Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What is fishing in Florida City all about?

Fishing in Florida City, Florida, offers a diverse range of opportunities due to its prime location near both freshwater and saltwater environments. Situated at the southern tip of the Florida Peninsula, Florida City provides easy access to the Everglades National Park and the waters of Biscayne Bay. The nearby Everglades offer unique freshwater fishing experiences, where anglers can target species such as bass, bluegill, and crappie in the park’s extensive network of canals and ponds. This setting provides a scenic and serene backdrop for those seeking a more tranquil fishing experience.

Saltwater fishing is also a major draw in Florida City, with Biscayne Bay offering excellent opportunities for targeting a variety of marine species. The bay is known for its abundant populations of snook, redfish, and tarpon, making it a popular spot for both inshore and offshore fishing. Anglers can enjoy fishing from the shore, piers, or by boat, with options for fly fishing, bait fishing, and trolling. The clear, warm waters of Biscayne Bay provide favorable conditions for catching a range of saltwater species throughout the year.

Additionally, the proximity to the Florida Keys enhances Florida City’s appeal for anglers looking to explore further afield. A short drive from Florida City can lead to some of the best fishing grounds in the Keys, where opportunities for targeting species like grouper, mahi-mahi, and marlin abound. What are the most popular months to go fishing in Florida City?

Fishing in Florida City, Florida, is a year-round activity thanks to its favorable climate and diverse aquatic environments. In the Everglades and other freshwater areas, spring and fall are particularly productive. During these seasons, species like bass, bluegill, and crappie are active and feeding, making it an ideal time to fish in the park’s extensive canal systems and ponds. Spring sees the bass moving into shallower waters for spawning, while fall provides excellent conditions as fish feed heavily in preparation for the cooler months.

In Biscayne Bay, which offers prime saltwater fishing opportunities, the seasons also impact the fishing experience. Spring and summer are prime times for targeting species like snook, redfish, and tarpon. The warmer waters encourage these species to be more active, and anglers can take advantage of the excellent conditions for inshore fishing. Summer is especially popular for tarpon fishing, as these large fish migrate through the bay. The warmer months also see an influx of pelagic species like mahi-mahi, making offshore fishing particularly rewarding.

During the winter months, fishing in Florida City remains productive, though the focus may shift. In the Everglades, cooler temperatures can slow down some freshwater species, but bass fishing can still be good with the right techniques. In Biscayne Bay, winter can be a great time for targeting species like snook and redfish, as they are often found in shallower waters and are more concentrated. Overall, Florida City's mild climate ensures that fishing is enjoyable throughout the year, with each season offering its own unique opportunities for different types of fishing.

What types of fishing are popular in Florida City?

Fishing in Florida City, Florida, provides a range of opportunities across both freshwater and saltwater environments, each requiring different techniques to maximize success. In the freshwater areas of the Everglades National Park, anglers often use techniques such as bass fishing with soft plastics, spinnerbaits, or crankbaits. These methods work well in the park’s extensive canal systems and ponds, especially when targeting largemouth bass. For crappie and bluegill, small jigs and live bait, such as worms or minnows, are effective. Anglers may also use fly fishing techniques in the park’s calmer waters for a more challenging and enjoyable experience.

In the saltwater realm of Biscayne Bay, a variety of techniques can be employed depending on the target species. For snook, redfish, and tarpon, anglers often use live bait like shrimp or baitfish, as well as artificial lures such as soft plastics and jerkbaits. These species are typically found around structures like mangroves and submerged rocks. Fly fishing is also popular in the bay, particularly for snook and tarpon, where precise casting and the use of streamers or surface flies can be highly effective. Trolling and drifting with live bait or lures can also yield success, especially when targeting larger pelagic species.

Offshore fishing near Florida City involves different techniques tailored to the diverse marine life of the region. For species like mahi-mahi and tuna, trolling with a variety of lures or live bait is common. Deep-sea fishing can also include bottom fishing techniques to target species like grouper and snapper. In these deeper waters, heavy tackle and specialized rigs are used to handle the larger and often stronger fish. Overall, Florida City's mix of freshwater and saltwater fishing offers a broad spectrum of techniques, allowing anglers to choose methods that best suit their target species and preferred fishing style.

I highly recommend Anthony if you want to fish out of Key Largo. He was obviously respected by the other guides we met while we were fishing and demonstrated a great knowledge of the local water and the best places to find different species of fish. Additionally, he had excellent equipment that was in very good shape. This includes his boat. Even more important was his willingness to conduct the type of trip I wanted for my grandchildren's first fishing trip. He is also extremely affable and fun to be with. If I go back to the Keys, I won't look for a different guide. I will just call Anthony and ask, "What's biting?".
