Everything to Know About Booking an Atlantic Beach nearshore fishing charter

What are the best nearshore fishing charters in Atlantic Beach?

What is nearshore fishing in Atlantic Beach all about?

Nearshore fishing in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, offers anglers an exciting opportunity to explore the diverse marine life along the Atlantic Ocean's coastline. Located on the Crystal Coast, Atlantic Beach provides access to a variety of fishing environments, ranging from sandy beaches to nearshore reefs and wrecks. One of the primary targets for nearshore anglers at Atlantic Beach is the red drum, also known as redfish. These powerful fish are abundant in the area's estuaries, marshes, and nearshore waters. Red drums are prized for their strong fights and are a favorite among local anglers. Anglers commonly use live bait such as shrimp, mullet, or cut bait, as well as artificial lures like soft plastics and topwater plugs, to attract strikes from these impressive predators.

Another popular species to catch nearshore at Atlantic Beach is the Spanish mackerel. These fast-swimming pelagic fish are known for their aggressive strikes and acrobatic leaps. Spanish mackerel can be found near inlets, shoals, and along the edges of the Gulf Stream, particularly in the warmer months of the year. Anglers often use trolling techniques with small spoons, feathered lures, or live baitfish to target Spanish mackerel effectively. They adjust their trolling speed and depth to match the fish's behavior and maximize their chances of a successful catch.

In addition to red drum and Spanish mackerel, Atlantic Beach offers opportunities to target a variety of other nearshore species, such as flounder, speckled trout, and various types of reef fish. Anglers employ different techniques, including bottom fishing, casting, and trolling, depending on the target species and prevailing fishing conditions. Whether fishing from a boat, kayak, or casting from shore, nearshore fishing in Atlantic Beach promises thrilling encounters with a diverse range of marine life amidst the backdrop of North Carolina's scenic coastal environment.

What are the most popular months to go nearshore fishing in Atlantic Beach?

Nearshore fishing seasons in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, vary throughout the year, offering anglers distinct opportunities to target different species based on seasonal migrations and water temperatures. Spring marks the beginning of the prime fishing season in Atlantic Beach's nearshore waters. As temperatures rise and baitfish become more abundant, predatory species such as red drum, Spanish mackerel, and flounder become more active in the area's estuaries, tidal creeks, and nearshore reefs. Anglers often find success using live bait such as shrimp, mullet, or artificial lures like soft plastics and topwater plugs to entice strikes from these fish.

Summer brings warmer waters and continued fishing opportunities along Atlantic Beach's coastline. Pelagic species such as Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, and cobia can be found closer to shore, particularly around nearshore reefs, wrecks, and drop-offs. Anglers commonly use trolling techniques with spoons, plugs, or live baitfish to target these fast-swimming predators. Bottom fishing for species like flounder, sheepshead, and black sea bass also remains productive during the summer months, offering a variety of fishing experiences for anglers of all skill levels.

Fall in Atlantic Beach offers another peak fishing season as temperatures begin to cool and fish species prepare for winter migrations. This season is ideal for targeting migrating species such as bull redfish, which gather in large numbers near inlets and along the beaches. Anglers commonly use cut bait, live mullet, or artificial lures to attract strikes from these trophy-sized fish. Fall also presents opportunities to catch speckled trout and other species as they move to deeper waters and feeding grounds along the coast. Whether trolling for pelagic species or bottom fishing for reef dwellers, nearshore fishing in Atlantic Beach provides anglers with a variety of seasonal opportunities and memorable fishing experiences against the backdrop of North Carolina's scenic coastal environment.

What techniques are popular for nearshore fishing in Atlantic Beach?

Nearshore fishing in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, offers anglers a variety of types and techniques suited to the diverse habitats and fish species found along the Crystal Coast. One effective technique for nearshore fishing is bottom fishing, which involves anchoring near underwater structures such as reefs, wrecks, and rocky outcrops and dropping baited hooks or jigs to the ocean floor. Bottom fishing is ideal for targeting species like flounder, black sea bass, sheepshead, and various types of snapper and grouper. Anglers commonly use live bait such as shrimp, squid, or cut bait to attract these bottom-dwelling fish known for their strong fights and excellent table fare.

Casting is another popular method used by anglers in Atlantic Beach to target a variety of nearshore species such as red drum, speckled trout, and Spanish mackerel. This technique involves using artificial lures such as soft plastics, jerkbaits, or topwater plugs to mimic the movements of baitfish or shrimp and entice strikes from predatory fish. Anglers often cast along marsh edges, oyster beds, and shallow flats where these species are known to feed. Casting requires precision and patience as anglers work to present their lures effectively in the water and provoke a reaction from their target species.

Trolling is also a productive technique employed by anglers at Atlantic Beach to cover larger areas of water and target fast-swimming pelagic species such as Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, and cobia. Trolling involves trailing lines with spoons, feathered lures, or live baitfish behind a moving boat at various speeds and depths. Anglers adjust their trolling speed and lure presentation based on fish behavior and water conditions to maximize their chances of a successful catch. Whether bottom fishing, casting, or trolling, nearshore fishing in Atlantic Beach provides anglers with a variety of techniques to explore its scenic coastal waters and diverse marine habitats throughout the year.

I’m an experienced fisherman who wanted to become better at targeting red drum and trout. Joe not only put me in fish, but taught me things about fishing that area that will help me catch fish on my own for years to come. Highly recommend!

Trip: NC Classic Inshore Fishing Trip

We had the best morning with Justin! He was friendly, engaging, and provided a lot of education on the area, the water, the fish, and fishing. We got to explore many different parts of the river to ensure we had ample opportunities to catch both speckled trout and red drum. We also followed a pod of porpoises, which was a fun diversion. Justin cleaned our fish at the end of our excursion which we took home and prepared that evening for dinner. Delicious fish tacos thanks for Justin's guidance and navigation! We look forward to returning to the area and having Justin take us out for another fabulous adventure.
