trip description for Wading the Laguna Madre in South Padre Island

Captain Alfonso is your man if you’re looking to get out and wade the waters of South Texas. You'll need your own waders and wading boots if you don't want to get wet, but feel free to stalk ‘em in skinny water in a bathing suit, shorts, and boots in the warmer spring and summer months. For these trips, Captain Alfonso runs a 24' 2022 Shallow Master, with a brand-new Suzuki 200-HP outboard—but you won't be spending all too much time on the boat given that you'll be in the water actively fishing. Wading can be tremendously advantageous to the angler looking to hone in on specific areas where big fish hang out. Though wading trips can be fun for all skill levels and Captain Alfonso is a master a teaching his clients the best techniques, we do recommend wading trips for anglers with more experience. He is flexible with pickups as he can pick up on South Padre Island or Arroyo City. Take a trip with Captain Alfonso to experience premium wading fishing! Read More

What is snook fishing in South Padre Island all about?

In South Padre Island, Texas, snook are a prized catch among anglers, renowned for their elusive nature and powerful fights. These sleek and silvery fish inhabit the warm coastal waters of the Gulf of Mexico, including the shallow flats, mangrove-lined creeks, bridges, and docks found around South Padre Island. Known for their cunning behavior, snook are often regarded as one of the most challenging game fish to target, making them a sought-after trophy for anglers of all skill levels.

One of the best times to target snook in South Padre Island is during the spring and fall seasons, when water temperatures are ideal and the fish are more active. During these periods, snook move into shallower waters to feed voraciously on baitfish and crustaceans. Anglers can often find success targeting snook along mangrove shorelines, grass flats, and around structures such as docks and bridges. Using live bait such as mullet, pinfish, or shrimp, as well as artificial lures like soft plastics and topwater plugs, anglers can entice these elusive predators into striking.

What techniques are popular for catching snook in South Padre Island?

In South Padre Island, Texas, anglers employ a variety of effective techniques to target snook, known for their elusive nature and thrilling fights. One popular method among anglers is using live bait, particularly mullet, pinfish, or shrimp. Anglers often present these live baits near mangrove shorelines, grass flats, and around structures such as docks and bridges, where snook are known to congregate. Using a light fluorocarbon leader and stealthy presentation, anglers can entice snook into striking and enjoy the exhilarating battles that follow.

Artificial lures are also effective for targeting snook in South Padre Island. Anglers often use a variety of lures, including soft plastics, topwater plugs, and suspending twitch baits, to mimic the movement of baitfish and entice strikes from snook. Working these lures along the edges of mangroves, over grass flats, or around structure can be particularly productive. Anglers may vary their retrieval speed and presentation to find what triggers a response from the snook, adding an element of finesse to the fishing experience.

Drift fishing is another popular technique for targeting snook in South Padre Island, especially when fishing in deeper channels or around submerged structure. Anglers can drift with the current while presenting live baits or lures at various depths to cover a wide area and locate active snook. This method allows anglers to explore different areas and adjust their presentation based on the behavior of the fish, increasing their chances of success throughout the day. Mike knew the bay very well and did his best to put us on fish. I only had two issues with the trip. It might just be his personality, but I found him to be condescending when I asked questions. I also think he fishes too much. It was like we paid to take him fishing.

Ladies loved the trip and caught big fish. One trout was 24" and was released due to conservation rules. One of our reds needed a tag to keep. Highly recommend Alana as a fun and knowledgeable fishing guide in SPI.

What an outstanding time that we had with Captain Mike. This was our very first time boat fishing and we had done so at the request of my son for his 17th birthday. Captain Mike was incredibly accommodating, very easy to communicate with and more importantly knowledgeable when it comes to fishing. He was incredibly patient, taught each person in our group of four how to properly cast and really made sure that we had a good time (and also made sure we caught our limit, I have no doubt he would have stayed out there all day to make it happen.) I'm new at this but I am sure this is the type of experience you hope for with this sort of activity. Book this gut y'all. I PROMISE you that you will not be disappointed. Thanks again Captain Mike for a memorable experience!!!!!

My nephew and I went out with Captain Mike on Jan 27th, 2024. Captain Mike was very approachable and personable with his introduction. He set up some rigs before we left the pier which only took a few minutes. His boat is a very comfortable and nicely setup. When we arrived at the fishing location Captain Mike was very informative on what to do and how to do it. He is very patient and informative. We set up a 5-hour trip but had our limits of Red Drum and Speckled Trout in only 3 hours of fishing time. He knew exactly where to go and what to do. When we arrived back at the pier there was a very kind gentleman waiting to clean our fish for us. He will clean them any you want them. I give Captain Mike a solid 5-star review and I will return to fish with him again in the future. THANK YOU, CAPTAIN MIKE, for a fantastic time.

David D. with Mike K. of South Padre Island, Texas

  • ★★★★★
During our trip, Captain Mike consistently put us on fish in multiple situations despite what I would consider fairly difficult weather conditions. He did a great job with my 12-year old son, who happily landed his first ever slot red, along with several other nice trout and redfish. We would definitely love to fish with Captain Mike again!

Jason C. with Mike K. of South Padre Island, Texas

Captain Alana was awesome! Very professional, had the boat clean and gear ready to go as soon as we got to the dock we were off. Boat was good size had plenty of room for everyone to walk around. Even took us close to the launch site to see the Space X Starship. She was constantly on the phone with other guides trying to find the best bite possible. We caught Speckled Trout, large Catfish and saw a bunch of large red drums but even hitting them in the head with the bait they wouldn't bite... Had a weather change and rockets going off in the area so may have had something to do with it. But we were the only boat that day really catching anything. I would highly recommend Captain Alana. Will decently book her for future visits to go Tarpon Fishing!!!

Captain Juan was great and we had a fun day on the boat! It was grandparents, parents and 8 year old twins so great for all ages. Juan was so patient with the kids and very attentive to making sure everyone was always baited and having fun fishing. We are complete beginners and he was super informative on what we were catching and teaching the boys how to fish. There’s no shade or restroom on the boat so plan accordingly with sunscreen and proper clothes and a bathroom break before the trip. We brought snacks and drinks with us which was great to have on hand. We caught a variety of fish even if not all were keepers. All in all it was a perfect day out on the water.

The trip was great and Arturo did a great job getting us out on fish! Our trip was cut short due to a storm but that was out of our captains hands! Highly recommend Arturo's services! Can't wait to go back!

Great guide! We had a wonderful time, nearly limited out. Arturo moved us to a few different spots, ended up on the edge of a channel on a pretty hot spot. Caught a lot of near keepers and a few extra species as well. Great trip, a lot of fun and will definitely use Arturo again!
