trip description for Bay Fishing in South Padre Island

A bay fishing trip in the Lower Laguna Madre, launching from either Port Mansfield or South Padre Island, promises an exhilarating and rewarding experience for any angler. Aboard a sleek 24' Shallow Sport Classic powered by a robust 250 Yamaha outboard engine, the adventure begins as you head out into the pristine waters of this renowned fishing haven. As you depart from the dock, the anticipation builds. The Shallow Sport Classic, designed for superior performance in shallow waters, effortlessly glides over the clear, turquoise flats of the Laguna Madre. The boat's shallow draft allows you to access the prime fishing spots that larger vessels can't reach, ensuring an optimal experience in the quest for redfish, trout, flounder, and black drum. The guide, experienced and knowledgeable about the local waters, navigates to the first fishing spot. Here, the calm, shallow waters are ideal for sight fishing. The guide points out a school of redfish, their coppery bodies glinting just below the surface. You cast your line with precision, and almost immediately, you feel the tug of a redfish on your hook. The fight is intense, but with skill and patience, you reel in a beautiful redfish, its vibrant colors shimmering in the sunlight. Next, the boat heads to slightly deeper waters where speckled trout are known to be abundant. Using live bait or artificial lures, you cast into the deeper channels and soon find yourself battling a large trout. The thrill of the catch and the beauty of these speckled fish make for an unforgettable experience. As the day progresses, the focus shifts to flounder and black drum. The boat drifts quietly over sandy bottoms and grassy flats, perfect habitats for these species. Flounder, with their unique, flat bodies, offer a different kind of challenge, often requiring a slower, more deliberate approach. When you finally hook one, the reward is a delicious, flaky fish that's a favorite among local chefs. The black drum, known for their strength and size, provide yet another exciting challenge. These fish are often found near oyster beds and grassy shorelines. Their distinctive black and white stripes and the drumming sound they make when caught add to the unique experience of fishing in the Laguna Madre. Reeling in a large black drum is a true test of your angling skills, providing a satisfying sense of accomplishment. Throughout the trip, the stunning backdrop of the Lower Laguna Madre enhances the experience. The wide-open skies, the distant outline of the barrier islands, and the occasional sighting of dolphins playing in the waves create a picturesque setting. Whether you're an experienced angler or a novice, the guide offers tips and techniques to improve your chances of landing the big one, ensuring a memorable and productive day on the water. As the sun begins to set, casting a golden glow over the bay, the boat heads back to the dock. The day's catch is a testament to the rich biodiversity and excellent fishing opportunities that the Lower Laguna Madre offers. Whether you choose to take your catch home for a fresh seafood dinner or practice catch and release, the memories of this incredible fishing adventure will stay with you long after you leave the water. What techniques are popular for inshore fishing in South Padre Island?

Inshore fishing in South Padre Island offers anglers a rich tapestry of techniques to entice and reel in the diverse coastal species found in the area's bountiful waters. One prevalent technique embraced by anglers is sight casting, especially during the warmer months when the clear, shallow flats of the Laguna Madre provide optimal visibility. This method involves visually spotting fish cruising in the shallows and precisely casting lures or bait to entice a strike. Whether targeting redfish tailing in the grass or speckled trout ambushing prey, sight casting adds an exhilarating visual element to inshore fishing in South Padre Island.

Wade fishing is another popular technique that allows anglers to immerse themselves in the aquatic environment while targeting fish in the shallows. With expansive flats and meandering channels, South Padre Island provides excellent opportunities for anglers to don waders and explore the bay on foot. Wade fishing allows for stealthy approaches to fishing spots and a hands-on experience with the coastal landscape. It's an effective method for reaching areas inaccessible by boat and connecting more intimately with the inshore fishing experience.

For those preferring a more mobile approach, poling skiffs are a common sight along the shallow waters of South Padre Island. Skiff fishing involves utilizing a shallow-draft boat with a poling platform, allowing anglers to navigate the flats quietly and efficiently. Skiffs provide access to a variety of inshore habitats, and anglers can stand on the platform to gain a better vantage point for spotting fish. Whether sight casting to tailing redfish or probing seagrass beds for speckled trout, the versatility of poling skiffs enhances the inshore fishing experience in South Padre Island.

I have fished all over the world and been a guide myself for many years and I would highly recommend the fishing experience Captain Russell provides. If you are wanting to take your family out for a great afternoon of fishing Captain Russell is who you need to book with hands down. He had us on fish early and often despite the windy conditions. My youngest, who is 7, caught his personal best on this trip. We will definitely be back to fish with Captain Russell again!

What an outstanding time that we had with Captain Mike. This was our very first time boat fishing and we had done so at the request of my son for his 17th birthday. Captain Mike was incredibly accommodating, very easy to communicate with and more importantly knowledgeable when it comes to fishing. He was incredibly patient, taught each person in our group of four how to properly cast and really made sure that we had a good time (and also made sure we caught our limit, I have no doubt he would have stayed out there all day to make it happen.) I'm new at this but I am sure this is the type of experience you hope for with this sort of activity. Book this gut y'all. I PROMISE you that you will not be disappointed. Thanks again Captain Mike for a memorable experience!!!!!

My nephew and I went out with Captain Mike on Jan 27th, 2024. Captain Mike was very approachable and personable with his introduction. He set up some rigs before we left the pier which only took a few minutes. His boat is a very comfortable and nicely setup. When we arrived at the fishing location Captain Mike was very informative on what to do and how to do it. He is very patient and informative. We set up a 5-hour trip but had our limits of Red Drum and Speckled Trout in only 3 hours of fishing time. He knew exactly where to go and what to do. When we arrived back at the pier there was a very kind gentleman waiting to clean our fish for us. He will clean them any you want them. I give Captain Mike a solid 5-star review and I will return to fish with him again in the future. THANK YOU, CAPTAIN MIKE, for a fantastic time.

During our trip, Captain Mike consistently put us on fish in multiple situations despite what I would consider fairly difficult weather conditions. He did a great job with my 12-year old son, who happily landed his first ever slot red, along with several other nice trout and redfish. We would definitely love to fish with Captain Mike again!
