Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Black drum, known for their distinctive drumming sound and robust fighting abilities, inhabit a variety of habitats including marshes, estuaries, and nearshore waters. These fish are prized not only for their fighting prowess but also for their delicious white flesh, making them a sought-after target for anglers of all skill levels.

Anglers in Boothville-Venice employ a variety of techniques to target black drum, with one common method being bottom fishing using bait such as shrimp, crab, or cut bait. Black drum are opportunistic feeders and often forage along the seafloor in search of prey. Anglers present their baits near structures such as oyster beds, rock piles, and channel edges where black drum are known to congregate, enticing strikes from these bottom-dwelling fish. Additionally, anglers may use light tackle or spinning gear to provide an exciting challenge when battling black drum.

Black drum fishing in Boothville-Venice offers anglers a year-round opportunity, with these fish being present in the area throughout much of the year. While black drum can be caught in various habitats and depths, they are particularly abundant in the shallow waters of marshes and estuaries during the spring and summer months. During this time, black drum gather in large schools to spawn, providing anglers with excellent fishing opportunities. Whether targeting black drum for their fighting qualities or their culinary value, anglers in Boothville-Venice can enjoy a rewarding and memorable fishing experience pursuing these prized game fish.

While spring and summer are typically the most productive seasons for black drum fishing in Boothville-Venice, these fish can still be targeted with varying success throughout the year. During the fall months, black drum may migrate to deeper waters as temperatures cool, but they can still be found in estuaries, channels, and around structures such as docks and jetties. Winter can also offer opportunities for black drum fishing, especially during periods of mild weather when fish may move into shallower areas to feed. What techniques are popular for catching black drum in Boothville-Venice?

In Boothville-Venice, anglers utilize a variety of effective techniques to target black drum, leveraging their knowledge of the species' behavior and preferred habitats in the coastal waters of the Gulf of Mexico. One popular method for black drum fishing is bottom fishing, where anglers present baits such as shrimp, crab, or cut bait near the seafloor using weighted rigs. Black drum are known to forage along the bottom in search of prey, making bottom fishing a productive technique, particularly around structures such as oyster beds, rock piles, and channel edges where these fish congregate. Anglers often use light to medium tackle when bottom fishing for black drum, providing enough strength to handle these powerful fish while still offering an exciting challenge.

Another effective technique for black drum fishing in Boothville-Venice is sight casting, particularly during the spring and summer months when these fish gather in shallow waters for spawning. Anglers sight cast by scanning the surface for signs of feeding activity or cruising fish, then presenting baits or lures directly to the target. This method requires stealth and precision, as black drum can be easily spooked in shallow water. Sight casting allows anglers to target individual fish and capitalize on the black drum's feeding behavior, offering a thrilling and rewarding fishing experience.

Chumming is also a commonly used technique by anglers targeting black drum in Boothville-Venice, particularly when fishing in estuaries, marshes, or around structures such as docks and jetties. Anglers deploy a mixture of chopped baitfish, fish oil, and other attractants into the water to create a chum slick, drawing black drum to the area and stimulating their feeding behavior. Once black drum are attracted to the chum slick, anglers present baits or lures directly into the feeding zone, enticing strikes from hungry fish. Chumming can be an effective way to attract and catch black drum, particularly in areas where natural bait is scarce or when targeting larger specimens.

What other species are popular in Boothville-Venice?

Aside from targeting black drum, anglers in Boothville-Venice have a plethora of other species to pursue, ensuring a diverse and thrilling fishing experience in the Gulf of Mexico. One prominent species is the redfish, also known as red drum, prized for its strength and resilience. Redfish inhabit a variety of habitats including marshes, estuaries, and shallow flats, where they feed on crustaceans, baitfish, and mollusks. Anglers targeting redfish often use techniques such as sight casting with artificial lures or live bait fishing with shrimp or mullet, presenting their offerings near structure or along the shoreline to entice strikes from these hard-fighting fish.

Another sought-after species in Boothville-Venice is the speckled trout, known for its elusive nature and delicious flesh. Speckled trout can be found in a range of habitats including marshes, bayous, and nearshore flats, where they prey on small fish, shrimp, and other invertebrates. Anglers targeting speckled trout often use light spinning tackle with artificial lures such as soft plastics or topwater plugs, presenting their offerings in areas with submerged grass beds, oyster bars, or current breaks. Speckled trout fishing in Boothville-Venice provides anglers with exciting opportunities to test their skills and reel in trophy-sized specimens.

In addition to redfish and speckled trout, Boothville-Venice offers anglers the chance to target a variety of other species, including flounder, sheepshead, and tripletail, among others. Flounder inhabit the sandy bottoms and tidal creeks of coastal waters, where they ambush prey using their camouflage. Anglers often use live bait such as mud minnows or shrimp presented near the bottom to entice strikes from flounder. Sheepshead, known for their distinctive teeth and fondness for structure, can be targeted around docks, pilings, and jetties using bait such as fiddler crabs or barnacles. Tripletail, characterized by their unique appearance and habit of floating near surface structure, can be targeted using live bait or artificial lures presented near buoys, weed lines, or floating debris. Whether targeting redfish, speckled trout, flounder, sheepshead, or tripletail, anglers in Boothville-Venice are sure to find plenty of excitement and adventure on the water.

James is a true captain that has the fisherman in mind at all times. First he knows the area and is safe. He worked hard to get us on fish and we tried several areas before we were successful. He found the fish though and then we stayed to get some in the box. I have been on many fishing trips and James is at the top of my list. He is personable and cares about his clients. Captain Daryl was incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and laid-back. He made our fishing trip beginner-friendly and went above and beyond to ensure we caught the fish we were after. We reeled in every species you’d want during our inshore adventure! His teaching skills were top-notch, and he never once made me feel inadequate due to my lack of fishing experience. Plus, he had a great sense of humor that kept us laughing throughout the trip. Best fishing trip I’ve been on! I can't wait to go fishing with him again!

Went out with Captain Davide on June 5,2023. His in depth knowledge of the waters ( fishing he area since he was 9y.o.) really made the difference. We were on fish almost all day. He knew how to target each species and the best place to get them. He organized the day to target species that would keep us reeling fish in. Combination of American reds (15), Tuna(6), and variety of other species . Not to mention the wahoo that broke me off ( Damn near the biggest I ever saw). Ended with a day of heat exhaustion for me, 2 hours of fish cleaning for David, and buying 3 extra coolers for the haul home. Be careful...... There is alot of mean mugging at the cleaning station. Most everyone else got skunked that day. Thanks Capt. David Dr, James Hill Ft. Lauderdale Fl.

Mr. Daryl is the first charter I've ever taken, and I would not hesitate to book him again. From the first minute you meet him, he's cutting up with jokes and makes you feel like you've known him for a long time. He quickly put us into a steady supply of HUGE trout. Not a single one had to be thrown back. Can't wait to do this again.
