Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What is inshore fishing in Key West all about?

Inshore fishing in Key West, nestled at the southernmost tip of the Florida Keys, offers anglers a premier destination with a rich diversity of marine life and unique fishing opportunities. Known for its crystal-clear waters, expansive flats, and abundant mangrove islands, Key West provides a fertile habitat for a variety of sought-after fish species. Anglers can target species such as bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook, and redfish, each offering thrilling challenges and memorable experiences depending on the season and fishing techniques employed.

One of the most popular methods for inshore fishing in Key West is flats fishing, which involves poling or quietly drifting in shallow, clear waters to sight fish for species like bonefish and permit. Anglers typically use light tackle and specialized flies or live bait such as shrimp or crabs to entice these elusive and fast-moving fish. Flats fishing requires patience and precision in casting to present bait or lures accurately to cruising fish, offering anglers an exhilarating opportunity to test their skills against the backdrop of Key West's stunning natural beauty.

Mangrove fishing is also highly productive around Key West, particularly for targeting species like snook and redfish that seek refuge and feeding opportunities amidst the intricate roots and branches of mangrove trees. Anglers navigate shallow waters in kayaks or flats boats, using live bait such as pilchards or mullet, or artificial lures like soft plastics and topwater plugs, to draw strikes from these ambush predators. Mangrove fishing demands careful navigation and stealthy approaches to avoid spooking fish while maximizing chances of landing these powerful and prized catches in the tranquil and scenic waters surrounding Key West.

What are the most popular months to go inshore fishing in Key West?

Inshore fishing in Key West, Florida, provides anglers with an exciting array of fishing opportunities throughout the year, thanks to its warm climate and diverse marine habitats. Winter, from December through February, is a productive time for species like mangrove snapper, sheepshead, and speckled trout. These fish seek refuge in warmer, shallower waters around mangrove islands, bridges, and docks, making them accessible targets for anglers using live bait or artificial lures.

As spring arrives from March to May, Key West sees an increase in activity among iconic game fish such as tarpon, bonefish, and permit. The warming waters bring these species closer to shore and into the flats and channels surrounding the Keys. Anglers often sight fish for bonefish and permit in the shallow, clear waters, while tarpon begin their annual migration along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, offering thrilling opportunities for anglers to target these acrobatic fish.

Summer, spanning June through August, marks the peak of inshore fishing in Key West. The warm temperatures attract a wide range of species including snook, redfish, and juvenile tarpon. Anglers can find success fishing around mangrove islands, flats, and channels using a variety of techniques such as fly fishing, baitcasting, and live bait fishing. This season also offers excellent opportunities for night fishing, particularly for snook, which are known for their nocturnal feeding habits. Overall, Key West's inshore fishing seasons provide anglers with diverse opportunities and unforgettable experiences against the backdrop of its beautiful coastal scenery.

Tarpon fishing in Key West typically involves sight fishing in shallow flats and channels, especially during the spring and summer months when these silver kings migrate through the area. Anglers often use fly rods or heavy spinning gear with live bait such as mullet or crabs, as well as large artificial lures that mimic their prey. The thrill of hooking into a tarpon and experiencing its aerial displays makes it a bucket-list catch for many anglers visiting the Keys.

Bonefish are another prized species in Key West's inshore waters, prized for their speed and challenging nature. These silver bullets are often targeted in shallow flats and sandy bottoms, where anglers use light spinning gear or fly fishing equipment. Techniques involve stealthy approaches and accurate casting to present small crustacean or shrimp patterns to these wary fish. For those looking to combine sport with culinary delight, permit fishing in Key West offers a rewarding pursuit. Permit are known for their strong fights and are commonly found near flats, wrecks, and channels. Anglers use light to medium spinning gear or fly rods, presenting live crabs or shrimp as bait, or casting crab-like artificial lures. My families trip with Captain John was awesome. John is a humble, hardworking, easy going, chill, dude and fit right in with our families vibe. He was great with our 5 year old son and answered all of his many fishing questions. John made it clear that between the time of year and conditions that day we would have to really work at it to get anything. That’s exactly what we did and we ended up catching a good amount of fish. Most importantly our 5 year old son, who is obsessed with fishing, had the time of his life and caught fish he’s never seen before. 5 stars, highly recommend. If you have a small group this is the charter to go on!

Hunter and his crew were excellent, it was a first time going lobstering so they made everyone feel very safe and comfortable going over everything in detail and going with us to enure our comfort and saftey. Althugh we did run into some weather they worked very hard to get us on lobsters and work around the weather. The first time we drop in the water there my friend had a lobster right under him within a minute. As weather progressed they even gave us credit since we couldn't stay out the entire time even though it was already a great experience. We will be back again.

We highly recommend this father and son guided trip. Fishing with my husband and I were our 7 and 10 year old granddaughters, daughter and son in law. The boat was older but very clean. The cabin with a small fan and cooler filled with water and cold drinks was nice. We caught 7 mahi mahi and they made sure each one of us had the thrill of reeling in our fish. Back at the dock, our fish were cleaned and bagged to bring home. Our granddaughters were given the skins and shown how to hold them off the side of the boat to feed the huge tarpon while nurse sharks were circling. An exciting end to an awesome trip.

Hunter is a lobster expert and put me on numerous keeper lobsters while, from what I hear, most other guides struggled to in these very tough 2024 mini-season conditions (last 2 days). Good guy, and is patient and happy to teach newbie free-divers like me the ropes. I HIGHLY recommend for newbies or experts!! He obviously knows his stuff and he must be one of the best lobster fisherman in the Keys. The pic is from our 7/24/24 trip. I won’t hire anyone else again after the last few trips with Hunter!!
