Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Working with experienced fishing guides who know the best local spots and techniques can dramatically increase your odds of a great day. Having someone who is on the water every day and knows the area like the back of their hand is going to give you the best chances of success.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

Even if you’ve got a great setup already in your home waters, booking a guide also provides a great opportunity to experience new techniques, new locations, or even a chance at a new target species to knock off the bucket list.

What is nearshore fishing in Hillsboro Inlet all about?

Nearshore fishing in Hillsboro Inlet, located in Pompano Beach, Florida, is a favorite spot for anglers looking to enjoy the rich marine life of the Atlantic coast. The inlet provides easy access to both the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean, creating a diverse fishing environment. The unique combination of brackish waters and proximity to offshore reefs means that fishermen can expect to catch a variety of species without venturing far from shore. This makes Hillsboro Inlet an excellent destination for both beginners and experienced anglers alike.

One of the most exciting aspects of nearshore fishing in Hillsboro Inlet is the opportunity to target a wide range of species. In the shallower waters and along the jetties, anglers can often find snook, tarpon, and jack crevalle. These fish are known for their powerful runs and acrobatic fights, providing thrilling experiences for those casting live bait or artificial lures. The inlet's structure, with its rocks and pilings, creates ideal habitats for these predators, especially during the warmer months when they are most active.

Further out, nearshore reefs and wrecks become prime spots for targeting bottom-dwelling species such as snapper and grouper. These areas can be fished using bottom rigs with bait like squid or cut bait, which attract these delicious and hard-fighting fish. Additionally, during certain times of the year, pelagic species like king mackerel and Spanish mackerel can be found patrolling the nearshore waters. Trolling with lures or drift fishing with live bait can be effective techniques for catching these fast and aggressive fish. Overall, Hillsboro Inlet offers a rich and varied nearshore fishing experience, catering to a wide range of angling preferences and skill levels.

What are the most popular months to go nearshore fishing in Hillsboro Inlet?

Nearshore fishing in Hillsboro Inlet is dynamic and offers excellent opportunities throughout the year, with each season bringing its own unique set of fishing experiences. In the spring, the warming waters invite a surge of activity among many sought-after species. This is an ideal time to target snook and tarpon, which move into the inlet and nearby shallow waters to feed and spawn. The arrival of these powerful fish makes for exciting fishing, especially when using live bait or topwater lures. Additionally, spring sees the return of Spanish mackerel and king mackerel, which can be caught trolling or casting nearshore.

Summer in Hillsboro Inlet is characterized by hot weather and active fish populations. The warm waters attract a variety of species, including snapper, grouper, and barracuda, which can be found around reefs and wrecks. This season is also prime for catching dolphin (mahi-mahi) closer to shore, making for a thrilling nearshore fishing experience. Anglers often head out early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat and to take advantage of the prime fishing hours. Summer thunderstorms are common, so it's essential to monitor the weather and plan accordingly.

Fall brings a gradual cooling of the water, which can stimulate increased activity among many species. Redfish and trout become more prevalent in the inshore waters, providing excellent fishing opportunities. This season also sees a continuation of good snapper and grouper fishing around the nearshore structures. The arrival of mullet schools during the fall migration creates a feeding frenzy, attracting predatory fish like snook and tarpon to the inlet. Winter in Hillsboro Inlet is milder than in many other parts of the country, allowing for year-round fishing. Species like sheepshead, bluefish, and pompano are more common during the cooler months, ensuring that anglers always have something to target.

What techniques are popular for nearshore fishing in Hillsboro Inlet?

Nearshore fishing in Hillsboro Inlet offers anglers a variety of techniques to effectively target the abundant fish species in the area. One popular method is live bait fishing, which is highly effective for catching species like snook, tarpon, and jack crevalle. Live bait such as pilchards, mullet, or shrimp can be drifted or freelined near the jetties and shallow waters around the inlet. This technique allows the bait to move naturally with the current, enticing predatory fish to strike. It's a versatile approach that works well year-round, especially during the warmer months when these species are more active.

Another effective technique in Hillsboro Inlet is trolling, particularly for pelagic species like king mackerel and Spanish mackerel. Anglers use trolling rigs with lures or live bait to cover more ground and locate schools of these fast-moving fish. Trolling is especially productive during the spring and fall when these species are migrating along the coast. By varying the speed and depth of the lures, anglers can increase their chances of hooking into these powerful fighters. Additionally, trolling near the edges of the inlet where currents converge can lead to successful catches.

Bottom fishing is also a staple technique for nearshore fishing in Hillsboro Inlet, targeting species like snapper, grouper, and sheepshead. This method involves dropping weighted rigs with baited hooks to the ocean floor around reefs, wrecks, and rocky structures. Common baits for bottom fishing include cut squid, sardines, and shrimp. Using different types of rigs, such as knocker rigs or high-low rigs, can help present the bait effectively to bottom-dwelling fish. Bottom fishing is particularly productive during the summer and fall when these species are more active in nearshore waters. Whether using live bait, trolling, or bottom fishing, Hillsboro Inlet offers a diverse and rewarding fishing experience for all types of anglers.

We had a great trip and caught lots of Mahi. The Mate stayed busy keeping the sea weed off the lures but the seaweed held lots of Mahi. We caught over 25 fish with 20 keepers over 20”. It was large seas but the captain kept us in fish all day. Just finished a meal of Grilled Mahi with Old Floridian Seasoning and Cilantro Salsa. Thanks!

Awesome time, weather was perfect, Lucas and Damien hunted the fish, great team. It did happen to be a slow day, but we tried trolling, dropping down etc. Put a medium king in the boat for the smoker and released a few trigger fish and a sand tile fish.

It’s a shame that I can only give Captain Ron and Damien 5 stars because they deserve so many more. We booked a charter for four hours at 7AM and we were hoping to catch some Tuna and Mahi Mahi. Captain Ron delivered on both. We also caught a bunch of bonitos and a king fish. Captain Ron was very accommodating, friendly, and a professional. My family and I enjoyed ourselves and got everything we wanted out of this trip & more. A HUGE thank you to you Captain Ron and Damien and we are looking forward to booking again with you in the future!

What a perfect day to be out on the water! I may have gotten a little queasy and didn’t reel in as many fish as I’d hoped, but that didn’t take away from all the fun we had. The kids and our whole crew had an amazing time! Huge thanks to Captain Lucas and Mate Damian for making it such a great experience! 🎣☀️🚤
