Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What are the most popular months to go inshore fishing in Calcasieu Lake?

Inshore fishing in Calcasieu Lake, located in southwestern Louisiana, provides a rich and varied experience throughout the year, thanks to the lake’s diverse aquatic habitat. During the spring and summer months, the warm waters create excellent conditions for fishing, with species such as redfish, speckled trout, and flounder becoming particularly active. The abundance of baitfish and the favorable weather conditions make this period prime for inshore fishing, offering anglers consistent action and rewarding catches.

As fall arrives, the fishing dynamics in Calcasieu Lake start to shift with the cooling temperatures. This transitional period often brings changes in fish behavior and migration patterns. Species like black drum and sheepshead become more prevalent as they move closer to the lake’s inshore areas. The cooler weather also provides a more comfortable fishing experience, with fewer crowds and a more relaxed atmosphere. Anglers may need to adjust their strategies to match the changing conditions, but fall remains a productive and enjoyable time for fishing.

In winter, inshore fishing in Calcasieu Lake offers a quieter, though still rewarding experience. The cooler temperatures can slow down some fish activity, but species like trout and various bottom fish remain active and can be targeted effectively. The winter months also bring a more peaceful environment, with fewer anglers on the water. This serene setting allows for a more focused and tranquil fishing experience. Overall, inshore fishing in Calcasieu Lake offers diverse opportunities across the seasons, ensuring that anglers can enjoy a satisfying and varied fishing experience throughout the year.

What techniques are popular for inshore fishing in Calcasieu Lake?

Inshore fishing in Calcasieu Lake, Louisiana, offers a variety of techniques tailored to its rich estuarine environment. One popular method is using live bait, such as shrimp, croaker, or menhaden. Anglers often employ rigs like the Carolina rig or a simple float setup to present the bait effectively near the lake’s structure. This approach is particularly effective for targeting species such as redfish, speckled trout, and flounder, which are attracted to the natural movement and scent of live bait in the lake's shallow and productive waters.

Another effective technique in Calcasieu Lake is casting with artificial lures. Soft plastics, jigs, and topwater plugs are commonly used to mimic the movement of small baitfish or invertebrates. Anglers might experiment with different retrieval speeds and styles—such as a steady retrieve, quick twitches, or an erratic jerking motion—to entice species like trout and redfish. The lake’s varied structure, including grass beds, oyster reefs, and submerged logs, provides ample opportunities to find what works best for the day’s conditions.

Bottom fishing is also a favored technique in Calcasieu Lake, particularly for targeting species that dwell near the lakebed. This involves using weighted rigs with baited hooks to attract bottom-dwelling fish like sheepshead and catfish. Anglers often use heavier tackle and sinkers to ensure the bait stays in place despite the current or underwater structure. Fishing around the lake’s natural features, such as deeper channels and submerged structures, can enhance the chances of a successful catch. Each of these techniques offers a unique way to explore the diverse fishing opportunities available in Calcasieu Lake, catering to different preferences and fishing conditions.

What species are popular for inshore fishing in Calcasieu Lake?

Inshore fishing in Calcasieu Lake provides anglers with a range of species that thrive in this dynamic estuarine environment. One of the primary targets is the speckled trout, or spotted seatrout. These fish are prized for their delicious, mild-flavored meat and spirited fight. In Calcasieu Lake, speckled trout are commonly found in the shallow waters and along the lake’s grassy flats and oyster reefs. Using live bait like shrimp or artificial lures that mimic baitfish can be very effective, especially during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning and late afternoon.

Another notable species in Calcasieu Lake is the red drum, or redfish. Redfish are well-known for their strong fighting abilities and distinctive coppery color with black spots on their tails. They can be found around the lake’s structures, including submerged vegetation and oyster beds. Baiting them with live shrimp, crabs, or cut bait, along with soft plastic lures, can lead to successful catches. Redfish are typically more active during low light conditions, making early mornings and late evenings the best times to target them.

Additionally, Calcasieu Lake offers opportunities to catch various species of flounder, including the southern flounder. Flounder are known for their excellent eating quality and are usually found on the sandy or muddy bottoms of the lake. Fishing for flounder involves using live bait like minnows or artificial jigs that mimic the movement of small fish. Their subtle bites can require a bit of patience, but the reward is a tasty catch. The diverse fishery in Calcasieu Lake makes inshore fishing here both enjoyable and rewarding, with plenty of opportunities for a successful day on the water.

Good guide, knows where the fish are, would have like to see tactical changes made for different species or when the bit slowed down. I’d like to see a variety in the arsenal you know. That’s just me being my hardcore fishing self. My wife loved it because we didn’t have to clean or fuel our boat. I agree it’s nice just being a paying customer. The hard thing for me and being very expirienced is you expect everyone to be like you. Tommy did us right and I appreciate his hard work. I’d use Tommy again and would recommend Tommy to others
