What is scamp grouper fishing in Destin all about?

Scamp grouper, prized for their delicious flesh and challenging fight, are a sought-after species among anglers in Destin. These fish inhabit the rocky bottoms, ledges, and reef structures found offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. Scamp grouper are known for their distinctive coloration, featuring a reddish-brown body with white spots and bars. They can often be found lurking in crevices and caves, waiting to ambush passing prey such as small fish and crustaceans.

In Destin, scamp grouper fishing is most productive during the spring and fall seasons when these fish are most active and abundant. During these times, scamp grouper migrate closer to shore and congregate around offshore reefs and ledges, offering anglers ample opportunities to target them. However, scamp grouper can be caught year-round in Destin, with experienced anglers often finding success during the summer and winter months as well.

Anglers targeting scamp grouper in Destin typically use bottom fishing techniques, dropping down live bait or jigging with artificial lures to entice these wary fish. Heavy tackle is often employed to handle the strong fighting capabilities of scamp grouper and to prevent them from retreating into their rocky hiding spots. Patience and persistence are key when fishing for scamp grouper, as they can be selective feeders and may require some finesse to coax into biting. Overall, targeting scamp grouper in Destin provides anglers with an exciting and rewarding fishing experience in the rich offshore waters of the Gulf Coast.

What are the most popular months to fish for scamp grouper in Destin?

In Destin, Florida, scamp grouper seasons follow the typical patterns found in the Gulf of Mexico region. These seasons are largely influenced by factors such as water temperature, spawning behavior, and migratory patterns. Generally, scamp grouper fishing peaks during the spring and fall months when water temperatures are moderate and these fish are most active. During these seasons, scamp grouper migrate closer to shore, congregating around offshore reefs, ledges, and other underwater structures where they feed voraciously.

Spring and fall are considered prime seasons for scamp grouper fishing in Destin due to the increased abundance of these fish and their willingness to take bait or lures. Anglers can expect to encounter larger numbers of scamp grouper during these times, providing ample opportunities for successful fishing trips. However, scamp grouper can be caught year-round in Destin, with experienced anglers often finding success during the summer and winter months as well.

During the summer, scamp grouper may move into deeper waters to escape the heat, making them slightly more challenging to locate. Nevertheless, with the right techniques and equipment, anglers can still target scamp grouper successfully during this time. Similarly, in the winter, scamp grouper may move to deeper offshore waters, but they remain accessible to anglers willing to venture out in search of them. Overall, while spring and fall are typically considered the best seasons for scamp grouper fishing in Destin, opportunities exist year-round for anglers to enjoy targeting these prized fish.

What techniques are popular for catching scamp grouper in Destin?

When targeting scamp grouper in Destin, anglers employ various fishing techniques to increase their chances of success. One common method is bottom fishing using live or dead bait. Anglers typically anchor their boats over known reef structures or ledges where scamp grouper congregate. They then drop baited hooks or jigging rigs to the bottom and wait for the grouper to strike. Live bait options include pinfish, mullet, and squid, while dead bait such as cut fish or squid can also be effective.

Another effective technique for catching scamp grouper in Destin is vertical jigging. Anglers use heavy metal jigs that mimic the movement of prey fish, such as cigar minnows or sardines, which scamp grouper feed on. By dropping these jigs vertically near the bottom and then jigging them up and down, anglers can entice strikes from feeding grouper. Vertical jigging allows anglers to cover a lot of water efficiently and can be particularly effective when targeting suspended fish or fishing in deeper waters.

Trolling is also a popular method for targeting scamp grouper in Destin, especially when fishing in offshore waters. Anglers troll with diving plugs or weighted rigs near underwater structures where scamp grouper are known to inhabit. This technique allows anglers to cover a large area of water and locate active fish. Additionally, trolling allows anglers to target scamp grouper while also having the opportunity to catch other species such as king mackerel, barracuda, and mahi-mahi. Overall, employing a combination of these fishing techniques can increase the likelihood of a successful scamp grouper fishing trip in Destin.

What other species are popular in Destin?

In addition to scamp grouper, Destin offers a diverse range of fish species for anglers to target, providing an exciting and varied fishing experience. One popular species to catch in the area is red snapper. These prized fish are abundant in the waters around Destin, especially during their peak season in the summer months. Anglers can target red snapper using various techniques such as bottom fishing with live or dead bait, as well as trolling near underwater structures.

Another sought-after species in Destin is king mackerel, known for their speed and powerful runs. These pelagic fish are often found near offshore reefs, wrecks, and artificial structures. Anglers commonly target king mackerel by trolling with live bait, artificial lures, or rigged baits behind planers or downriggers. They can also be caught by vertical jigging or casting near bait schools.

Mahi-mahi, also known as dolphin fish or dorado, are another exciting species to target in Destin's offshore waters. These colorful fish are known for their acrobatic leaps and high-speed runs, providing an exhilarating fight for anglers. Mahi-mahi are often found around floating debris, weed lines, and offshore structures where they feed on baitfish and other prey. Anglers typically target mahi-mahi by trolling with artificial lures, rigged baits, or live bait such as small fish or squid. Additionally, casting with surface lures or fly fishing can also be effective when targeting mahi-mahi in Destin's waters.

We did not go with Captain Robert. We went with Captain Tim. Captain Robert called me the day before the trip to confirm the fishing trip and our plan for the day. We were to meet at the dock at 6:00. The day of the trip, Captain Robert texted me and said we would leave at 7:00 due to the weather. On the way to the dock, a got a call asking were we still going on the trip. I informed them that we were on the way and I was told to be there at 7:00. When we got to the dock, we had two Captains waiting on us. We were informed that there was a mix up and we were going with Captain Tim. We had to stop and get fuel, ice and bait. We trolled near shore and hooked up with a big fish. A dolphin took our fish. My oldest son got seasick. Water was very rough. We returned my son to shore. We started trolling again. Every time we hooked up with a decent fish, dolphins got our catch. We did catch several Bennita's. Alarm on boat started going off. We checked the motor and Captain called to attempt to trouble shoot. Both motors would not start. Finally got motor started but ran with one motor. We could not go to better bottom fishing spot due to running one motor. We came in early due to one motor and alarm going off constantly. Terrible experience! Screwed up from the start.

Five of us did the 8 hour trolling and bottom fishing. It was an amazing experience from start to finish and we caught a barrel of fish including vermilion snapper, triggerfish, grouper and an Atlantic bluefish. We caught and released several out of season fish as well. Captian Kyle and Mate Danny are super friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and made the trip an outstanding one. We were all first timers and they made us look and feel like seasoned pros.

We fished with Capt'n Blake on the 32 Sportsman. Blake was friendly, energetic and most of all, he was determined to put us on the fish. My 13 year old son and his friend were with us, and Blake was extremely attentive and helpful with the youth anglers. I would highly recommend Capt'n Blake, and Captain Experiences, and I would book this same exact trip again if given the opportunity. Tight lines!

Great trip, Kyle and Danny worked full time plus to get us on fish and get those fish into the boat. We limited out on red snapper and caught several other fish as well. Overall a good day of fishing , next time we will make it a longer trip hoping to find the bigger fish by getting out further and finding the more isolated spots holding some biggies. Thanks to both for a great trip. Jerry, Mike, Shelby and Peyton
