What are the most popular months to fish for cobia in Marathon?

In Marathon, Florida, the cobia fishing season is a highly anticipated time of year for anglers eager to reel in these prized gamefish. The cobia season typically kicks off in the early spring, around March, when these migratory fish begin to move into the warm waters of the Florida Keys. As the water temperature rises, cobia become more active and plentiful, making it prime time for anglers to target them both offshore and inshore.

During the peak of the cobia season in Marathon, which typically lasts from March through May, anglers have the opportunity to encounter these powerful fish in a variety of habitats. Offshore, cobia can often be found cruising around wrecks, reefs, and other structure, while inshore, they may be spotted near buoys, markers, and along the flats. This abundance of fishing grounds ensures that anglers of all skill levels have ample opportunities to hook into these hard-fighting fish.

As summer approaches and water temperatures continue to rise, the cobia fishing season in Marathon begins to taper off. While cobia can still be found throughout the summer months, they may become more scattered and less predictable, making them a bit more challenging to locate. However, for those willing to put in the effort, summer can still provide rewarding opportunities to target cobia in the waters surrounding Marathon, ensuring that the excitement of cobia fishing extends well beyond the traditional spring season.

What techniques are popular for catching cobia in Marathon?

Cobia fishing in Marathon, Florida, offers anglers a variety of techniques to target these prized gamefish in the rich waters of the Florida Keys. One popular method is trolling near reefs and wrecks, where cobia often congregate in search of prey. Anglers deploy a spread of lures or baits behind the boat while moving at a slow to moderate speed, enticing cobia to strike. This technique allows anglers to cover a large area and locate active fish, making it an effective approach for targeting cobia offshore.

Another productive technique for cobia fishing in Marathon is sight fishing, particularly in shallower waters. Anglers scan the surface for cobia cruising near buoys, markers, or along the flats. Once spotted, anglers can cast lures or live baits directly to the fish, presenting a tantalizing offering to entice a strike. Sight fishing for cobia requires keen observation and precise casting, adding an exciting element of challenge to the angling experience.

For those preferring a more stationary approach, anchoring near structure such as wrecks, reefs, or channel markers can be an effective technique for cobia fishing in Marathon. Anglers deploy live baits or large, flashy lures near the bottom, enticing cobia to investigate and strike. This method allows anglers to target specific areas known to hold cobia and capitalize on their feeding behavior. Patience and persistence are key when employing this technique, as cobia may take their time to investigate before committing to a strike. Overall, the diverse range of cobia fishing techniques available in Marathon ensures that anglers can tailor their approach to suit their preferences and maximize their chances of success on the water.

My wife and I did a mix of reef fishing and offshore fishing to make an 8 hour trip. The bite was spotty at times, but we found a few schools of mahi mahi and were able to catch several of them throughout the day! We only had one keeper size, but it was very exciting to get into them and watch them hit our baits. Captain Steve and first mate Mike worked nonstop to get us into more fish. They can’t control if the fish will bite, but they certainly gave it their best effort. They also had great hospitality and offered plenty of fun stories and advice. We took our fresh catch to Lazy Days that evening and had an incredible dinner.

Some times you are fortunate to meet people that leave a deep impression an impregnation on you. Captain Mark is one of these rare persons. I was fortunate to go fishing with him today and we had a blast. He is so kind, so full of knowledge, that I do recommend going fishing with him. His repeated actions around the wounded warrior project are a tribute to his care about his peers and good people in general.

Had a most excellent time. We were scheduled for an offshore trip but wind and waves caused us to cancel this trip. However, we rescheduled for later in the day for a tarpon fishing excursion. This was a blast ! We saw sharks up close and landed several yellow jacks which gave us a good fight before being returned to the water. After trying and trying (never give up) we snagged a good sized tarpon. After a good fight which included multiple boat maneuvers it was brought to the side of the boat before being cut loose to fight another day. We thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with the captain and first mate. Both were very attentive to us, making sure that our hooks were still baited and that we had all the help required for landing and documenting our catches before returning them to the water. A great time was had by all! The boat was immaculate and we had no issues if any sort.

We recently had the pleasure of embarking on a fishing charter with Captain Brad and his shipmate Miles, and I must say, it was an experience to remember! From start to finish, the trip was filled with excitement, laughter, and, of course, some great catches. First and foremost, Captain Brad's professionalism and expertise were evident from the moment we set foot on his well-equipped boat. The vessel itself was top-notch, complete with all the necessary fishing gear and even a bathroom—a luxury rarely found on fishing charters. This attention to detail immediately put us at ease and set the stage for an enjoyable day out on the water. Now, let's talk about Miles—what a gem! Not only was he incredibly friendly and personable, but his sense of humor added an extra layer of fun to the trip. Whether he was cracking jokes or teaching me the rules of fishing, Miles's presence truly enhanced the overall experience. It's clear that he's not just a shipmate but also a valuable member of Captain Brad's team. As for the fishing itself, we couldn't have asked for a better outing. Captain Brad navigated us to all the right spots, where we were able to reel in some impressive catches. His knowledge of the local waters and fishing techniques was evident, and it made for a successful day of angling. In summary, my fishing charter experience with Captain Brad and Miles was nothing short of exceptional. Whether you're a seasoned angler or a novice looking to try your hand at fishing, I highly recommend booking a trip with Captain Brad. You won't be disappointed! Happy fishing! Todd & Paige

Brad and Miles were great! They had our kids reeling in yellowtail not long after anchoring. We were also lucky to reel in a big grouper and a nice size kingfish. They recommended having the yellowtail cooked at Lazy Days which was fantastic. I would say if you were going out of Marathon to ask for Brad and Miles.
