trip description for Tarpon Trips in Sarasota

Head out for an awesome fishing adventure around Sarasota, FL with Captain Darius! Though he loves running further from shore to bottom fish the reefs for grouper, snapper, and pelagic species, the weather conditions have to be pretty stellar to allow this kind of trip. Thus, aboard his 23' Parker, he spends a lot of time hammering the inshore with his clients, and there are no shortage of fish (and big ones at that!) to catch! Lush grass flats abound in this area. These shallow grass flats are full of crabs, shrimp, and baitfish which in turn attract the game fish. Snook, Speckled Trout, and Redfish are the most sought after species, but you can also expect to hook into Spanish Mackerel, Jack Crevalle, Flounder, Bluefish, Ladyfish, and others! Fishing the shallow flats requires patience and attention to detail. Fish are spooky in water that is only a couple of feet deep. The beauty of Captain Darius' 23' Parker is that it has a shallow enough draft to get you good shots up on the flats and in the back bays and inlets, while also having enough room and stability to haul it further offshore on a nice day! All of Captain Darius' trips include ice, bottled water, tournament grade fishing gear, live bait, licenses, and fish cleaning at end of the trip. There is plenty of room in the cooler as well for your favorite snacks and drinks if you'd like to bring them along as well. Captain Darius' main pick-up location is on Siesta Key, but depending on where you are staying he can also meet up with you at Hart's Landing or Ken Thomspon Park Boat Ramp. Read More

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. One of the primary targets for inshore fishing at Longboat Key is the snook, known for its aggressive strikes and powerful runs. Snook frequent the shallow flats, mangrove edges, and deeper channels, particularly during the warmer months when they are most active. Anglers often use live baits such as pilchards or pinfish, as well as artificial lures like jerkbaits and topwater plugs, to entice these prized game fish. Redfish can be found in the same habitats as snook, including grass flats, oyster beds, and around docks and bridges. What are the most popular months to go inshore fishing in Longboat Key?

Inshore fishing seasons at Longboat Key, Florida, are influenced by the region's subtropical climate and the seasonal movements of various fish species. Spring marks the beginning of a bustling fishing season as water temperatures rise, triggering the spawning and feeding behaviors of many inshore favorites. These iconic game fish migrate along the coast in search of warmer waters and abundant baitfish schools, offering thrilling battles for anglers equipped with stout tackle and patience. Summer also presents opportunities for night fishing, when cooler temperatures and reduced boat traffic can improve catch rates for nocturnal feeders like snook and tarpon around illuminated structures.

Fall brings cooler temperatures and continued angling opportunities as redfish and speckled sea trout remain active in the shallows, preparing for winter. This season is ideal for targeting flounder as they migrate through channels and nearshore areas. Anglers often use live bait like mullet or mud minnows, as well as jigging with bucktail jigs or soft plastics along sandy bottoms and oyster reefs. Inshore fishing at Longboat Key provides year-round excitement, with each season offering unique challenges and rewards against the backdrop of Florida's picturesque coastal landscapes.

One popular method is flats fishing, where anglers quietly pole or drift over shallow grass flats and sandbars in pursuit of redfish, speckled sea trout, and snook. This technique often involves using live baits like shrimp or mullet, or casting artificial lures such as soft plastics and topwater plugs to entice strikes from these stealthy predators. Flats fishing requires keen observation and precise casting to target fish cruising in the clear, shallow waters of the estuary.

Another productive technique in Longboat Key is fishing around structure such as mangroves, docks, and bridges. These areas provide cover and feeding opportunities for larger game fish like snook and tarpon, which ambush passing baitfish. Anglers often use live baits such as pilchards or pinfish, or cast artificial lures like swimbaits and jerkbaits to attract strikes from these powerful predators. Fishing around structure demands careful presentation and the ability to maneuver baits close to cover where fish are likely to be lurking.

For those looking for a more relaxed approach, drift fishing along deeper channels and tidal creeks can yield catches of flounder, black drum, and sheepshead. Anglers typically use bottom rigs baited with shrimp, squid, or cut bait to target these bottom-dwelling species, adjusting their drift speed and depth to maximize their chances of hooking into fish.
