Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. What is amberjack fishing in Key West all about?

Amberjack fishing in Key West offers anglers an exciting and rewarding experience, as these powerful and aggressive fish are known for their hard-hitting strikes and formidable fighting abilities. Found in deep offshore waters around wrecks, reefs, and other underwater structures, amberjack provide anglers with thrilling battles that test their strength and skill. Key West's proximity to the Gulf Stream and the Florida Straits makes it an ideal location for targeting these prized gamefish.

To target amberjack effectively in Key West, anglers often use heavy tackle and large baits to entice these voracious predators. Live bait such as blue runners, pilchards, or large pinfish are popular choices, as well as artificial jigs and plugs that mimic the movement of baitfish. Anglers typically employ vertical jigging or bottom fishing techniques, dropping their baits or lures near the structure where amberjack congregate. Patience and persistence are key when fishing for amberjack, as these fish can be finicky and require precise presentations to entice them into striking.

Amberjack fishing in Key West is best during the spring and summer months when these fish are most active and abundant in the area. During this time, warmer water temperatures and favorable currents draw amberjack closer to shore, making them more accessible to anglers. Additionally, Key West's numerous offshore reefs, wrecks, and ledges provide ample opportunities for anglers to target amberjack at varying depths and locations. Whether fishing from a private boat, charter vessel, or offshore structure, anglers in Key West can enjoy thrilling encounters with these powerful gamefish throughout the year.

While amberjack fishing in Key West is best during the spring and summer months, anglers can still encounter these fish during the fall and winter seasons. However, during the colder months, amberjack tend to move to deeper waters or migrate to warmer regions, making them less abundant and more challenging to locate. Nonetheless, with proper techniques and knowledge of their behavior patterns, anglers can still find success targeting amberjack in Key West throughout the year. Whether fishing for sport or seeking a delicious meal, amberjack provide anglers with thrilling encounters and rewarding catches in the waters surrounding Key West.

What techniques are popular for catching amberjack in Key West?

When fishing for amberjack in Key West, anglers employ various techniques to entice these powerful gamefish. One popular method is bottom fishing using live bait or artificial lures. Anglers often target offshore reefs, wrecks, and other submerged structures where amberjack are known to congregate. Using heavy tackle and sturdy rods, anglers drop their baits or lures to the bottom and wait for the telltale strike of an amberjack. Live bait options include blue runners, pinfish, and grunts, while artificial lures such as jigs, swimbaits, and butterfly jigs can also be effective in attracting these aggressive predators.

Another effective technique for catching amberjack in Key West is vertical jigging. This method involves dropping heavy jigs vertically through the water column, mimicking the movement of injured baitfish. Anglers jig the lure up and down, enticing strikes from hungry amberjack lurking below. Vertical jigging allows anglers to cover a wide range of depths and can be particularly effective when targeting suspended fish or fishing over deep wrecks and structures. This technique requires specialized jigging rods and reels designed to handle the heavy gear and powerful strikes of amberjack.

Trolling is also a popular technique for targeting amberjack in Key West, especially when fishing offshore waters. Anglers troll large diving plugs, spoons, or rigged baits behind a boat at varying speeds to cover a wide area and locate schools of fish. Trolling allows anglers to cover a lot of ground and explore different depths and structures where amberjack may be feeding. When a strike occurs, anglers quickly reel in the line to set the hook and then engage in a thrilling battle to land the powerful fish. Whether bottom fishing, vertical jigging, or trolling, mastering these techniques can greatly increase anglers' chances of success when targeting amberjack in the waters off Key West.

What other species are popular in Key West?

Aside from amberjack, Key West offers anglers a diverse range of species to target, making it a hotspot for recreational fishing enthusiasts. One popular species to catch in these waters is the mahi-mahi, also known as dolphin fish or dorado. Mahi-mahi are often found in offshore waters near floating debris, weed lines, and underwater structures. Anglers typically troll with brightly colored lures or live bait to entice these acrobatic fish, known for their vibrant colors and impressive fighting abilities.

Another sought-after species in Key West is the sailfish, prized for its speed, agility, and acrobatic leaps. These magnificent gamefish are often found in offshore waters, particularly along the edge of the Gulf Stream and near underwater structures where baitfish congregate. Anglers target sailfish using a variety of techniques, including trolling with rigged baits or lures, live bait fishing, and kite fishing. Sailfish are known for their high jumps and blistering runs, providing anglers with an exhilarating fishing experience.

Grouper species commonly found in these waters include black grouper, red grouper, and gag grouper, which inhabit rocky ledges, reefs, and wrecks. Our trip with Tony was amazing! Our family had such a good time catching all sorts of different species. After catching fish pretty consistently for about four hours, Tony was nice enough to clean our fish for us. We were able to take our filets to the restaurant next to where he picked us up where they cooked them for us. Overall it was a great day and we highly recommend Tony and his services!

We were able to score Mackerel, Yellowtail and we latched on 3 Mahi’s at the very very last second! Super lucky. Brad and his first mate made it happen! We were able to leave with 2 mackerels and 2 Mahi Mahi’s! Thank you! You won’t regret booking with them. Special experience.

My families trip with Captain John was awesome. John is a humble, hardworking, easy going, chill, dude and fit right in with our families vibe. He was great with our 5 year old son and answered all of his many fishing questions. John made it clear that between the time of year and conditions that day we would have to really work at it to get anything. That’s exactly what we did and we ended up catching a good amount of fish. Most importantly our 5 year old son, who is obsessed with fishing, had the time of his life and caught fish he’s never seen before. 5 stars, highly recommend. If you have a small group this is the charter to go on!

We highly recommend this father and son guided trip. Fishing with my husband and I were our 7 and 10 year old granddaughters, daughter and son in law. The boat was older but very clean. The cabin with a small fan and cooler filled with water and cold drinks was nice. We caught 7 mahi mahi and they made sure each one of us had the thrill of reeling in our fish. Back at the dock, our fish were cleaned and bagged to bring home. Our granddaughters were given the skins and shown how to hold them off the side of the boat to feed the huge tarpon while nurse sharks were circling. An exciting end to an awesome trip.

We had an absolutely amazing time deep sea fishing with Captain Anthony! He is a fun and knowledgeable fisherman with LOTS of experience and great stories (ask him about how he’d dive for lobsters to impress his dates). He does all the work but lets you learn and participate as much or as little as you want. We knew we had an expert when we heard the radio chatter of all the other guides complaining that nothing was biting, while we pulled in six (only four mahi in pic). The other two were a small tuna and a ~32” barracuda). We highly recommend Kilo Whiskey Charter & Captain Anthony!
