What techniques are popular for nearshore fishing in Haulover Beach?

Nearshore fishing at Haulover Beach, Florida, offers a variety of techniques suited to the area’s rich marine environment. One popular method is using live bait, such as shrimp, pilchards, or small mullet. Anglers often deploy live bait on rigs like the Carolina rig or under a float to attract species like snook, grouper, and tarpon. The close proximity to the ocean's edge allows for effective bait presentation near rocky structures and drop-offs, which are prime spots for these predatory fish.

Another effective technique at Haulover Beach is casting with artificial lures. Soft plastics, jigs, and topwater plugs are commonly used to mimic the movement of small fish or invertebrates. Techniques such as varying the retrieve speed or incorporating a jerky motion can be particularly successful in enticing species like jack crevalle, trout, and even larger predators like kingfish. The area’s varied underwater structure provides ample opportunities to experiment with different lures and retrieval styles.

Bottom fishing is also a popular choice in the nearshore waters off Haulover Beach. This technique involves using weighted rigs with baited hooks to target bottom-dwelling species such as snapper, sheepshead, and porgies. Anglers often use heavier tackle and sinkers to keep the bait in place amidst the currents and underwater structure. Fishing around reefs, wrecks, or rocky outcrops can enhance the chances of catching these sought-after species. Each of these techniques provides a distinct way to take advantage of the diverse fishing opportunities available at Haulover Beach.

Had the privilege on going out on a charter with Captain Crist. Unfortunately, our previous captain had some issues and canceled our trip last minute. Luckily Captain Crist was able to put us in and we had an absolute blast not only did he come in clutch but he was very knowledgeable and honestly great soul to be around. Definitely will recommend and we’ll probably go again.

Can't say enough good things about Cristobal. He was prepared to leave the dock as soon as we arrived and had us fishing quite efficiently despite the differing knowledge levels of the group. He is patient and a great communicator. If you are a knowledgeable fishermen he will be able to teach you a good bit and if you are a complete beginner he will walk you through things patiently and help you find success. Stop looking at other guides on here and book Cristobal, you can thank me later.

Our trip with Capt. Cris was better than we could have imagined. He showed us how to catch live bait, answered any and all questions we had, and we caught our dinner for the night! Cris cleaned our fish and gave us a great recommendation for where we could take it to be cooked for us that evening. 10/10 experience. Thank you Capt. Cris!!

Maurice and his son took 5 of us out and despite unusual 50 degree rainy weather in Miami we absolutely crushed it. Caught some kingfish, false albacore, and-the cherry on top-a beautiful sailfish. Maurice worked tirelessly to put us on fish and even stayed out a little longer than we should have to get us more bites. He runs a very clean operation and I’ll be back for more.
