are fast-swimming predators that inhabit offshore reefs, wrecks, and oil rigs, providing anglers with thrilling battles and delicious table fare. Snapper species such as red snapper and vermilion snapper are also abundant in the offshore waters of Corpus Christi, offering anglers the chance to reel in trophy-sized catches while bottom fishing around reefs and structure. Additionally, mahi-mahi, with their vibrant colors and acrobatic fights, are a favorite among offshore anglers in Corpus Christi, providing exciting opportunities for trolling and live bait fishing adventures.

    Trip: Aransas Pass Bay Fishing

My son and I hired Capt. Mark for a 4 hour bay fishing trip. The first few hours were very slow. My son caught a keeper trout and had a nice Red on that broke the line. We were anchored up and fishing with Live Croakers. At the end of our 4 hours, Capt. Mark asked if we would like to fish for Reds using top water baits (Zara Spooks). We agreed and Mark took us to an area that was shallow and you could see the Reds working. My son had two or three blowups on his line and I had one. None of the strikes yielded a fish. We did fish for about 7 hours and Capt. Mark worked hard to put us on the fish. At the end of the day, we only had the one keeper trout. My son and I are both experienced anglers but rarely fish salt water. We used Mark's equipment (spinning rigs) and we are more accustomed to Basit Casters. All in all we had a good time and Capt. Mark was a pleasure to fish with. We did expect to catch more fish on a guided trip but, it's called fishing for a reason. Not sure we will be doing another guided bay fishing trip in the near future, but I would give Capt. Mark another try.

We took a charter for three people with varying levels of experience. Captain Joe was great at catering to each persons ability level, made everyone feel at ease and worked hard to put us on the fish. I would definitely recommend Captain Joe and will be using him again in the future!
