trip description for Offshore Fishing in Jacksonville

Fishing the offshore waters of North East Florida can be world class. Lots of options depending on the time of year and water temps. We usually break it down into two categories trolling and bottom fishing. Trolling we prefer using live bait and 30 lb. conventional tackle. Targeting king mackerel, cobia, bonita, barracuda, sailfish, mahi and sometimes even blackfin tuna. This all depends on conditions and the time of year we fish. Usually we start the day by throwing a cast net for live bait or stopping on a piece of structure to jig up some minnows using a sabibki rig. Once the baitwells are loaded its off to the fishing grounds. All depending on where the bite has been best is where we start to fish. Sometimes it can be a few miles out and other days we need to run 10-12 miles offshore. Bottom fishing can be wide open off of our coast as well targeting red snapper, vermillion snapper, black seabass, amberjack, grey grouper, cobia and triggerfish just to name a handful. The live bait can work very well on the bottom as well fresh cut bait and frozen bait. Until you have felt the fight of a mule snapper or a big amberjack it's hard to express in words how hard they pull. We use heavy conventional tackle (80lb.) as well as big spinning rods for the fishing these waters. Read More

Additionally, artificial lures mimicking the movement of smaller baitfish can be successful when jigging or trolling. As red snapper regulations are in place to ensure sustainable fishing practices, anglers must adhere to size limits and seasonal closures to contribute to the conservation of this prized species in St. Augustine's offshore waters.

What techniques are popular for catching red snapper in St. Augustine?

In St. Augustine, anglers employ various effective techniques to target red snapper, a prized species found in the offshore waters near reefs, wrecks, and underwater structures. Bottom fishing is a commonly used technique, where anglers anchor or drift over known red snapper habitats and present baits such as live or cut baitfish, squid, or shrimp near the seafloor. Rigging with a Carolina or fish finder rig allows the bait to remain close to the bottom, where red snapper are known to feed, increasing the chances of enticing strikes.

Jigging is another productive technique for targeting red snapper in St. Augustine. Anglers use heavy metal jigs, often tipped with squid or cut bait, and drop them to the bottom near structure-rich areas where red snapper are likely to congregate. Vertical jigging allows anglers to cover a wide area of water column and mimic the movements of injured or fleeing baitfish, attracting the attention of red snapper. This technique requires precise control of the jig's depth and retrieval speed to entice strikes from these bottom-dwelling predators.

Trolling with deep-diving lures or baits can also be effective for targeting red snapper in St. Augustine's offshore waters. Anglers troll along reefs, ledges, or underwater structures at varying depths to locate active fish. Deep-diving plugs, diving spoons, or skirted trolling baits can mimic the movements of baitfish and attract the attention of red snapper. Anglers must adjust trolling speed and depth based on water conditions and the behavior of the fish to maximize their chances of success. Whether bottom fishing, jigging, or trolling, anglers in St. Augustine can enjoy thrilling encounters with red snapper against the backdrop of the city's scenic offshore waters.
