Pensacola — this week’s fishing report (early May)
Overview
- Strong, multi-area bite right now: surf, inshore/backwaters, nearshore reefs/wrecks and offshore all producing when conditions allow.
- Water temps are warming (upper 60s–low 70s reported), bait is moving in, and fish are active from the beach out to the wrecks and ledges.
- Wind and frontal passages will still create short weather windows — plan trips around calmer days.

What’s biting
- Surf / Beach: Pompano run in full swing (also whiting, some drum). Spanish mackerel are showing up along the beach; king mackerel will be more common as the month progresses.
- Pier: Spanish mackerel and early kings near mid-to-end of the pier; night fishing around lights can produce.
- Inshore / Bays / Flats: Big spotted trout and redfish are active on the flats and around grass edges; flounder and slot reds in some areas.
- Nearshore / Reefs & Wrecks: Vermilion (vermilion) snapper, amberjack, grouper and a steady reef/wreck bite. Mangrove snapper and scamp show on structure.
- Offshore / Deep-water: When weather permits, bottom fishing and deep drops are producing tilefish and solid bottom action. Trolling lanes are starting to produce kings in places.
Baits, tackle & techniques
- Surf: Bottom rigs with fresh shrimp or sand fleas for pompano/whiting; small jigs or gotcha plugs for Spanish.
- Pier: Cut bait for bottom species; live bait for kings and bigger pelagics.
- Inshore: Live shrimp, soft plastics, or topwater/traction plugs around bait pods and grass edges for trout and reds.
- Nearshore/Offshore: Sabiki rigs for tink
Spanish mackerel have been and still are the easy fun target. Trout and redfish are still getting better and better. Light tackle bottom fishing has produced nice catches of vermillion snapper along with some big red grouper and a variety of other keeper fish like lane snapper, scamp grouper, and trigger fish.
Cobia are finally worth taking a longer trip to go look for along the beaches in 20-40 feet of water. It only takes one 30-50 lb fish to make the trip a success!

We definitely had a good trip with Captain harold.
He put us on fish all day long on our 10hr trip. We caught a lot of fish between the 6 of us at every location captain harold stopped us at.
We recommend this guide to anyone who wants to have fun catching fish.
Was a great experience for my inexperienced family. First we caught bait fish jigging a little offshore. Using a 5 hook rig almost every time we hooked multiple fish. Catching 4 to 5 was not uncommon. Then we went about 8 miles offshore to fish in about 90’ of water. Everyone caught fish. Just a note that catching a 24” amberjack in 90’ of water will wear a person out. Though we caught lots of fish only had 3 of keeper size. My entire group said they would do it again.
We had a great time with Jonathan. He was patient with us three amateurs and put us on some nice redfish. My grandson who is 7 had a blast catching his first redfish. Thanks again.
James was a great Captain and we really enjoyed our time with him! We were hoping to be able to have more fish to take home with us but I know that some days are better than others when fishing. It was an overall really good experience!
Honestly, we were very disappointed in our trip. The beginning was fine. As time went on, David ‘s language was a bit rough with choice words that we didn’t need to hear. His driving of the boat in rough water was way too fast and both of our backs are still hurting a week later . And we may be a bit older- but both in good shape. At the end of the trip- just had us casting in grass. Never been on a trip where at least cold bottles of water weren’t offered or available . Would never recommend. Expensive trip for a few fish and not as we have experienced before on other fishing outings. We did give a nice tip 20% because that’s who we are . Wish him the best in the future.
Good communication and flexible in scheduling. Provided good instruction to a beginner which resulted in success. Captain Tim showed great knowledge of the species and habitat. We would recommend this Captain!
Thx you for the best trip today!! David and Brandon made sure we all had bait, got the fish we caught into the boat and then flayed. We caught amberjack and red snapper!
