What is blackfin tuna fishing in St. Augustine all about?

In the waters off St. Augustine, Florida, anglers have the opportunity to target blackfin tuna, prized for their speed, strength, and delectable flesh. These sleek and powerful fish are known for their distinctive dark blue to black coloration on their backs and yellow finlets, making them easily recognizable in the ocean. Blackfin tuna inhabit offshore waters, where they can be found in schools around underwater structures such as reefs, wrecks, and offshore ledges. Their preference for warm, tropical waters makes St. Augustine an ideal location for anglers looking to hook into these exciting gamefish.

Blackfin tuna fishing in St. Augustine requires anglers to employ a variety of techniques to successfully hook these elusive predators. Trolling with small lures or rigged baits is a popular method for targeting blackfin tuna, particularly around areas where these fish congregate, such as temperature breaks, weed lines, and current edges. Anglers often use planers or downriggers to present their baits at varying depths, increasing their chances of enticing a strike from passing tuna.

Another effective technique for blackfin tuna fishing in St. Augustine is chunking, where anglers use chunks of baitfish to create a slick in the water to attract hungry tuna. By anchoring near productive areas and deploying a steady stream of bait chunks into the water, fishermen can lure blackfin tuna to the surface where they can be targeted with live bait or artificial lures. This method requires patience and persistence, but the rewards can be well worth it for anglers looking to hook into these powerful and delicious gamefish in the offshore waters of St. Augustine.

As the seasons transition into fall and winter, blackfin tuna may become less abundant in the offshore waters of St. Augustine as water temperatures cool. Wow!! IF YOU WANT TO GO SEA FISHING YOU HAVE TO GO WITH CAPTAIN NICK!!! So we turned up to a pretty chilly and windy meeting spot, thinking why hasn’t this been postponed to another day, surely we can’t got out in this weather. How wrong we were. Captain Nick arrived early assured us we would be fine and we would be fishing the river and not going out to the ocean, but he was pretty sure we would still catch some fish. When we started fishing within the 1st half hour we had caught 2 huge fish , the rest of the afternoon was spent tracking fish and catching them. Captain Nick and his mate answered all questions that were asked of them, their knowledge of the area and their love of fishing was clearly evident. They made this fishing trip, one that a 12 year old kid from England will remember forever. Thankyou Captain Nick for the experience

Best fishing day ever! We told Captain Troy we were serious about getting "keeper" fish to eat, and he did not disappoint. A full 12-hour trip into the Atlantic got us 46 delicious keepers (variety of snapper species, Jacks, Cobia, trigger fish, and more) with plenty of non-stop action, thanks to Troy's laser-focus on the fish. He provided good coaching on the best methods to drop our lines and haul up the bounty. He kept the boat on top of fish continuously, and had us haul up our lines as the boat drifted off so he could reposition the boat back over the fish. We literally spent no time at all just hanging out waiting for bites in an empty ocean. He knows some good spots; for the most part we were the only boat on the water as far as the eye could see; we only noticed a couple of other boats wander over toward us in one location. Action also included fighting with one or two giant groupers (line snapped off before we could get them to the boat) and a couple of small sharks. It got exciting when we had to quickly haul in a snapper to save it from the jaws of an impressive 6-foot hammerhead. Overall an exciting, successful, exhausting day on the water from sunup to sundown. Enjoyed grilled Cobia and Jack kabobs for dinner that evening.

We had an unbelievable time with Captain James and I can't wait to fish with him again. Was in the area for a wedding and was looking to head offshore so we booked with James. He kept in touch leading up to our trip and let us know the kings were running. We headed out through the St. Mary's jetties and set up on the troll after catching some baitfish on the buoys. There were a couple other boats out and no one seemed to get a bite, the kings just weren't biting. From there, Capt. James took us to one of his snapper spots and we reeled em in on every drop. Everyone caught fish and James was super patient helping one buddy who was offshore for the first time. James was a blast to fish with and was super knowledgeable about the area and its history. His center console split the chop like butter. Will be back! - Jonathan with Captain Experiences
