Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?
Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.
Working with experienced fishing guides who know the best local spots and techniques can dramatically increase your odds of a great day. Having someone who is on the water every day and knows the area like the back of their hand is going to give you the best chances of success.
Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.
Even if you’ve got a great setup already in your home waters, booking a guide also provides a great opportunity to experience new techniques, new locations, or even a chance at a new target species to knock off the bucket list.

Folly Beach Fishing Overview
Folly Beach fishing charters offer a variety of tailored trips to maximize the surrounding waters. Inshore charters provide year-round access to Red and Black Drum, Spotted Seatrout, and Flounder, with Tarpon arriving in the summer. Live bait is popular, but lures and flies can also be used. These trips typically last 4-6 hours and are suitable for families and young children. Nearshore charters allow for bottom fishing around local reefs for Red Snapper, Black Seabass, and more, with the best bite in winter. Trolling for King Mackerel is the main activity in the summer, and these trips last 6-8 hours, ideal for beginners and those looking to stock their freezers. Deep sea charters offer the chance to catch Wahoo, Tuna, Sailfish, and Marlin, with these all-out adventures lasting up to 12 hours and best in the summer. Most charters depart from the public dock near Folly River Bridge, with some launching from Sunset Cay Marina. Saltwater fishing licenses are covered on all charters, while freshwater fishing requires a license for anyone aged 16 or older, with Striped Bass closed for harvest from June 1 to September 30.
Folly Beach Inshore Fishing
There is no off season when fishing in South Carolina's Lowcountry. With so many inshore species, mild temperatures, and a variety of water types, something is always biting. Bottom fishing for flounder is productive in the spring, summer, and fall. Speckled Trout can be caught year round but the peak bite is in the colder months between fall and spring. Speckled Trout, or "Specks" can be found along grass lines and oyster beds waiting to ambush their prey. Sheepshead can be found in the flats during high tide, or rocky bottomed areas near piers, jetties, and bridges. They are known as bait stealers so make sure you have your bait hooked well.
One of the most sought after inshore fish in Folly beach is the Redfish. Cruise the winding creeks and rivers on a skiff to stalk schooling reds. Fishing for redfish is some of the most peaceful fishing out there until you get a bite. There’s an abundance of redfish in the waters surrounding Folly Beach and once you find them the bites will just keep coming. Many guides use shrimp or baitfish beneath a cork to target hungry bull reds but a soft plastic or baitfish imitation is also effective.
Throughout the year black drum can be found with their close relative the redfish. In the heat of summer, migrating Tarpon make their way into the bays and sounds in pursuit of schooling menhaden and other baitfish. While South Carolina isn't commonly known for tarpon fishing, there are trophies are out there. With a little patience and a bit of luck, 100+ pound Tarpon can be caught in the waters around Folly Beach.
Folly Beach Nearshore Fishing
The water off the coast from Folly Beach contains some of the most productive fishing in South Carolina. Nearshore fishing is generally done in waters around 100 feet deep near artificial reefs. The reefs and other seafloor structures provide an ideal environment for dozens of gamefish to thrive. Hard fighting species like cobia, goliath grouper, king mackerel, amberjack, snapper, barracuda, and other smaller reef species can be found hunting baitfish around the nearshore structure throughout the year. Depending on target species and season, you can expect to use live or artificial bait to troll, cast, or bottom fish. These trips are ideal for taking the family out for a fun day on the water, but make no mistake, there are monster fish lurking in the shallows. Nearshore trips are perfect for anglers who want to switch it up and catch a variety of fish or target specific species. There is no telling what you'll hook up to!
