trip description for Kayak Fishing With Captain Troy in St. Augustine

On this epic kayak-fishing trip, you'll be able to get up close and personal with a bunch of inshore sportfish, alongside your guide, Troy! Kayak fishing is an extremely fun way to hook a new personal best; kayaks are totally silent, barely disturb the water, and allow you to access the skinniest water down here in St. Augustine! In many places, boats cant even reach the areas you'll be fishing during low tide, so your target fish experience very little fishing pressure. Most of the time, you'll be sight casting directly to the fish to them, which is absolutely thrilling! Troy specializes in fly fishing, but he's happy to set you up with spinning gear as well. No matter the technique, Troy knows how to "think like a fish" and will show you how to hook into some big ones. Meet-up locations depend on the time of year, tides, weather, and where you're staying. Book a trip now and see all that St. Augustine has to offer! Read More

What is redfish fishing in St. Augustine all about?

In the picturesque coastal waters of St. Augustine, redfish reign supreme as one of the most sought-after game fish. Known for their powerful runs and tenacious fighting spirit, redfish offer anglers an exhilarating challenge against the backdrop of St. Augustine's rich marine environment. These iconic fish can be found prowling the shallow bays, estuaries, and tidal creeks of St. Augustine, where they hunt for prey amidst the abundant marshes, oyster beds, and mangrove shorelines. Redfish are prized not only for their sporting qualities but also for their delicious flesh, making them a favorite catch among anglers of all skill levels.

The redfish season in St. Augustine offers anglers ample opportunities to target these prized game fish throughout the year. While redfish can be caught year-round in St. Augustine's coastal waters, the peak seasons typically occur during the spring and fall months. As temperatures rise in the spring, redfish become more active and move into shallower waters to feed and spawn, providing anglers with prime opportunities to hook into these hard-fighting game fish. Similarly, in the fall, as temperatures cool and baitfish become more abundant, redfish migrate back into the estuaries and rivers, offering anglers exciting opportunities to target them amidst the stunning scenery of St. Augustine.

Anglers targeting redfish in St. Augustine employ a variety of techniques to entice strikes from these elusive fish. Sight fishing is a popular method, particularly in the crystal-clear waters of St. Augustine's flats and backwater creeks, where anglers can spot cruising redfish and cast to them with precision. Casting with artificial lures, such as spoons, soft plastics, or topwater plugs, is also highly effective for targeting redfish around structure such as docks, bridges, and oyster bars. Additionally, live bait fishing with shrimp, mullet, or crabs is a favored technique, particularly when targeting larger specimens lurking around deeper holes or channel edges. Whether casting with lures, live bait, or flies, anglers in St. Augustine can enjoy thrilling encounters with redfish against the backdrop of the city's scenic coastal waters.

What are the most popular months to fish for redfish in St. Augustine?

In St. Augustine, the redfish season unfolds with the changing rhythms of the coastal environment, offering anglers distinct opportunities throughout the year. The prime seasons for redfish typically coincide with the transitional periods of spring and fall. During the spring months, as temperatures begin to rise and the days lengthen, redfish become more active and move into shallower waters to feed and spawn. This period marks a peak in redfish activity, presenting anglers with optimal conditions to target these prized game fish amidst the scenic backdrop of St. Augustine's coastal landscape.

Similarly, the fall season in St. Augustine heralds another peak in redfish activity as temperatures gradually cool and baitfish become more abundant. Redfish migrate back into the estuaries, rivers, and tidal creeks in search of prey, offering anglers exciting opportunities to target them in shallow waters. The fall redfish run is characterized by increased feeding behavior and aggressive strikes, providing anglers with thrilling encounters against the backdrop of St. Augustine's scenic marshes and mangrove shorelines.

While redfish can be caught year-round in St. Augustine's coastal waters, the spring and fall seasons stand out as prime times to target these hard-fighting game fish. However, redfish can also be found throughout the summer and winter months, albeit with varying levels of activity and abundance. Anglers willing to adapt their techniques and explore different areas of St. Augustine's diverse ecosystem can enjoy rewarding fishing experiences year-round, whether casting with lures, live bait, or flies against the backdrop of the city's scenic coastal waters.

What techniques are popular for catching redfish in St. Augustine?

In St. Augustine, mastering effective redfish fishing techniques is key to success in targeting these iconic game fish. One popular method among anglers is sight fishing, particularly in the clear waters of St. Augustine's flats and backwater creeks. Equipped with polarized sunglasses, anglers scan the shallows for cruising or tailing redfish and cast to them with precision. Using lightweight tackle and subtle presentations, such as soft plastic lures or flies, allows anglers to entice strikes from wary redfish in shallow water.

Casting with artificial lures is another productive technique for targeting redfish in St. Augustine. Anglers often use a variety of lures such as spoons, soft plastics, or topwater plugs to mimic the movements of baitfish or crustaceans that redfish prey upon. Casting around structure such as docks, bridges, and oyster bars can yield exciting strikes from hungry redfish. Varying the retrieval speed and technique can help anglers find what triggers the most aggressive responses from these hard-fighting game fish.

Live bait fishing is also highly effective for targeting redfish in St. Augustine, particularly when presented near structure or along current seams where redfish often congregate. Anglers commonly use live shrimp, mullet, or crabs rigged on a variety of rigs such as Carolina rigs or jigheads. Patience and finesse are key when live bait fishing for redfish, as anglers must be ready to detect subtle strikes and set the hook quickly to capitalize on the opportunity. Whether sight fishing, casting with lures, or presenting live bait, anglers in St. Augustine can enjoy thrilling encounters with redfish against the backdrop of the city's scenic coastal waters.

What other species are popular in St. Augustine?

In St. Augustine's diverse coastal waters, anglers have a wealth of species to target aside from redfish, offering a rich tapestry of fishing opportunities year-round. One popular option is speckled trout, a prized game fish known for its aggressive strikes and delicious flesh. Speckled trout inhabit the same shallow bays, estuaries, and grassy flats as redfish, making them an accessible target for anglers exploring St. Augustine's scenic coastline. Techniques such as drift fishing, casting with artificial lures, or live bait fishing with shrimp or mullet can be highly effective for targeting speckled trout in the area's diverse ecosystem.

Another sought-after species in St. Augustine is flounder, prized for its delicate flavor and challenging angling experience. Flounder inhabit the sandy bottoms, oyster beds, and grassy flats of St. Augustine's estuaries and can be targeted using techniques such as drift fishing, bottom fishing with live bait or artificial lures, or casting along marsh edges and channel edges. Flounder fishing is particularly productive during the spring and fall months, coinciding with the species' spawning migrations and increased activity levels, offering anglers exciting opportunities to hook into these elusive flatfish.

St. Augustine's coastal waters also offer excellent opportunities to target a variety of other species, including black drum, sheepshead, and mangrove snapper. Black drum and sheepshead are commonly targeted using bottom fishing techniques with cut bait or crab around structure such as jetties, pilings, and oyster reefs. Mangrove snapper, prized for their delicious flavor and challenging fights, inhabit the same areas as other reef-dwelling species and can be targeted using live bait or artificial lures. Whether targeting redfish or exploring the diverse range of species in St. Augustine, anglers can enjoy rewarding fishing experiences against the backdrop of the city's scenic coastal landscape.

We enjoyed our fishing trip with Mike. His boat is comfortable, safe and can go in the skinny water. Fishing was off for everyone this afternoon, but Mike worked diligently to produce. We caught a few nice fish and had a wonderful ride on a beautiful day.

With a huge storm the day before and winds still keeping most boats off the water we did very well. 12 fish total with 2 being sharks. One fish we caught was bit in half! Great day on the beach! Learned so many new skills as well and Kathy is too notch at sharing her techniques and working diligently to keep all three of us busey with four rods. You won't find that from a boat. Honestly with four poles soaking, most double rigs totaling 7-8 baits in the water at all times seems much more productive than one rod per angler getting snagged on a reef or baits getting stripped. Being an avid angler myself I'm very impressed with my first time surf fishing under post cold front conditions when many fish get finiky and tuff to commit to feed. Thank you Kathy!!! I'll be back!

Captain Don is truly a 5 star fishing guide. He's a better guy. I've been fishing for over 50 years, and as I hoped, Captain Don showed me several ticks and trips I'd never seen. No matter your experience level, he has something to help. We had a great day on the water, and had a great conversation. Darn fish just kept bugging us though.

Our 6-hour in-shore fishing trip with Captain Billy was such a great time! He's definitely done his fair share of charters and we were lucky enough to catch quite a few fish. He followed all sizing restrictions and made sure we were on fish at every spot we went to. After, he showed us the proper way to clean fish. We will most definitely do another charter with him in the future.
