Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Working with experienced fishing guides who know the best local spots and techniques can dramatically increase your odds of a great day. Having someone who is on the water every day and knows the area like the back of their hand is going to give you the best chances of success.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What is kingfish fishing in St. Augustine all about?

Kingfish, also known as king mackerel, are a prized game fish sought after by anglers in St. Augustine for their speed, strength, and delicious flesh. These pelagic predators inhabit the offshore waters of the Atlantic Ocean, making St. Augustine a prime destination for anglers looking to target these powerful fish. Kingfish are known for their aggressive strikes and acrobatic leaps once hooked, providing anglers with thrilling battles against the scenic backdrop of the city's coastal waters.

In St. Augustine, kingfish are commonly targeted using trolling techniques. Anglers troll a spread of baits or lures behind the boat at varying speeds, covering a wide area of water to locate schools of kingfish. Popular baits for trolling include rigged ballyhoo, spoons, plugs, or skirted baits. Anglers may also deploy planers or downriggers to target kingfish at different depths in the water column. Once hooked, kingfish put up a spirited fight, often making blistering runs and powerful dives in an attempt to shake the hook.

While kingfish can be caught year-round in St. Augustine, the peak season for targeting these fish typically occurs during the warmer months, from late spring through early fall. During this time, kingfish migrate closer to the coast in search of food, providing anglers with prime opportunities for offshore fishing adventures. Whether trolling offshore or exploring other productive fishing grounds, anglers in St. Augustine can enjoy exhilarating encounters with kingfish against the backdrop of the city's scenic coastal landscape.

What are the most popular months to fish for kingfish in St. Augustine?

In St. Augustine, the kingfish season unfolds with the shifting rhythms of the coastal environment, offering anglers distinct opportunities throughout the year. The prime season for targeting kingfish typically aligns with the warmer months, spanning from late spring through early fall. As temperatures rise and coastal waters warm up, kingfish migrate closer to the coast of St. Augustine in search of baitfish, creating optimal conditions for anglers to pursue these powerful pelagic predators.

Late spring marks the onset of the kingfish season in St. Augustine, as these fish begin to move into the area's offshore waters in greater numbers. As temperatures continue to warm throughout the summer months, kingfish become more abundant and widely distributed along the coast, providing anglers with ample opportunities for offshore fishing adventures. During this time, anglers can target kingfish using a variety of techniques, including trolling, live bait fishing, or casting with artificial lures.

As fall approaches and temperatures begin to cool, the kingfish season in St. Augustine starts to taper off. While kingfish may still be present in the area's offshore waters, their numbers and activity levels typically decrease as they begin their migration southward in search of warmer waters. However, anglers may still encounter kingfish sporadically during this time, particularly during periods of stable weather and favorable ocean conditions. Overall, the kingfish season in St. Augustine provides anglers with exciting opportunities for offshore fishing adventures against the backdrop of the city's scenic coastal landscape.

What techniques are popular for catching kingfish in St. Augustine?

In St. Augustine, anglers utilize various effective techniques to target kingfish, catering to the fish's behavior and the dynamic conditions of the offshore waters. Trolling is perhaps the most common and productive method used by anglers to target kingfish. Anglers troll a spread of baits or lures behind the boat at varying speeds, typically ranging from 6 to 10 knots, covering a wide area of water to locate schools of kingfish. Popular baits for trolling include rigged ballyhoo, spoons, plugs, or skirted baits, with brightly colored and flashy designs often attracting the attention of these fast-moving pelagic fish.

Another effective technique for targeting kingfish in St. Augustine is live bait fishing. Anglers commonly use live baits such as pilchards, cigar minnows, or blue runners rigged on stinger rigs or wire leaders and drifted or slow-trolled behind the boat. Live bait presentations can be particularly enticing to kingfish, especially when presented around structure such as artificial reefs, wrecks, or ledges where these fish congregate to feed. Anglers must be prepared to react quickly to strikes from kingfish, as these fish are known for their powerful runs and tendency to swim erratically once hooked.

Casting with artificial lures is also a popular method for targeting kingfish in St. Augustine, particularly when fishing around structure such as artificial reefs, wrecks, or ledges. Anglers often use lures such as spoons, plugs, or jigs to mimic the movement of baitfish or squid that kingfish prey upon. Casting and retrieving with fast, erratic movements can help trigger aggressive strikes from kingfish, particularly when fishing in areas with strong currents or turbulent water conditions. Whether trolling, live bait fishing, or casting with lures, anglers in St. Augustine can enjoy exhilarating encounters with kingfish against the backdrop of the city's scenic offshore waters.

What other species are popular in St. Augustine?

While targeting kingfish offers thrilling angling experiences in St. Augustine's offshore waters, anglers have the opportunity to diversify their catches by pursuing a variety of other species. Red snapper, prized for their firm texture and sweet flavor, are abundant in the area's offshore reefs and wrecks. These bottom-dwelling fish can be targeted using techniques such as bottom fishing with live bait or jigging with artificial lures. Red snapper season in federal waters typically opens for a limited time each year, providing anglers with opportunities to reel in these prized game fish.

Another popular target species in St. Augustine is grouper, which inhabit the offshore reefs, ledges, and rock piles. These powerful bottom-dwelling predators offer anglers exciting battles and rewarding catches. Techniques such as bottom fishing with live bait, jigging with vertical jigs, or trolling with deep diving plugs can be effective for targeting grouper in St. Augustine's offshore waters. Anglers must exercise caution when targeting grouper, as these fish are known for their strong runs and ability to retreat into structure to break off the line.

St. Augustine's offshore waters also offer opportunities to target species such as mahi mahi, sailfish, and wahoo. Mahi mahi, known for their vibrant colors and acrobatic leaps, can be found around floating debris, weed lines, and offshore structures. Trolling with skirted baits, plugs, or rigged ballyhoo is a popular technique for targeting mahi mahi. Sailfish, prized for their speed and agility, are often targeted using trolling techniques with rigged baits or lures. Wahoo, known for their speed and powerful runs, can be targeted using high-speed trolling techniques with lures such as diving plugs or skirted baits. Whether targeting kingfish or exploring other productive fishing grounds, anglers in St. Augustine can enjoy exciting encounters with a variety of species against the backdrop of the city's scenic offshore waters.

I set up a fishing trip with Captain Mike as part of my buddies bachelor party and could not have asked for a better experience. Capt. Mike was extremely professional and was an excellent guide. He personally reached out to me a few days before our scheduled departure to check in and see if I had any questions and give me more details. The morning of the trip Captain Mike had everything set up and waiting for us when we arrived to the dock. I was very impressed with how organized he was. The Captain wasted no time getting us on fish and the entire group started reeling them in one after the other. At the conclusion of the trip Captain Mike cleaned all of the fish we caught and bagged up the filets for us to take home. I would highly recommend Captain Mike to everyone. My buddies and I had a great time!

    Trip: 4-Hour Quick Fishing Trip

  • ★★★★★
Best fishing day ever! We told Captain Troy we were serious about getting "keeper" fish to eat, and he did not disappoint. A full 12-hour trip into the Atlantic got us 46 delicious keepers (variety of snapper species, Jacks, Cobia, trigger fish, and more) with plenty of non-stop action, thanks to Troy's laser-focus on the fish. He provided good coaching on the best methods to drop our lines and haul up the bounty. He kept the boat on top of fish continuously, and had us haul up our lines as the boat drifted off so he could reposition the boat back over the fish. We literally spent no time at all just hanging out waiting for bites in an empty ocean. He knows some good spots; for the most part we were the only boat on the water as far as the eye could see; we only noticed a couple of other boats wander over toward us in one location. Action also included fighting with one or two giant groupers (line snapped off before we could get them to the boat) and a couple of small sharks. It got exciting when we had to quickly haul in a snapper to save it from the jaws of an impressive 6-foot hammerhead. Overall an exciting, successful, exhausting day on the water from sunup to sundown. Enjoyed grilled Cobia and Jack kabobs for dinner that evening.
