Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

Speckled trout are highly sought after for their aggressive strikes, acrobatic leaps, and delicious flesh, making them a favorite target among local anglers and visitors alike.

Throughout the year, speckled trout can be found in the waters of Saint Bernard, but certain seasons offer particularly prime opportunities for successful fishing. Spring and fall are considered peak seasons for speckled trout fishing in the region, as these fish are more active and abundant during these times. As water temperatures rise in the spring, speckled trout move into shallower waters to spawn, providing anglers with excellent chances to target them in marshes, tidal flats, and along the coast.

Anglers in Saint Bernard utilize various techniques to target speckled trout, including casting lures, live bait fishing, and drift fishing. Popular lures for speckled trout include soft plastics, spoons, and topwater plugs, which mimic the movements of baitfish and shrimp. Live bait options such as shrimp, mullet, and croakers are also effective for enticing strikes from speckled trout, particularly when fished under popping corks or free-lined along grassy flats and marsh edges. With the right techniques and local knowledge, anglers can enjoy rewarding experiences while pursuing speckled trout in the diverse waters of Saint Bernard Parish.

What are the most popular months to fish for speckled trout fishing in Saint Bernard?

In Saint Bernard Parish, Louisiana, speckled trout seasons offer anglers varying opportunities throughout the year to pursue these prized game fish. While speckled trout can be found in the waters of Saint Bernard year-round, certain seasons present optimal conditions for successful fishing. Typically, spring and fall are considered peak seasons for speckled trout fishing in the region, as these fish are more active and abundant during these times.

During the spring months in Saint Bernard, speckled trout move into shallower waters to spawn, providing anglers with excellent opportunities to target them in marshes, tidal flats, and along the coast. As water temperatures rise and baitfish become more active, speckled trout feed voraciously, making them more susceptible to angling efforts. Anglers often employ techniques such as casting lures, live bait fishing, and drift fishing to target speckled trout during this season, enjoying exciting battles and memorable catches.

In the fall, speckled trout once again become more active as water temperatures begin to cool and baitfish migrations increase. Speckled trout move into shallower waters to feed in preparation for the cooler temperatures of winter, providing anglers with excellent opportunities to target them in marshes, bays, and along grassy flats. Fall is considered one of the best times to catch trophy-sized speckled trout in Saint Bernard, as these fish fatten up before the onset of winter. By understanding the seasonal movements and behaviors of speckled trout in Saint Bernard, anglers can maximize their chances of a successful catch throughout the year.

What techniques are popular for catching speckled trout in Saint Bernard?

In Saint Bernard Parish, Louisiana, anglers employ various techniques to target speckled trout in the region's diverse waterways. One effective method for catching speckled trout is casting lures, which mimic the movements of baitfish and shrimp, enticing strikes from these aggressive predators. Anglers often use soft plastics, spoons, and topwater plugs to imitate the prey that speckled trout feed on, such as mullet, shrimp, and pogies. By casting these lures near grassy flats, marsh edges, and tidal channels, anglers can provoke strikes from speckled trout prowling the shallows in search of food.

Live bait fishing is another popular technique for targeting speckled trout in Saint Bernard. Anglers use live shrimp, mullet, croakers, and pogies to entice strikes from speckled trout, particularly when fished under popping corks or free-lined along grassy flats and marsh edges. Live bait provides anglers with a natural presentation that can be highly effective in enticing strikes from wary speckled trout, especially during times when artificial lures may not produce as consistently.

Drift fishing is also a productive technique for targeting speckled trout in Saint Bernard's estuaries and bays. Anglers drift with the current while presenting lures or bait to speckled trout as they move along grass lines, oyster beds, and submerged structure. This technique allows anglers to cover a larger area of water and explore different depths, increasing their chances of encountering speckled trout. By adjusting their drift speed and presentation to match the conditions and the behavior of the fish, anglers can maximize their success when targeting speckled trout in the waters of Saint Bernard Parish.

What other species are popular in Saint Bernard?

In addition to targeting speckled trout, anglers in Saint Bernard Parish have a diverse range of other species to pursue in the area's rich waterways. One notable species is the redfish, also known as red drum, which is highly sought after for its strong fighting ability and delicious flavor. Redfish can often be found in similar habitats to speckled trout, including grassy flats, marsh edges, and around oyster beds. Anglers commonly use a variety of baits and lures to target redfish, including live shrimp, mullet, and crab, as well as soft plastics and spoons.

Another popular species among anglers in Saint Bernard is the flounder. These flatfish are known for their unique appearance and tasty fillets. Flounder are typically found along sandy bottoms, near structure such as rocks or pilings, and in areas with strong tidal currents. Anglers often target flounder using live bait such as mud minnows or mullet, as well as artificial lures like jigs and swimbaits. Patience and attention to detail are key when targeting flounder, as they are ambush predators that often lie in wait for passing prey.

Lastly, Saint Bernard Parish offers excellent opportunities for anglers to target sheepshead. These fish are known for their distinctive teeth and robust fighting ability. Sheepshead are commonly found around structures such as docks, pilings, and jetties, where they feed on crustaceans and shellfish. Anglers often use live bait such as shrimp or fiddler crabs, as well as small jigs or crab imitations, to entice strikes from sheepshead. Their cautious nature and sharp senses make sheepshead a challenging but rewarding species to target in the waters of Saint Bernard.

Had a great day with Seth despite the weather. I was only in town for 1 day and could not reschedule so we decided to go out and make the best of it. We caught a nice 22" redfish on first cast and after a few hours work we had another 22" and a fat 27" redfish in the boat. Seth stayed positive the whole day as we tried different spots and techniques. Will definitely fish with him again, hopefully in better weather.
