Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What is mangrove snapper fishing in Key Largo all about?

In Key Largo, Florida, mangrove snapper are a popular and abundant species found in the area's diverse coastal waters. These fish, also known as gray snapper, inhabit a variety of habitats including mangrove shorelines, rocky outcrops, bridges, and offshore reefs. Mangrove snapper are prized by anglers for their delicious flavor, strong fighting abilities, and cooperative nature, making them a sought-after target for both novice and experienced fishermen alike.

Anglers targeting mangrove snapper in Key Largo often employ a variety of techniques to entice these fish into biting. One effective method is bottom fishing using live bait such as shrimp, pilchards, or small baitfish. Anglers typically rig their bait with a small hook and light fluorocarbon leader to present a natural-looking offering to the snapper. Additionally, anglers may use cut bait or squid as an alternative to live bait when targeting mangrove snapper, particularly around structure-rich areas where these fish are known to congregate.

While mangrove snapper can be caught year-round in Key Largo, their abundance may vary depending on factors such as water temperature, tides, and baitfish availability. Anglers often find success targeting mangrove snapper during the warmer months when these fish are more active and feed more aggressively. Whether fishing from shore, a boat, or a kayak, anglers in Key Largo have ample opportunities to target mangrove snapper and enjoy the thrill of reeling in these prized fish in the scenic waters of the Florida Keys.

What are the most popular months to fish for mangrove snapper fishing in Key Largo?

In Key Largo, Florida, mangrove snapper can be found year-round, but their abundance and behavior can vary depending on the season. Generally, the prime season for targeting mangrove snapper in Key Largo spans from late spring through early fall. During this time, warmer water temperatures and longer daylight hours stimulate increased feeding activity among mangrove snapper, making them more active and receptive to anglers' baits.

Summer months, in particular, tend to see a peak in mangrove snapper populations in Key Largo's coastal waters. As temperatures rise, these fish become more prolific around structure-rich areas such as mangrove shorelines, rocky outcrops, and offshore reefs. Anglers targeting mangrove snapper during the summer season often find success using live bait such as shrimp or pilchards, as well as cut bait or squid, presented near the bottom around these structures.

While mangrove snapper can be caught year-round in Key Largo, their abundance may fluctuate during the cooler months when water temperatures drop. During the winter season, mangrove snapper may move to deeper waters or seek shelter in warmer areas to maintain their preferred temperature range. However, with proper knowledge of seasonal patterns and fishing techniques, anglers in Key Largo can enjoy consistent success targeting mangrove snapper throughout the year, ensuring a rewarding and enjoyable fishing experience in the waters of the Florida Keys.

What techniques are popular for catching mangrove snapper in Key Largo?

Anglers in Key Largo employ various techniques to target mangrove snapper, a prized species found in the area's coastal waters. One effective method is bottom fishing using live bait such as shrimp, pilchards, or small baitfish. Anglers typically rig their bait with a small hook and light fluorocarbon leader to present a natural-looking offering to the snapper. Mangrove snapper are often found near structure-rich areas such as mangrove shorelines, rocky outcrops, bridges, and offshore reefs, where they seek shelter and ambush prey.

Another successful technique for targeting mangrove snapper in Key Largo is jigging. Anglers use small jigs tipped with bait or soft plastics to entice bites from these fish. Jigging allows anglers to cover a larger area and present their bait in a more enticing manner, mimicking the movement of small baitfish or crustaceans. This method is particularly effective when fishing around structure, as it allows anglers to present their bait at different depths and angles to entice strikes from mangrove snapper hiding in crevices or under overhangs.

Additionally, anglers may find success using cut bait or squid when targeting mangrove snapper in Key Largo. By presenting chunks of bait on a hook and allowing them to drift naturally with the current, anglers can attract snapper from a distance and entice them into biting. This method is especially effective when fishing around offshore reefs or wrecks where mangrove snapper are known to congregate. Another sought-after species in Key Largo is the redfish, prized for its strong fights and excellent table fare. Redfish can be found in the area's shallow flats, mangrove-lined creeks, and tidal channels, where they feed on crustaceans and small baitfish. My dad and I were able to squeeze in on a charter with Captain Eric fairly last minute which was awesome! He got us both on some sea trout first thing in the morning, lined us up on some tarpon but before I was able to take any shots on the fly rod, we spooked a tarpon and in came the bull sharks. We buzzed over to a different flat where I had shots at both snook and redfish. I didn’t end up making any of my shots with the fly rod but this was also my first saltwater fly fishing experience as well as my first guided trip so it was all pretty new to me. I’m just stoked we were able to get out in the first place. But I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Captain Eric and I certainly wouldn’t turn down another opportunity to have him guide us! He’s quiet but very focused and knowledgeable about the marine life and was able to give me casting tips as well with the fly rods. Thank you again for squeezing us in Eric!

Had a fun day out with Capt Chris. Although the wind and grass made the fly fishing challenging, he made every effort to navigate nature with alternative locations. The switchover to bait-cast resulted in several mangrove snappers, as well as trying for tarpon & snook. Would re-book in a blink with Capt. Chris at the helm!
