On your private charter, we’ll venture out to the Deep Sea Nearshore waters on the Gulf of Mexico for a 4, 5 or 6 hour trip to target a wide range of species to include Snapper, Grouper, Mahi, Mackerel, Tuna, Cobia and Sharks. We’re typically fishing well within sight of land anywhere between 2 - 9 miles offshore, but don’t think for a moment this has an impact on the quality or the quantity of the fish you’ll catch! The coastal waters off of Destin quickly reach depths in excess of 100 feet within the first few miles. Due to this unique coastal reef geography, fish of all shapes and sizes call these waters home. This allows minimal travel times to your fishing spots thus increasing your actual time fishing. While out on the boat you’ll often see dolphins, sea turtles and other marine life. Our family-friendly guides will coach you to success on catching the fish of your dreams and make sure everyone has a fun time fishing. Once your trip is over we will clean, filet, bag and ice your catch. trip description for Captain’s Choice: Troll + Shark in Destin

The Captain’s Choice charter trips include 1 hour of light tackle trolling, followed by 4 hours of shark fishing! Fun for the whole family! We are located behind Dewey Destin’s on the harbor. We share a parking lot with Luther’s Pontoon and Dewey’s. Please pull all the way down the hill to the water the morning of (free parking) and we can get everyone loaded up. We recommend you bring drinks/snacks and sunscreen. It will be hot! But we do have AC inside the boat as well as a restroom. We leave the dock at 5:30am so we ask if you could try and come a few minutes early so we can get everyone signed in and load your bags on the boat. A run down of our trolling charters: We have out 3-4 rods at a time and are continuously moving. We will pull lures through the water as we cruise through the Emerald Coast. You'll get to see an amazing sunrise (and probably some dolphins). Our targeted species are king Mackerel, Spanish mackerel, and bonitas. Light tackle trolling is fun for all ages, and the bite lately has been great first thing in the morning. A run down of our shark fishing charters: We make our way to our shark fishing spot, which is only about 10 mins away/less than a mile off shore. Then we will then throw the anchor and chum the waters with carcasses from the previous day and get our 3 big shark rods out. We have them all at different levels, one at the bottom, one mid-water and one floating on top. After we get those out and everyone is comfy we will get a couple of bottom fishing rods out to try and catch some snappers, trigger fish, etc. This is what we will do while we wait for the shark bite. The sharks will smell our chum and come to us so we have to be patient. Once we get the shark hooked up, we will get all of the other rods reeled in, throw the poly ball connected to our anchor and fight the shark. This way we can move with the shark and back down on him if needed. I hope this was helpful! Please let me know if you have any questions. We look forward to fishing with y'all. Read More

What is spanish mackerel fishing in Destin all about?

In Destin, Florida, Spanish mackerel are a popular and abundant species sought after by anglers for their fast-paced action and delicious taste. These sleek and agile fish inhabit the nearshore waters of the Gulf of Mexico, making them accessible targets for anglers fishing from piers, jetties, and boats. Spanish mackerel are known for their distinctive greenish-blue backs, silver sides, and razor-sharp teeth, making them formidable predators that feed on small fish and crustaceans.

One effective technique for targeting Spanish mackerel in Destin is trolling along the coastline or nearshore waters. Anglers troll with small spoons, plugs, or flashy lures behind the boat at varying speeds to mimic the movement of baitfish. Spanish mackerel are attracted to fast-moving lures and are known for their aggressive strikes, providing anglers with exhilarating action as they reel in these speedy fish. Trolling allows anglers to cover a large area of water and locate schools of mackerel actively feeding near the surface.

Moreover, anglers can also target Spanish mackerel using casting or jigging techniques from piers, jetties, or beaches. Anglers cast small jigs, spoons, or shiny lures into the surf or around structure-rich areas where Spanish mackerel congregate. Retrieving the lures with quick, erratic movements mimics the fleeing behavior of baitfish, enticing strikes from hungry mackerel. Additionally, anglers can use live bait such as small fish or shrimp suspended under a float to attract Spanish mackerel within casting distance. With their aggressive feeding behavior and thrilling fights, Spanish mackerel provide anglers in Destin with exciting opportunities for light tackle action and memorable catches.

What are the most popular months to fish for spanish mackerel in Destin?

In Destin, Florida, Spanish mackerel can be targeted by anglers throughout much of the year, with peak seasons presenting ideal conditions for successful fishing endeavors. Typically, the Spanish mackerel season in Destin is most productive during the spring and summer months, from March to August. During this period, warmer water temperatures draw Spanish mackerel closer to shore, where they can be found in abundance feeding on baitfish schools. Anglers often encounter larger concentrations of Spanish mackerel during these months, making it an optimal time for targeting these fast and feisty fish.

Another peak Spanish mackerel season in Destin occurs in the fall, from September to November. As water temperatures gradually cool, Spanish mackerel continue their coastal migrations, providing anglers with continued opportunities to catch these prized fish. During the fall season, Spanish mackerel may move slightly farther offshore, but they can still be found in nearshore waters around reefs, jetties, and piers. Anglers can expect active feeding behavior from Spanish mackerel during this time, making fall an excellent season for targeting these high-energy fish.

While Spanish mackerel can be caught in Destin throughout the year, anglers may encounter fluctuations in their abundance and behavior depending on prevailing environmental conditions. Factors such as water temperature, currents, and baitfish availability can influence the movements and feeding patterns of Spanish mackerel. Anglers should adapt their fishing strategies accordingly, focusing on areas where Spanish mackerel are most likely to be found based on seasonal patterns and local knowledge. With their year-round presence and peak seasons offering optimal conditions, Spanish mackerel provide anglers in Destin with exciting opportunities for light tackle action and memorable catches.

What techniques are popular for catching spanish mackerel in Destin?

In Destin, Florida, anglers employ various effective fishing techniques to target Spanish mackerel, offering thrilling opportunities for both beginners and seasoned fishermen. One popular method is trolling along the coastline or nearshore waters, where Spanish mackerel are known to congregate in search of baitfish. Anglers troll with small spoons, plugs, or flashy lures behind the boat at varying speeds to mimic the movement of the mackerel's prey. Trolling allows anglers to cover a large area of water and locate schools of mackerel actively feeding near the surface, resulting in exciting strikes and fast-paced action.

Another productive technique for catching Spanish mackerel in Destin is casting or jigging from piers, jetties, or beaches. Anglers cast small jigs, spoons, or shiny lures into the surf or around structure-rich areas where Spanish mackerel often gather. Retrieving the lures with quick, erratic movements mimics the fleeing behavior of baitfish, enticing strikes from hungry mackerel. This technique is particularly effective when mackerel are feeding close to shore, providing anglers with thrilling battles and memorable catches from land-based locations.

Moreover, anglers can target Spanish mackerel using live bait such as small fish or shrimp suspended under a float or free-lined behind the boat. Anchoring near reefs, jetties, or other structure-rich areas, anglers present live bait to actively feeding mackerel, enticing them to bite. This technique requires patience and precise presentation, but it can yield rewarding results, especially when Spanish mackerel are feeding aggressively. With their aggressive nature and willingness to strike a variety of baits and lures, Spanish mackerel provide anglers in Destin with exciting opportunities for light tackle action and memorable catches.

What other species are popular in Destin?

Aside from Spanish mackerel, Destin, Florida, offers anglers a diverse range of species to target, ensuring an exciting and varied fishing experience. One notable catch in these waters is the red snapper, prized for its firm flesh and delicious taste. Red snapper inhabit the reefs and offshore structures around Destin, making them accessible targets for anglers fishing from boats. Using bottom fishing techniques with baited rigs or artificial lures, anglers can entice red snapper to bite. With their strong fighting abilities and impressive size, red snapper provide anglers with thrilling battles and memorable catches.

Moreover, anglers visiting Destin can also target species such as king mackerel and Spanish mackerel, which inhabit the nearshore waters of the Gulf of Mexico. King mackerel, known for their speed and aggressive strikes, provide anglers with fast-paced action offshore. Spanish mackerel, found in shallower waters, are popular targets for anglers fishing from piers, jetties, and beaches. Both species are known for their acrobatic leaps and powerful runs, offering anglers exciting battles on light tackle.

Furthermore, Destin is renowned for its abundance of grouper species, including gag grouper, red grouper, and black grouper. These bottom-dwelling predators are commonly found around reefs, wrecks, and underwater structures in the Gulf of Mexico. Anglers often use live bait such as squid, mullet, or pinfish, or artificial lures like jigs or diving plugs, to entice grouper into biting. With their impressive size and strength, grouper provide anglers with challenging fights and rewarding catches. Whether targeting red snapper, mackerel, grouper, or other species, anglers in Destin have numerous options for an unforgettable fishing adventure along Florida's Emerald Coast.

Captain Jason is very knowledgeable and worked hard to assure we had a safe and enjoyable trip. The two youngsters on board, ages 11 and 12, had a blast catching snappers and a variety of other species while bottom fishing. Later switched to trolling for mahi and kings but those species didn't want to cooperate that day. His 26ft boat offered a stable and dry ride for our 5 person charter even in a light chop well offshore. Captain Jason well deserves his 5 star "damn good" rating and we will definitely contact him should we decide to fish this area again.

Stellar Review for an Unforgettable Fish Charter Experience Our recent fish charter experience with Captain Katie and her first mate, Nick, was nothing short of phenomenal! I took my 13 and 11-year-old boys shark fishing, and Captain Katie did not disappoint. We landed an impressive 9' tiger shark that gave us an exhilarating challenge and wore us out in the best way possible. The excitement didn't stop there. Captain Katie expertly guided us to prime spots where we caught mackerel, bonita, and snapper, keeping the adrenaline high and the action continuous. We go charter fishing every year, and I can confidently say that this was the most enjoyable and memorable trip we've ever had. The crew's professionalism, expertise, and friendly demeanor made the entire experience exceptional. I highly recommend this crew for anyone looking for an unforgettable fishing adventure!
