Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What are the most popular months to go nearshore fishing in Flagler Beach?

Nearshore fishing at Flagler Beach offers a rich and diverse experience for anglers throughout the year. Located on Florida's Atlantic coast, Flagler Beach is known for its productive waters and varied marine life. The nearshore zones are home to popular species such as redfish, sea trout, and flounder. Spring and early summer are prime times for fishing these species, as the warming waters bring them closer to shore, making them more accessible to anglers using live bait and artificial lures.

Summer at Flagler Beach is particularly exciting for nearshore fishing, with the warm waters attracting larger game fish like Spanish mackerel and tarpon. The abundance of baitfish and favorable weather conditions during this time make it ideal for trolling and casting in the nearshore areas. Anglers can take advantage of the increased fish activity around structures such as reefs and sandbars to land impressive catches. The summer months also see a rise in opportunities to catch other pelagic species, adding to the excitement of nearshore fishing in the area.

As fall and winter approach, fishing conditions at Flagler Beach shift, but opportunities remain plentiful. The cooler temperatures bring a change in species activity, with an increase in the presence of species like sheepshead and black drum. These fish are typically found around structures and in deeper waters as they seek out stable environments. Despite the cooler weather, the nearshore fishing remains productive, offering anglers a chance to adapt their techniques and enjoy a rewarding fishing experience throughout the year.

What techniques are popular for nearshore fishing in Flagler Beach?

Nearshore fishing in Flagler Beach offers anglers diverse techniques and opportunities due to its rich marine environment. One popular method is live bait fishing, which targets species such as flounder, redfish, and sea trout. Anglers often use live shrimp or mullet as bait and cast near structures like jetties, sandbars, or drop-offs where these fish are likely to be found. Techniques such as free-lining, where the bait drifts naturally with the current, or using a light sinker to keep the bait near the bottom, can be particularly effective in attracting these predatory fish.

Another common technique in Flagler Beach’s nearshore waters is artificial lure fishing. This method involves using lures such as soft plastics, jigs, or topwater plugs to mimic the movement of small baitfish. Anglers often cast lures along the edges of sandbars, near drop-offs, or over grass beds where fish are known to hunt. Varying the retrieval speed and depth of the lures can help match the activity level of the fish and increase the chances of a successful catch. This approach is particularly effective for targeting species like bluefish and jack crevalle, which are known for their aggressive feeding behavior.

Additionally, bottom fishing is a popular technique in Flagler Beach for targeting species like grouper, sea bass, and sheepshead. This method involves using weighted rigs to drop baited hooks to the ocean floor, where these bottom-dwelling fish are more likely to be feeding. Popular baits for bottom fishing include cut bait, squid, and live shrimp. Finding areas with natural or artificial structures, such as underwater reefs or wrecks, can enhance the chances of a productive fishing trip. Overall, Flagler Beach offers a range of nearshore fishing techniques to suit different preferences and target a variety of species.

What species are popular for nearshore fishing in Flagler Beach?

Nearshore fishing in Flagler Beach, located on Florida's Atlantic coast, offers a diverse range of fishing opportunities due to its rich marine environment. The nearshore waters, which extend from the shoreline to a few miles offshore, are home to a variety of fish species that provide exciting catches for anglers. Some popular species to target in this area include redfish, flounder, and spotted seatrout.

Redfish, also known as red drum, are a favorite among nearshore anglers in Flagler Beach. These fish are known for their fighting ability and delicious taste. They are commonly found around structures such as jetties, piers, and submerged reefs. Anglers often use live bait such as shrimp or small fish, or artificial lures that mimic baitfish to attract redfish. Fishing for redfish is best during the early morning or late afternoon, when they are most active.

Flounder are another sought-after species in nearshore waters. These flatfish are known for their distinctive shape and camouflage, making them somewhat challenging to spot. Flounder typically lie in wait on the sandy or muddy bottom, ambushing prey that comes too close. Using a method called "flounder gigging," where anglers use specialized spears to catch them at night, can be particularly effective. Additionally, drift fishing with live or artificial bait close to the bottom is a common technique.

Spotted seatrout, or speckled trout, are abundant in Flagler Beach’s nearshore waters and are known for their aggressive strikes and tasty fillets. They are often found in grassy areas, near drop-offs, or around structure such as docks and mangroves. Anglers typically use soft plastic lures or live bait like shrimp and small baitfish to entice spotted seatrout. Early morning and late evening are prime times for targeting these fish, as they tend to be more active during these cooler parts of the day.

With a huge storm the day before and winds still keeping most boats off the water we did very well. 12 fish total with 2 being sharks. One fish we caught was bit in half! Great day on the beach! Learned so many new skills as well and Kathy is too notch at sharing her techniques and working diligently to keep all three of us busey with four rods. You won't find that from a boat. Honestly with four poles soaking, most double rigs totaling 7-8 baits in the water at all times seems much more productive than one rod per angler getting snagged on a reef or baits getting stripped. Being an avid angler myself I'm very impressed with my first time surf fishing under post cold front conditions when many fish get finiky and tuff to commit to feed. Thank you Kathy!!! I'll be back!

We went out with Captain Chris and had an amazing experience! Our party consisted of four people with a grandmother and three teenage grandchildren. With Chris’ knowledge and skills, each of us were able to catch at least one shark. He prepared the one we kept and we were able to have it cooked at a nearby restaurant for lunch!
