Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. What is hogfish in Marathon all about?

In Marathon, Florida, hogfish are a prized catch among anglers, known for their unique appearance, delicious flavor, and challenging fishing tactics. These colorful and elusive fish inhabit the rocky ledges, reefs, and sandy bottoms of the Florida Keys, offering anglers the chance to target them in both shallow and deeper waters. With their distinctive hog-like snouts and ability to quickly retreat into crevices and holes, hogfish present a thrilling challenge for anglers seeking a rewarding catch in Marathon's coastal waters.

Targeting hogfish in Marathon often requires a blend of patience, finesse, and strategic angling techniques. One popular method is spearfishing, where divers equipped with snorkels, fins, and spearguns venture into the clear waters to stalk and capture hogfish in their natural habitat. With careful observation and precise aim, spearfishermen can target hogfish hiding among the coral reefs and rocky outcrops, making for an exhilarating underwater hunting experience.

For those preferring traditional rod and reel methods, hogfish can also be targeted using bottom fishing techniques. Anglers often use light tackle and small hooks baited with crustaceans such as shrimp or crabs to entice strikes from hogfish near the reef structures and rocky ledges. However, hogfish are known for their cautious feeding behavior, requiring anglers to employ stealthy approaches and delicate presentations to successfully hook and land these prized fish. Whether spearfishing or bottom fishing, targeting hogfish in Marathon offers anglers a thrilling and rewarding pursuit amidst the stunning coastal scenery of the Florida Keys.

The hogfish seasons in Marathon are carefully regulated to ensure the sustainability of the fishery and the preservation of hogfish populations for future generations. Specific dates, bag limits, and size restrictions are often implemented to prevent overfishing and promote responsible angling practices. Anglers must adhere to these regulations to help maintain the health of hogfish populations and ensure the longevity of the fishery in Marathon's coastal waters.

We had an amazing time! We had a special interest in Mahi and captain brad and his first mate made it happen. It was great, they made us feel super comfortable and confident. We were able to score Mackerel, Yellowtail and we latched on 3 Mahi’s at the very very last second! Super lucky. Brad and his first mate made it happen! We were able to leave with 2 mackerels and 2 Mahi Mahi’s! Thank you! You won’t regret booking with them. Special experience.

Captain Brad and his first mate were amazing. It was my first time fishing off of a boat and I'm glad it was with them! They were both very patient, helpful, and made it an unforgettable experience. We caught snapper and grouper and even hooked an eel! Thanks to both of you for a fantastic time on the water. My wife and I did a mix of reef fishing and offshore fishing to make an 8 hour trip. The bite was spotty at times, but we found a few schools of mahi mahi and were able to catch several of them throughout the day! We only had one keeper size, but it was very exciting to get into them and watch them hit our baits. Captain Steve and first mate Mike worked nonstop to get us into more fish. They can’t control if the fish will bite, but they certainly gave it their best effort. They also had great hospitality and offered plenty of fun stories and advice. We took our fresh catch to Lazy Days that evening and had an incredible dinner.

Had an absolute blast with Captain Chris! He was so nice and his passion and love for fishing made my bachelorette trip worthwhile! Our crew got to catch some great mackerel, yellowtail snapper and mutton snapper, plus more! Being able to celebrate my love for fishing and send off in the Keys with my gfs and Chris was the best! He got me on a huge tarpon hook up that I’ll absolutely never forget. Highly highly recommend this trip and we’ll certainly be back!!!

Had a most excellent time. We were scheduled for an offshore trip but wind and waves caused us to cancel this trip. However, we rescheduled for later in the day for a tarpon fishing excursion. This was a blast ! We saw sharks up close and landed several yellow jacks which gave us a good fight before being returned to the water. After trying and trying (never give up) we snagged a good sized tarpon. After a good fight which included multiple boat maneuvers it was brought to the side of the boat before being cut loose to fight another day. We thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with the captain and first mate. Both were very attentive to us, making sure that our hooks were still baited and that we had all the help required for landing and documenting our catches before returning them to the water. A great time was had by all! The boat was immaculate and we had no issues if any sort.

We had a great full day trip with Captain Chris. Chris really helped my wife with his patience and encouragement fight big fish in deep water and use lighter tackle at the shallower wreck. She landed nice yellowtail, yellow jack, mackerel and amberjack. Chris worked hard all day keeping us in fish and rigged as the shark tax was high though the morning. At the end of the day we got great local restaurant recommendations and tips on cooking our catch. Loved the boat playlist! Highly recommend and hope to come back to fish with Chris again.

Captain Chris was amazing! He taught everyone how to properly fish and catch fish. We caught plenty of fish even though he said it was a light day. We were pretty excited to get a wide variety of fish including a couple different groupers and some nurse sharks. Hopefully his new term for the nurse shark will follow him on many voyages to come! We all had a great time would totally recommend and would love to come back!
