Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What is inshore fishing in Lake Pontchartrain all about?

Inshore fishing in Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana, offers anglers a diverse and dynamic fishing experience within a unique inland sea environment. Spanning over 600 square miles, Lake Pontchartrain is known for its brackish waters that support a variety of saltwater and freshwater species. One of the primary targets for anglers is the speckled trout, prized for its tasty meat and spirited fights. These fish are abundant in the lake's shallower areas, particularly around submerged structure, tidal passes, and grassy flats. Anglers often use live shrimp, mullet, or artificial lures such as soft plastics and topwater plugs to entice strikes from speckled trout throughout the year.

Redfish are another sought-after species in Lake Pontchartrain, known for their robust fights and distinctive copper coloration. These fish thrive near marshy shorelines, oyster beds, and around pilings where they feed on crabs, shrimp, and small baitfish. Anglers typically target redfish using live baitfish or cut bait, as well as artificial lures like spoons and spinnerbaits. Redfish are active year-round, with peak seasons occurring during cooler months when they gather in schools to feed aggressively, providing anglers with exciting opportunities to hook into trophy-sized catches.

Flounder add another dimension to inshore fishing in Lake Pontchartrain, prized for their unique flat shape and stealthy feeding habits. These bottom-dwelling fish are commonly found near sandy bottoms, oyster reefs, and around submerged structure where they lie in wait to ambush passing prey. Anglers use live shrimp, mud minnows, or artificial lures like jig heads and soft plastics to target flounder, adjusting their techniques based on tidal movements and water clarity. Inshore fishing in Lake Pontchartrain offers anglers of all skill levels the chance to explore its expansive waters and enjoy the thrill of hooking into a variety of prized species amidst Louisiana's scenic coastal landscapes.

What are the most popular months to go inshore fishing in Lake Pontchartrain?

Inshore fishing seasons in Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana, are influenced by seasonal changes in water temperature, fish behavior, and spawning cycles, offering anglers diverse opportunities throughout the year. Spring marks the beginning of a vibrant fishing season as temperatures warm, triggering increased activity among species like speckled trout, redfish, and flounder. Anglers often find these fish in shallow flats, around marshy edges, and near submerged structures, using live bait such as shrimp, mullet, or artificial lures like soft plastics and topwater plugs to attract strikes. This season is particularly fruitful as fish become more active in preparation for spawning and feed aggressively after the cooler winter months.

Summer in Lake Pontchartrain brings warmer temperatures and longer days, influencing fish behavior and their preferred habitats. Speckled trout, for instance, thrive in the lake's clearer waters during this time, often congregating near deeper channels, tidal passes, and grass beds. Anglers may use drifting techniques with live bait or jigging with artificial lures to target these prized game fish, adjusting their strategies to match tidal movements and changing weather conditions. Summer also presents opportunities to target other species like redfish and sheepshead around marshy areas and submerged structures, offering anglers a diverse range of fishing experiences amidst the lake's expansive waters.

Fall in Lake Pontchartrain signals a transition period as temperatures cool and fish begin preparing for winter. Redfish and speckled trout remain popular targets during this season, with fish becoming more active as they feed voraciously before the onset of colder weather. Anglers continue to find success in shallow flats and along grassy shorelines using similar techniques as in spring, adapting their approaches to match the changing behavior of the fish. Fall fishing in Lake Pontchartrain offers anglers a mix of comfortable weather and abundant fish populations, making it an ideal time to enjoy the outdoors and reel in memorable catches against the backdrop of Louisiana's scenic coastal landscape.

What techniques are popular for inshore fishing in Lake Pontchartrain?

Inshore fishing in Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana, offers anglers a variety of effective techniques tailored to the lake's unique ecosystem and the behavior of its diverse fish species. One popular method is drifting or trolling with live bait, particularly effective for targeting speckled trout and other pelagic species that roam the lake's deeper channels and tidal passes. Anglers typically use live shrimp, mullet, or pogies (menhaden) rigged on a Carolina rig or under a popping cork to entice strikes. This approach allows anglers to cover large areas of water and adjust their depth and presentation based on fish activity and water conditions.

Another successful technique in Lake Pontchartrain is bottom fishing, ideal for targeting species like flounder, sheepshead, and redfish that inhabit sandy bottoms, oyster beds, and around submerged structures. Anglers use a variety of baits such as live shrimp, mud minnows, or cut bait (like mullet or menhaden) presented on a jig head or Carolina rig. This method involves casting near structure or drifting along the edges of drop-offs where these bottom-dwelling fish are likely to feed. Adjusting the weight of the rig and the depth of the bait allows anglers to effectively target different species throughout the lake's varied habitats.

Fly fishing also has a niche following in Lake Pontchartrain, particularly for targeting species like speckled trout and redfish in shallow waters and tidal creeks. Anglers wade quietly or fish from shallow-draft skiffs, using lightweight flies such as shrimp or crab patterns to mimic the natural prey of these fast-moving fish. Fly fishing in Lake Pontchartrain requires finesse, accuracy, and an understanding of tidal movements and fish behavior to effectively present flies and tempt strikes from these prized game fish. Whether drifting with live bait, bottom fishing, or fly fishing, Lake Pontchartrain provides anglers with diverse opportunities to explore its expansive waters and enjoy the thrill of hooking into prized catches amidst Louisiana's picturesque coastal landscapes.

We had a good day on the water with Mike! A weather front was moving through the area on our day to fish, so consequently the bite was inconsistent. We were able catch several fish, bringing in 8 fish to clean. The fish we caught were spotted trout and white trout. I was hoping to catch a sheep head and some red fish, but they were not biting that day. The highlight of the day was catching a small stingray. I’ve never seen one in the wild before so that was pretty neat. Of course we had to release him. I have been with many guides and Mike was very professional.

James is a true captain that has the fisherman in mind at all times. First he knows the area and is safe. He worked hard to get us on fish and we tried several areas before we were successful. He found the fish though and then we stayed to get some in the box. I have been on many fishing trips and James is at the top of my list. He is personable and cares about his clients. If your looking for a quality experienced Captain look no farther than James.

He put us on fish all day and worked hard to make sure we always had what we needed- he even shared his ball cap with me when he realized I had forgotten mine. I can not say enough good things about him, great fisherman and a great guy!!!
