Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Working with experienced fishing guides who know the best local spots and techniques can dramatically increase your odds of a great day. Having someone who is on the water every day and knows the area like the back of their hand is going to give you the best chances of success.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

Even if you’ve got a great setup already in your home waters, booking a guide also provides a great opportunity to experience new techniques, new locations, or even a chance at a new target species to knock off the bucket list.

We had a great experience with CPT. Kyle, he kept us on the fish. Ben, his deck hand was amazing and helped out tremendously. Definitely recommend this crew and boat. My family and I had a blast.

Kyle and Ben were great. We booked a full day and started at 5:30 catching out bait fish on the way out. My daughter and I quickly started getting motion sickness. My son and husband held on for a bit and were able to get a few catches in before they also felt the sea sickness. We headed back early. Ben and Kyle handled everything great and tried to still make it the best trip possible for us. Thanks guys! And sorry we weren’t more fun!

Captain Jerry and his main man Levi were amazing. Took my family and I out for our first fishing trip. Had a blast!! They were very helpful, encouraging, funny and great to get along with. Our trip was catered and it felt like it was our personal boat with the way were treated. We WILL be going on another trip with them in the future.

Trip: Federal Waters Deep Sea Fishing

Hi, Overall, we had a great trip. Captain Kyle and the mate were outstanding—professional, friendly, worked hard all day, and put us on fish. The weather cooperated, and we caught exactly what we were hoping for with some beautiful snapper and grouper. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the crew. The only disappointment was the fishing equipment. The rods and reels are showing their age and, in my opinion, are due for an upgrade. We were deep-drop fishing, and the reel handles were simply too small to provide the leverage needed to crank large fish up from deep water. For someone like me with arthritis in my hands, it made fighting fish much harder than it needed to be. Larger power handles would make a tremendous difference. The rod grips could also use attention. Several of the foam grips would rotate on the rod, and the smooth round foam became slippery when wet. Rods with more ergonomic grips or grips with flats or contours would provide much better control and comfort. None of these issues took away from the excellent job the captain and mate did, but upgrading the tackle would significantly improve what is otherwise an outstanding charter experience. I hope you'll consider investing in newer rods and reels because your crew deserves equipment that matches the quality of the experience they provide. Thanks again for a great day on the water. – Merle Gilley
