trip description for Backcountry Fire Up! in Sarasota

Sarasota Bay offers a vast array of angling options, including the mile long sand bar (appropriately named Long Bar) where you can sight cast to snook, redfish and trout. Endless deep grass flats like Jon Ringling Museum Flats, Long Boat Key Flats, or Marina Jacks Flats, offer a vast array of species such as Snook, redfish, seatrout, ladyfish, jack crevalle, flounder, bluefish, mackerel, pompano and more. Sarasota is the perfect family fishing experience. Sarasota Bay is fed by 3 passes - Big Pass, New Pass and Longboat Key Pass – and this allows migratory fish such as mackerel, pompano, bluefish to move easily into the bay during winter months. If fishing the inshore flats, we will be targeting the big three SW Fl gamefish snook, redfish, seatrout. We will be fishing in and around the many mangrove islands and sand bars of Sarasota Bay. This area is loaded with shallow grass flats, miles of mangrove lines, oyster bars and potholes, providing prime fishing grounds for this type of fishing. Just outside the passes near shore along Siesta Key, Casey Key, and Longboat Key, there’s Bonita, mackerel, king mackerel, Spanish mackerel and triple tail. Sarasota tarpon fishing off the beaches is tremendous when they migrate here in May, June and July. a little further offshore we fish reefs and wrecks for snapper, Cobia, barracuda, key west grunts, Sheepshead, sharks, snapper and more. trip description for Clearwater Flats Fishing in Clearwater

What’s the difference between a clearwater fishing guide & a charter captain? Anyone can go out and pass a test to get a Charter Captains' license. However, a guide is someone who truly knows how to fish in the area. From having the right equipment, boat, waterway knowledge to knowing what is biting on a summer's morn vs. a winter's eve and what bait to use in each scenario. Captain Craig is a true, ‘Clearwater Fishing Guide’. From shallow grass flats fishing to the bays, Captain Craig's flats fishing charters are among the best in the area. His flats charters include taking one to 3 persons to areas such as the grass flats, nearshore, backwaters, and bays along Clearwater and Tarpon Springs and even into Tampa Bay. These flats fishing experiences include casting with artificial or live bait along with traditional & fly fishing with no price disparity between any technique or quarry! Expect to catch snook, redfish, tarpon, mackerel, sharks, cobia, threadfin, & more! You will be fishing aboard Captain Craigs 21' Backcountry Flats boat equipped with a trolling motor and polling platform which allow Captain Craig to sneak you up on the fish to get the best possible look at catching them! This boat can maneuver the skinny water (hence the name of his charter) to chase down the awesome flats fish like tailing Reds, Snook, and even Tarpon! Captain Craig will provide almost everything for your flats fishing adventure from rods, reels, tackle, bait, fishing licenses, and even fish cleaning though he does encourage catch and release. All you'll need to bring are some snacks and drinks, your sun protection, and your own fly gear if that's your flavor, but Captain Craig will take care of the rest to ensure you have an epic day out on the water! Feel free to bring your young ones on this family-friendly trip; Captain Craig is great at getting kids hooked on fishing, and kids under 12 come aboard for free! Read More

Great time with Brooke. Showed us a lot of the area while we fished. Had to change days because of weather. That was no factor. Glad all fit in. He is very interested in teaching the youth to fish. He got stuck with 2 old farts that still had a good time m

Captain Nick tried his best but the fish just weren't biting. Nick was very nice and knowledgeable we just wish we caught more fish.

Andy G. with Nick H. of Clearwater, Florida

Did a nice job trying to get us on fish. Hustled his rear off. Seemed a bit overwhelming having 4 on the boat who had never fished the flats before and several being relative novices for just 1 crew member. As a result about 1/3 the time 1-2 of our party weren’t fishing as we could have been. He was working hard though … much appreciated! Would highly recommend a 2nd crew member when there are inexperienced people it will be a tight fit though but think it would improve the experience. Tyson was nice, polite, knowledgeable and very patient thanks for the experience. Would highly recommend especially if you’ve done this type of fishing before. Thanks Tyson!

Although it was a slow day of fishing Captain Robbie worked his butt off to find us some speckled trout to eat and lady fish for fun. I highly recommend Captain Robbie to anyone who wants a guide with local knowledge of the area and knows where the best fishing spots are!

We had Captain Brett for our day of fishing. What an amazing day we had. We caught multiple fish we could keep and multiple fish we couldn’t keep. We had the experience of seeing multiple species that we didn’t catch. We saw a bull shark, a Goliath Grouper, a loggerhead turtle, and a manatee. We hooked in to a giant. Watching Brett and my brother work together to get this fish in was spectacular. The team work that it took as well as the skill. He was also great for those of us that were less experienced. He was so pleasant and kind while helping me change my techniques so I caught fish verses continuously just feeding the fish. He did great with my teenage son. Brett is a great communicator. We will go with Brett again.

Had a great day fishing with Captain Nick Hughs! Trip started on time with nearly perfect weather. Boat was ready to go with all the bait and tackle we needed. Although the fish were hard to find, we did land a nice Snook. Nick worked his fanny off trying to get us on the fish. He’s a great Capt. and great host!

We had a great afternoon of fishing with Captain Wade in Tampa Bay; catching snook and redfish. Wade knows the bay well and he put us in the right spot for the conditions. We were originally scheduled for a Sunday morning trip but when the weather was not looking favorable, he offered to put in an extra long day and take us on Saturday afternoon. He works well with all skill levels and I highly recommend him for your next fishing trip!

Ben R. with Wade O. of Tampa, Florida

What a great Captain! Great boat! Easy going and just what we wanted! Can't say enough about a Captain that puts you on a 26 inch trout!! Can you say gator! Thanks for a great day!

Bill M. with Robert D. of Tarpon Springs, Florida

  • ★★★★★
We really enjoyed our trip with Capt. Robert. The boat was well maintained and the rods were smooth. He was a pleasure to spend the day with and I would have no hesitation to recommend him to anyone looking for a guide. He was friendly, helpful, patient and knowledgeable about the local area and the how's and where's to put fish in the boat. My wife caught her pb trout on this trip and I almost broke mine. He started as our Captain and finished as our friend. When we come back down, there is no need to look for another Capt., we already found the best.

Bill M. with Robert D. of Tarpon Springs, Florida

We slayed em. Had our limit in trout plus one pompano in an hour. Sport fished for the rest of the time and caught about 50 more large trout. Great trip!!!

Captain James was AWESOME! He was easy going, confident and a pleasure. One person in our party had never fished and Captain James was patient and instructional. He got us on fish immediately and we caught Jacks, Trout, Reds, and Snooks. I cannot recommend Captain James highly enough. I will definitely be using him in the future!

Captain Wade was great! We were a bit late getting to the dock due to downtown traffic and we still went out on the water and had a good time. We caught some trout and sheepshead and so many lady fish! He was very informative on techniques and areas to fish. He kept the ride smooth and it was just a beautiful day on the water. So much wildlife out there, dolphins, ducks, pelicans and much more! Thank you for a great day on the water!
