Launching from Whale Harbor with Captain Larry puts you a mere 30 minutes ride offshore to the Gulf Stream's premier hot spots. Captain Larry and crew won’t waste a moment taking you to the action either. On these trips, you will head out up to 20 miles offshore to troll for Dolphin, Blackfin Tuna, Amberjack, Wahoo, Shark, Marlin, Sailfish, King Mackerel, and more, or stay a little closer to shore to bottom fish/jig the reefs for Snapper, Grouper, Triggerfish, Amberjack and more! If your interest peaked at dolphin/mahi-mahi, you should book your trip from May to October when the population explodes! The charter boat trolls rigged baits and lures to locate schools of dolphin that range from 5 to 50 pounds. Once a school is found, their voracious appetites and abundant numbers result in a feeding frenzy you’ll never forget. And, since Mahi is excellent table fare, you’ll want to keep them for dinner. Your boat’s mate will gladly fillet them and you can arrange to have your catch prepared at any of the local restaurants. From November to April, Captain Larry primarily targets sailfish, using live bait on light tackle. Catching the baitfish (ballyhoo) on the way out to the deep water is a super fun way to start off your adventure (Especially given the prospect that those fish will turn into even bigger fish!) The ballyhoo are chummed up to the surface, where they are caught by cast net or by fishing for them using tiny hair hooks. Once the bait well is full, the boat runs to the outside edge of the reef and the action begins. If you’ve never hooked into a 7-foot-long tail-walking sailfish on light tackle, you’re in for a thrill of a lifetime! We practice catch and release for all bill fishing and ask about no-kill fish mounts. Florida is the only state in America with easily accessible coral reefs. Join us for the amazing opportunity to fish these abundant feeding grounds for nearly 600 species of fish just 20 minutes offshore. You’ll be bottom fishing in calm, sheltered water 10 feet to 30 feet deep for snapper, grouper, yellowtail, hogfish, porgies, grunts, jacks, mackerel and barracuda, to name just a few. Once anchored, chum is put out to create a feeding frenzy right behind the boat to give you non-stop action as you catch fish after fish. Captain Larry's charter rates cover the “First Choice Merritt Sport fishing vessel” guaranteed clean, fueled, and stocked with baits, spare gear, and a clean ice-filled cooler, as well as two expert crew members trained to ensure you have the best fishing experience possible. This way all you need to bring are your favorite snacks and drinks, and Captain Larry will make sure you have an incredible time! Read More

3/4 Day Trip
If you're looking for that once in a lifetime Big Game Fishing experience consider booking our 10-hour Daytime Swordfish charter. Swordfish are typically nocturnal, solitary and aggressive... making them one of the most challenging fisheries in the Keys but also one of the most satisfying, exciting and rewarding. Hooking, battling, and landing one of these giant broadbills is a fishing trip you will remember for a lifetime. And also, yes... they are very tasty on the grill. On a Daytime Swordfish Charter, you will head far offshore, anywhere from 30-40 miles out of Whale Harbor Marina. Your destination is 1300-1900' of water along the continental shelf in the Gulf Stream. On your run to the Sworfishing grounds, Captain Frank will be looking for birds and debris... opportunities to stop and try for Mahi, Tripletail, Tuna or Wahoo. "Based on your preference, we'll decide on either electric or conventional reels. When we reach the Swordfishing grounds we will set up 1 or 2 rods, with 6-10 lbs. of lead. The boat will be under a controlled drift, dragging the bait along the bottom. We use a variety of bait depending on conditions including Squid, Eel, Bonita, Barracuda and Mahi bellies. When fishing with conventional reels we use a break-away weight at the leader. This enables the angler to hand crank the Swordfish the 1300-1900' without the weight attached. One of the biggest determiners of the success of your Swordfish trip is seeing the bite and reacting appropriately to it. When fishing at these depths it can be difficult to see the strike. Typically the rod tip only bounces an inch or so... and we do not want to miss it! This is where an experienced Captain and first mate are so valuable to the success of your Swordfishing Trip. We will coach you on whether to drop the bait back or we may put the boat in gear, enticing the fish or setting the hook. Most Swordfish when hooked will swim toward the surface. It is really the last 300' that the real fight begins! Landing these large broadbills can take anywhere from several minutes to several hours." - Captain Frank Some of the thrill and adrenal of this type of deep-sea fishing is that you won't know exactly what is fighting you at the end of that line. Most likely it is a Swordfish anywhere from 50-200 lbs ... but it could be 500 lbs. or more! or it could be a large Mako Shark or a Blue Fin Tuna! If you're up for the challenge you too can experience the ultimate thrill of victory when you land one of these deep sea giants. Read More

Will J. with Brad P. of Marathon, Florida
We had a blast with Captain Brad and his crew Miles and Whitney! The boat had a toilet, lots of comfortable and covered seating for those that were not fishing. They were great with instructions and techniques on how to land the catch! They knew all the hot spots and we had enough fish to feed an army dinner!
Rachel S. with Brad P. of Marathon, Florida
Our group had 5 people with little to no fishing experience. Brad took us to fish for yellowtale first, about 35 minutes away from the dock. He and his hand Miles showed us how to use the rods properly and we caught about 10 or 12 yellowtales. They were both very friendly and helpful, we all felt comfortable and had a good time. Unfortunately some of us got sea sick so we decided to cut the trip short. Brad had cautioned us about that beforehand and offered to move our trip to a day with calmer weather, what we would have done would we have had the time. We would definitely go with Brad again. He is a friendly local guy and he made the trip fun and personal, not at all commercial like some of the bigger boats. He knows the area and waters very well.
