Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

This picturesque marina town is renowned for its diverse marine life and stunning ocean views. The area is a hotspot for both inshore and offshore fishing, with opportunities to catch a variety of species including sailfish, marlin, and tuna. The warm, crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean make it an ideal location for sport fishing, providing a thrilling adventure for those seeking both relaxation and excitement.

Inshore fishing around Puerto Aventuras is particularly rewarding. Anglers can expect to find a range of species such as snook, tarpon, and barracuda in the nearby mangroves and estuaries. These areas are rich with marine life and offer a more intimate fishing experience compared to the open sea. Local guides are often available to provide insights into the best spots and techniques, enhancing the overall experience for both novice and experienced fishermen.

For those venturing offshore, Puerto Aventuras is well-positioned to access some of the best deep-sea fishing grounds in the region. The warm waters just offshore are frequented by large pelagic species, making it a prime location for catching sailfish and marlin. Many charter services operate out of the marina, offering well-equipped boats and knowledgeable crews to help maximize your chances of a successful catch. Whether you're looking for a peaceful day on the water or an adrenaline-pumping fight with a big game fish, Puerto Aventuras has something to offer every angler.

What are the most popular months to go fishing in Puerto Aventuras?

Fishing in Puerto Aventuras is a year-round activity, but the best times to fish can vary depending on the species you're targeting. Generally, the peak season for big game fishing, including sailfish and marlin, spans from December to April. During these months, the waters are teeming with these prized catches, and the conditions are typically favorable for offshore adventures. The cooler water temperatures and favorable currents create an ideal environment for these pelagic species, making it a popular time for both locals and visiting anglers.

Inshore fishing in Puerto Aventuras follows a slightly different schedule. For species such as snook, tarpon, and barracuda, the fishing is excellent from late spring through early fall. This period, from May to September, corresponds with warmer water temperatures and increased fish activity in the mangroves and estuaries. These months are particularly good for targeting large tarpon, which are known for their powerful fights and acrobatic leaps, making them a favorite among sport fishermen.

The off-season, from October to November, can also offer good fishing opportunities, albeit with fewer crowds. While the chances of encountering some of the larger game fish may decrease, this period is ideal for a more tranquil fishing experience. Additionally, the transition between seasons can bring some interesting changes in fish behavior and patterns, offering a unique challenge for those looking to explore different fishing techniques. Overall, Puerto Aventuras provides diverse fishing experiences throughout the year, catering to various preferences and skill levels.

What types of fishing are popular in Puerto Aventuras?

Puerto Aventuras offers a diverse array of fishing opportunities, each with its own unique techniques and rewards. One of the most popular types of fishing here is offshore sport fishing, where anglers head out into the open sea to target big game species like sailfish, marlin, and tuna. Techniques such as trolling and live bait fishing are commonly used in these waters. Trolling involves dragging baited lures behind a moving boat, which entices predatory fish to strike. Live bait fishing, using fresh, live baitfish, is another effective method that can attract larger species due to the natural movement of the bait.

Inshore fishing around Puerto Aventuras provides a different but equally thrilling experience. Anglers can target species like snook, tarpon, and barracuda in the nearby mangroves and estuaries. Techniques such as casting with artificial lures, fly fishing, and using live bait are popular in these shallow waters. Casting with artificial lures, such as soft plastics or topwater plugs, can provoke aggressive strikes from these predatory fish. Fly fishing is another exciting option, especially for targeting tarpon, where anglers use specialized flies to mimic the fish’s natural prey.

Additionally, Puerto Aventuras is well-known for its bottom fishing opportunities, which involve fishing near the seabed for species such as grouper, snapper, and amberjack. This technique typically involves using heavier tackle and baited rigs to reach the deeper, structured areas where these fish are found. Bottom fishing can be done both inshore and offshore, depending on the depth and type of fish sought. The variety of fishing techniques available in Puerto Aventuras ensures that every angler can find a method that suits their preferences and skills.

Marlin, another sought-after species, can be found here year-round, with blue marlin being a notable catch. Tuna, including species like yellowfin and blackfin, also frequent the area, offering thrilling fights and excellent table fare.

Inshore fishing around Puerto Aventuras provides opportunities to catch a variety of exciting species as well. Snook, with their aggressive strikes and strong fights, are commonly found in the mangroves and estuaries. Tarpon, renowned for their aerial displays and challenging battles, are another highlight of inshore fishing, especially during the warmer months from May to September. Additionally, bottom fishing enthusiasts will find a range of species to pursue, such as grouper, snapper, and amberjack. These fish are typically found in deeper waters and are known for their robust fighting abilities. This was an absolutely amazing trip! The crew was very friendly and entertained all our questions. When we were done, they cleaned the fish, took it to the restaurant and suggested how to best have it prepared. I've never had such fresh fish before. I highly recommend anyone to book with Captain experiences!

Leonardo was fantastic with communication and letting us know the weather. While unfortunately the weather wasn’t good enough for the port to be guaranteed open during our trip, Leonardo did his best to get us out there as safely as possible for 3 different days. I can’t speak for the fishing, but for everything else Leonardo was a 11/10.

I’ve always wanted to catch a tarpon on the fly. It’s been on my bucket list for years, so when we planned our trip to Cancun, I look for an opportunity after booking the trip I was obviously excited to get the chance to fill one of the things on my bucket list, however, when I didn’t plan on, was getting very sick, just a few hours before Orlando, my guide was picking me up. As bad as I felt, I went and waited in the lobby for him to arrive. He had to go through a lot of trouble to get through security, but when I met him, he was all smiles. As we rode through the city to his boat I didn’t say a word, because I felt so ill, and after loading the boat and headed out under the water, it was only a matter of moments before he put me on fish, in my weakened state, I could barely throw the fly. However, he kept pointing out fish after fish, and after a few times resting, I finally filled that bucket list. Orlando was so patient with me and very generous. Not only was he an excellent guide he was a very, very good guy. I hope one day I can go back and fish with him again when I feel better Orlando worked very hard to get me on fish , and if I felt better, I’m sure I would’ve caught several more. We did catch more than that one but because I was so sick I laid in the bottom of the boat mostly. It wouldn’t have mattered if we didn’t catch fish I think I would’ve enjoyed spending the time on the water with Orlando. he genuinely wants you to catch fish. In my second state, he couldn’t tell how excited I was but I could sure tell how excited he was. Thanks again Orlando!! Tight lines!!!

The trip was amazing. They don’t lie when they say you don’t come in unless you catch a fish. I took my 8 year old. We trolled deep see for 5 hrs had 2 separate 100 to 150lb sailfish attacking the bait. Unfortunately no hook set but no worries. Travis and the guys took us closer inshore for an hour on the way back and my son reeled in 2 big triggerfish 2 yellow snapper a barracuda and an amberjack. So finishing stony with 6 fish and seeing the two sailfish chasing the bait was awesome. Not to mention your catching live bait pretty much the whole time.

I highly recommend Orlando. The communication before the trip was great and he went the extra miles (literally) to pick me and drop me off at my hotel so I didn't have to mess around with early morning taxi or Uber. Fishing was tough but we got some baby tarpon on fly and when conditions weren't suitable for fly rod we switches to spinning rod and caught more. Also got to see some remote backwater and the resident crocodiles. Made you think twice before putting hand in water to retrieve a snagged fly!

The trip itself with my guides was more than I could have hoped for. Not only were they extremely helpful, put us on fish, and instructed well, but they even took pictures for us, gave us a history of the Tulum Ruins and gave us a little snorkeling adventure with stingrays and sea turtles. This entire part was a 5/5 stars. The disappointing part 1/5 stars was the whole reason I booked through Capt. Experiences. According to the booking through this website the total trip was supposed to be $650. I paid "$97" through the website for a deposit. That came out to $130 on my credit card. When I showed up, I still had to pay the full "$650.00" in order to go on the trip, thinking that deposit was more of a holding fee like a deposit on a rental car. Nope, that was also added to the price, now I'm at $750 for this trip. The QR code that was supplied to me to pay the rest. The gentleman at the desk said he doesn't need that. I explained the deposit situation and he insisted his price was correct. Cool, way to vet the companies Capt. Experiences. Now for the Icing on the cake. When I went to the actual company webpage the same trip costs $550! So, you have guarantied that I will never use this service again and let others know of my experience of being ripped off, from a company that says they find the best which would include not getting ripped off. I get paying more as paying more, you're cost being $650, I was ok with that, even though $100 for your service was a bit steep, but hey, you guaranty the companies are vetted and only the best. That should be worth something. But, Oh wait, I still got ripped off. Never again. Total waste of time and money.

These guys are awesome! You wont find a more professional operation in Tulum. They picked us up from our hotel, made sure we were prepped with sunscreen and everything else we needed to get out there, and had water, soda, and beer on board in pre-stocked coolers for us. Each boat had a captain and a mate who worked hard together to put us on the fish, and between the 3 boats our group took out we caught a bunch of mahi and the biggest barracuda Ive ever seen. -Attison from Captain Experiences

Our group of four had a blast! We caught three large Mahi Mahi and the guys were nice enough to fillet them for us to take home. After fishing, we stopped for a snorkel break where we swam with sting rays and sea turtles. I recommend these guys to anyone looking for a quality, affordable fishing trip out of the heart of Tulum! I wish I had more time in Tulum to use them for other outings.
