Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What is Inshore fishing in Buras all about?

Inshore fishing in Buras, Louisiana, offers anglers an exceptional opportunity to explore the rich and diverse ecosystem of the Mississippi River Delta and its surrounding waters. Situated near the mouth of the Mississippi River, Buras provides access to a labyrinth of marshes, bayous, and coastal flats that teem with a wide variety of fish species. This area is renowned for its world-class fishing opportunities, attracting anglers from around the globe eager to experience the thrill of Louisiana's inshore fisheries.

One of the primary attractions for anglers in Buras is the chance to target species like redfish, speckled trout, and flounder. Redfish, also known as red drum, are abundant in the marshy waters and around oyster beds, where they feed on shrimp, crabs, and small baitfish. These powerful fish provide exciting fights and are typically caught using techniques such as sight fishing with live bait or casting soft plastics. Speckled trout, prized for their delicious meat and challenging fights, are commonly found in deeper channels and grassy flats, making them another popular target among local and visiting anglers alike.

Flounder are also a sought-after catch in Buras's inshore waters, known for their distinctive flat shape and ability to blend seamlessly with sandy bottoms and submerged structure. Anglers often target flounder using live bait such as mullet or mud minnows, as well as artificial lures like jigs and shrimp imitations. The diverse habitat and abundance of fish species make Buras an ideal destination for inshore anglers seeking memorable fishing experiences in the heart of Louisiana's coastal wilderness.

What are the most popular months to go Inshore fishing in Buras?

Inshore fishing seasons in Buras, Louisiana, follow a distinct pattern influenced by the region's subtropical climate and the behaviors of various fish species that inhabit its marshy waters and bayous. Spring marks the beginning of prime fishing season as temperatures warm and fish become more active after the cooler winter months. This season sees the return of species like redfish, speckled trout, and flounder to shallow flats, oyster reefs, and tidal creeks. Anglers can capitalize on the feeding opportunities as these fish move closer to shore to spawn and feed, using live bait such as shrimp or mullet, as well as artificial lures like spoons and soft plastics.

Summer in Buras brings warmer waters and continued fishing excitement, with species like redfish and speckled trout remaining prominent targets. These fish are often found in deeper channels, around submerged structure, and along grassy flats where they seek cooler waters and abundant prey. Summer also provides opportunities to target other species such as sheepshead and black drum, which thrive in the warmer temperatures and provide thrilling battles for anglers using techniques like bottom fishing with live or cut bait.

Fall ushers in a period of transition as temperatures gradually cool, prompting changes in fish behavior and movement patterns once again. This season is particularly favorable for targeting larger "bull" redfish as they move into shallower waters to feed voraciously before winter. Speckled trout also become more active in the shallows, congregating around grass beds and creek mouths where they feed on shrimp and small baitfish. Fall is a prime time for anglers to capitalize on the abundance of fish preparing for colder months, using a variety of techniques to ensure successful outings in Buras's diverse and productive inshore fisheries.

What techniques are popular for Inshore fishing in Buras?

Inshore fishing in Buras, Louisiana, offers anglers a variety of techniques tailored to the unique marshy and bayou environments that characterize the area's coastal waters. One popular technique is sight fishing, particularly effective in the clear, shallow flats and around grass beds where species like redfish and speckled trout are commonly found. Anglers pole skiffs or quietly wade through these areas, scanning the water for signs of movement or tailing fish. They then present live bait such as shrimp or mullet, or carefully selected artificial lures like spoons and soft plastics, to entice strikes from these elusive and prized species.

Another favored method among Buras anglers is using live bait, which includes a variety of options such as shrimp, mullet, and crabs. Live bait fishing is versatile and effective around structures like oyster beds, submerged grass, and docks where predatory fish like flounder and sheepshead often congregate. Anglers typically use a Carolina rig or free-line technique to present the bait naturally in the water column, adjusting their approach based on tidal currents and fish behavior.

For those preferring a more dynamic approach, casting artificial lures is a popular choice in Buras's inshore waters. Anglers utilize a range of lures such as topwater plugs, soft plastics, and jigs to mimic the movement of baitfish or crustaceans that attract species like redfish, speckled trout, and black drum. Casting allows anglers to cover expansive areas and explore different depths and structures, making it an engaging and effective technique for both seasoned anglers and novices looking to experience the thrill of Louisiana's coastal fishing. Overall, Buras provides a wealth of inshore fishing opportunities with techniques that cater to varied preferences and conditions, ensuring an enjoyable and productive angling experience amidst its picturesque marshlands and bayous.

Went out with Captain Davide on June 5,2023. His in depth knowledge of the waters ( fishing he area since he was 9y.o.) really made the difference. We were on fish almost all day. He knew how to target each species and the best place to get them. He organized the day to target species that would keep us reeling fish in. Combination of American reds (15), Tuna(6), and variety of other species . Not to mention the wahoo that broke me off ( Damn near the biggest I ever saw). Ended with a day of heat exhaustion for me, 2 hours of fish cleaning for David, and buying 3 extra coolers for the haul home. Be careful...... There is alot of mean mugging at the cleaning station. Most everyone else got skunked that day. Thanks Capt. David Dr, James Hill Ft. Lauderdale Fl.
