Get ready for one of the greatest thrills in all of Freshwater Fly Fishing, Behemoth Carp on the fly! And it isn't widely known as the pinnacle of Freshwater Flying fishing for no reason, hooking into these freshwater monsters is no easy feat. Catching a carp on the fly is ridiculously hard at first, which is why your guides love them, and they would love it even more if they could help you get on one yourself! When you go out with one of the guides to chase these feisty specimens you can expect to spend your day wading around lakes and river systems stalking your quarry stealthy and precisely. These fish are very aware of their surroundings, and you get no second chances. It’s either a perfect cast and presentation or the fish spooks, and often, the latter. When they do eat, however, you’re can bet your bottom dollar they're going to take you out to the backing! In the Fall and Winter months, you can also target smallmouth buffalo on the fly, which grow even larger than carp, and are actually indigenous to Texas waters. Teaching trips are also welcomed for folks that have never held a fly rod. If this trip is more in line with your skill level, you can expect it to be more centered around the fundamentals, rather than finding and catching a fish, but it won't be too long before your out to the backing on a giant carp as well! What is sunfish fishing in Austin all about?

In Austin, Texas, sunfish are a prevalent and popular catch among anglers of all ages and skill levels. These freshwater fish, also known as bream or perch, inhabit the many lakes, rivers, and ponds that dot the Austin landscape. Sunfish are known for their vibrant colors, feisty fighting spirit, and willingness to take a variety of baits, making them a favorite target for recreational anglers looking for a fun day on the water.

One of the most popular locations for sunfish fishing in Austin is the renowned Lady Bird Lake, which winds its way through the heart of the city. Anglers can be seen casting from the banks or drifting in kayaks and canoes, targeting sunfish along the shallow edges and near submerged vegetation. Sunfish can also be found in abundance in nearby reservoirs such as Lake Travis and Lake Austin, where they provide excellent opportunities for anglers to hone their skills and enjoy the tranquility of nature.

Anglers targeting sunfish in Austin typically use light tackle and a variety of baits, including worms, crickets, small minnows, and artificial lures such as jigs and spinners. Sunfish are opportunistic feeders and will readily strike at almost anything that resembles food, making them an ideal species for anglers of all experience levels to target. Whether fishing from the shore, a boat, or a kayak, anglers in Austin can enjoy the simple pleasure of catching sunfish while basking in the beauty of the city's natural surroundings.

What are the most popular months to fish for sunfish fishing in Austin?

In Austin, Texas, the seasons play a significant role in the behavior and availability of sunfish for anglers. Generally, sunfish can be caught year-round in Austin's lakes, rivers, and ponds. However, certain seasons offer more favorable conditions for successful fishing. During the warmer months of spring and summer, sunfish are typically more active and abundant, as they spawn and feed more actively in the warmer waters. This period, from late spring through early fall, often provides the best opportunities for anglers to target sunfish in Austin.

In the spring, as temperatures rise and daylight hours increase, sunfish become more active in preparation for the spawning season. Anglers can find sunfish congregating in shallower waters near the shoreline, where they build nests and protect their eggs. This time of year presents excellent opportunities for anglers to catch sunfish as they aggressively defend their nests and feed voraciously to replenish energy reserves. As summer progresses, sunfish may move to deeper waters or seek refuge in shaded areas to escape the heat, but they remain readily available to anglers willing to adapt their tactics.

In the fall, as temperatures begin to cool and daylight hours shorten, sunfish activity may decrease compared to the peak of summer. However, as water temperatures gradually decrease, sunfish become more active again, providing another window of opportunity for anglers to target them. The fall season, particularly in the early to mid-fall months, can offer excellent fishing for sunfish as they feed voraciously to prepare for the approaching winter months. Anglers in Austin can capitalize on these seasonal patterns to enjoy consistent and rewarding sunfish fishing throughout the year.

What techniques are popular for catching sunfish in Austin?

Sunfish fishing in Austin, Texas, can be a rewarding experience with the right techniques and tactics. One effective technique for catching sunfish is using ultralight or light spinning tackle paired with small hooks and light line. Anglers often employ a simple bobber rig, with a small piece of worm or cricket as bait, to entice sunfish into striking. By casting near shoreline vegetation, submerged structures, or along the edges of weed beds, anglers can target areas where sunfish are likely to congregate.

Another popular technique for sunfish fishing in Austin is fly fishing. Using lightweight fly rods and small, brightly colored flies, anglers can present a more natural-looking offering to sunfish. Fly fishing allows anglers to target sunfish in shallow water and tight spaces where traditional casting may be challenging. By matching the hatch and presenting flies that mimic the insects and small prey items that sunfish feed on, anglers can effectively entice strikes from these voracious feeders.

Additionally, anglers can employ a variety of artificial lures to catch sunfish in Austin's waters. Small spinners, jigs, and soft plastics in natural colors or bright hues can all be effective in enticing strikes from sunfish. Anglers can experiment with different retrieves, speeds, and depths to determine what triggers a response from the sunfish on any given day. Whether fishing from the shore, a kayak, or a boat, anglers in Austin can enjoy the simplicity and excitement of sunfish fishing using a variety of techniques tailored to their preferences and the conditions of the day.

What other species are popular in Austin?

In addition to sunfish, Austin, Texas, offers a diverse range of fish species for anglers to target, ensuring there's something for everyone to enjoy on the water. One popular catch among anglers is the largemouth bass, renowned for its aggressive strikes and challenging fights. Austin's numerous lakes, rivers, and reservoirs provide ideal habitat for largemouth bass, making them a prime target year-round. Whether casting topwater lures along the shoreline or flipping jigs into submerged cover, anglers can relish the thrill of hooking into these prized game fish.

Another sought-after species in Austin's waters is the catfish, known for its hearty appetite and widespread distribution. Catfish can be found in virtually all of Austin's water bodies, from small ponds to large reservoirs. Anglers targeting catfish often use a variety of baits, including stinkbaits, cut bait, and live bait such as worms or shrimp, presented on the bottom using simple rigs. Whether fishing from the shore, a boat, or a kayak, anglers can enjoy the excitement of reeling in catfish while soaking in the serene beauty of Austin's natural surroundings.

Furthermore, Austin boasts an abundance of other species to pursue, including crappie, striped bass, white bass, and carp, among others. These diverse opportunities cater to anglers of all preferences and experience levels, ensuring there's always something new to discover on the water. Recent Reviews of Captain Experiences

  • ★★★★★
We had a great experience with Captain Kevin. He has a great rig, great personality and put us on enough Large Mouth to please me. I took my 10 year old son because he said he wanted to catch a large mouth. Kevin came through with an extra life jacket too (I forgot one for my son). One hiccup was we were going to meet at different lake but they closed it due to the horrible drought we are in. Kevin audibled and we meet at Lake Bastrop which was more convenient for me anyway. I would definitely recommend this easy to use app and would definitely hire Captain Kevin again. He had everything we needed and got us catching fish quickly. He is really good with kids too!

My experience was wonderful with Captain Kevin! He texted a couple days before the trip to ask if we could head out earlier than our scheduled time due to the heat and go try to beat the weekend rush of recreational boaters. So I met him at the boat ramp, which was very easy to find, at 6:15 and we headed out. The first place we fished was where we caught the biggest fish, pictured below, in the first 20 minutes of fishing. Things were a little slow the rest of the day, but we caught probably around a dozen fish, targeting and catching a variety of different species. . Captain Kevin was extremely friendly, and knows more about fishing than just about anybody I’ve met. He knew I’m a beginner, and was very kind and patient in teaching me and explaining everything to me. We swapped stories, got to know each other, and had the most wonderful time. I would highly recommend fishing with Captain Kevin.
