Teal Behavior and Hunting Tips

Teal are among the smallest and most agile ducks, known for their quick, erratic flight patterns. Blue-winged teal, the most common during the early season, tend to migrate in large groups and favor shallow water habitats like marshes, ponds, and flooded fields.

  • Scout Early and Often: Scouting is critical to successful teal hunting. These birds can change locations quickly, especially in response to weather patterns. Look for shallow wetlands with abundant vegetation where teal can find food like seeds, aquatic plants, and insects.
  • Use Decoys Wisely: A small spread of decoys—typically a dozen or less—works best for teal. Focus on realism and ensure that your decoys are set up in small, scattered groups to mimic relaxed feeding behavior. Spinning-wing decoys can also be highly effective for attracting teal, as their movement catches the birds' attention from a distance.
  • Camouflage and Concealment: Teal have excellent eyesight and will flare off if they spot anything unusual. Blend into your surroundings by using natural cover, and wear camouflage that matches the environment. Low-profile blinds, layouts, or natural cover like tall grass and cattails can keep you hidden.
  • Light Calling: Teal are not the most vocal ducks, so use calls sparingly. A few soft quacks and whistles are usually sufficient to bring birds in close. Avoid over-calling, as teal tend to respond better to subtle sounds.
  • Quick Reflexes and Shot Placement: Teal are fast and unpredictable flyers. Practice shooting ahead of the season to improve your reaction time and accuracy. Use a light 12 or 20-gauge shotgun with a modified or improved cylinder choke to maximize your chances of hitting these small targets.

Gear Recommendations for Teal Hunting

  • Shotgun and Ammo: A 12 or 20-gauge shotgun is ideal for teal hunting. Since teal are smaller birds, lighter loads like 2 ¾” shells with shot sizes ranging from #4 to #6 work well. Remember, non-toxic shot is mandatory.
  • Waders and Boots: Teal often frequent shallow waters and muddy environments. Durable, waterproof waders and boots will keep you comfortable and mobile in wet conditions.
  • Camouflage Clothing: Choose camo patterns that blend well with your hunting environment, whether that’s grassy marshlands or open fields. Lightweight, breathable clothing is best for early-season hunts when temperatures are still warm.
  • Teal Calls and Decoys: Invest in a quality teal call and a small spread of teal-specific decoys. A spinning-wing decoy can make your setup more attractive, especially on calm days when motion on the water is minimal.
