Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Working with experienced fishing guides who know the best local spots and techniques can dramatically increase your odds of a great day. Having someone who is on the water every day and knows the area like the back of their hand is going to give you the best chances of success.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

Even if you’ve got a great setup already in your home waters, booking a guide also provides a great opportunity to experience new techniques, new locations, or even a chance at a new target species to knock off the bucket list.

What is fishing in Kendall all about?

Fishing in Kendall offers a unique blend of urban and natural experiences, thanks to its location just a short drive from Miami. The area's proximity to Biscayne Bay provides anglers with a variety of fishing opportunities, from shore fishing along local parks to boat fishing in the bay itself. The waters around Kendall are home to a diverse range of species, including snook, tarpon, and snapper, making it an appealing spot for both novice and experienced fishermen.

For those looking to fish closer to home, the local lakes and canals in Kendall are worth exploring. These freshwater bodies often feature species like bass and bluegill, offering a more tranquil fishing experience compared to the bustling bay. Many of the lakes are stocked regularly, which helps ensure a good catch and provides a family-friendly setting for a day out.

Kendall's growing fishing community also means there are plenty of resources available for enthusiasts. Local bait shops and fishing guides can provide valuable information and supplies to enhance your fishing trips. Whether you're planning a quick weekend outing or a more serious fishing expedition, Kendall's accessible location and diverse fishing options make it a convenient and enjoyable destination for anglers.

What are the most popular months to go fishing in Kendall?

Fishing seasons in Kendall are influenced by its subtropical climate, which allows for year-round fishing opportunities. The warm temperatures of the region mean that many species are active throughout the year, but certain times are better for specific types of fishing. For example, the cooler months from November to March are excellent for targeting species like snook and tarpon, as these fish are more active and feeding more aggressively in the slightly cooler waters.

During the summer months, from June to September, Kendall’s waters can become quite warm, which might affect fishing patterns. However, this is also the prime time for catching species like mangrove snapper and various types of grouper. Anglers often need to adapt their techniques, focusing on deeper waters or seeking out cooler spots where fish are more likely to be found. This season is also popular for offshore fishing trips, as the warm waters attract a range of pelagic species.

Fall and spring offer transitional periods with varied fishing conditions. In the fall, the waters begin to cool down, making it a great time to catch a variety of species as they prepare for the winter. Spring brings warmer temperatures and increased activity, especially for inshore species like redfish and trout. Overall, while Kendall provides great fishing throughout the year, each season offers unique opportunities and challenges, allowing anglers to enjoy a diverse range of experiences.

What types of fishing are popular in Kendall?

In Kendall, anglers can explore a variety of fishing types and techniques, thanks to the area's diverse water bodies and rich ecosystem. Shore fishing is a popular choice, especially around local parks and canals. Techniques such as casting with live bait or lures can be effective for species like bass and bluegill. Using a spinning reel is common in these settings, allowing for precise casting and a good chance of landing fish that are close to the shoreline.

For those who prefer a boat fishing experience, the nearby Biscayne Bay offers excellent opportunities for both inshore and offshore fishing. Inshore fishing often targets species like snook, tarpon, and snapper. Techniques like drift fishing with live bait or using artificial lures can yield impressive results. Offshore fishing trips can be particularly rewarding, with anglers using techniques such as trolling or deep-sea fishing to catch larger pelagic species like sailfish and mahi-mahi.

Fly fishing is another technique gaining popularity in Kendall, especially in the clearer waters of Biscayne Bay. This method can be highly effective for targeting species such as bonefish and permit. Fly fishing requires a bit more skill and practice, focusing on the art of casting lightweight flies to mimic natural prey. Overall, Kendall's diverse fishing options ensure that there's a technique and target for every type of angler, whether you're a local resident or visiting the area.

What species are popular for fishing in Kendall?

Fishing in Kendall offers a range of species that cater to different angling preferences. In the freshwater lakes and canals around the area, you can expect to find species like Largemouth Bass and Bluegill. These freshwater fish are popular among local anglers due to their accessibility and the fun challenge they provide. Largemouth Bass, in particular, are known for their fighting spirit, making them a favorite for sport fishing. Bluegill, while smaller, can be caught in abundance and are great for a relaxing day on the water.

When venturing into Biscayne Bay, the fishing opportunities expand significantly. The bay's waters are home to a variety of inshore species including Snook, Tarpon, and Snapper. Snook are known for their aggressive strikes and can be targeted using live bait or artificial lures. Tarpon, often referred to as "silver kings," provide a thrilling challenge due to their powerful leaps and strong runs. Snapper, on the other hand, are abundant and can be caught using both bait and lures, making them a reliable target for a successful fishing trip.

For those who head offshore, the fishing experience becomes even more diverse. Species like Mahi-Mahi, Sailfish, and Grouper are common catches. Mahi-Mahi, also known as Dorado, are prized for their vibrant colors and delicious taste. Sailfish, with their impressive sails and speed, offer an exciting catch for sport fishermen. Grouper, found in deeper waters, are sought after for their size and the challenge they present. Overall, Kendall's diverse fishing environment ensures that there are opportunities for catching a wide range of species throughout the year.

What are the best places to fish in Kendall?

Kendall offers several great spots for fishing enthusiasts, each providing a unique experience. One of the best places to start is at the local parks with fishing piers, such as Black Point Park. This park provides access to Biscayne Bay, where you can fish from the pier or launch a boat. The area is known for its diverse marine life, including snook, snapper, and even the occasional tarpon. The park's amenities, including clean facilities and ample parking, make it a convenient choice for a day out fishing.

Another excellent location is the nearby Kendall-Tamiami Canal. This freshwater canal is well-stocked with Largemouth Bass and Bluegill, offering a more tranquil fishing experience away from the bustling bay. The canal's banks are accessible for shore fishing, and many anglers appreciate the peaceful setting and the opportunity to catch quality bass. The canal is also a popular spot for families looking to enjoy a day of fishing without venturing far from the city.

For a more adventurous fishing experience, consider exploring the waters of Biscayne Bay. This large expanse offers a variety of fishing options, from inshore to offshore. The bay's shallow waters are ideal for targeting species like snook and tarpon, while deeper areas provide opportunities for catching larger fish such as mahi-mahi and grouper. Several local charter services operate in this area, offering guided fishing trips that can enhance your experience and increase your chances of a successful catch. Overall, Kendall's diverse fishing spots cater to different preferences and skill levels, making it a prime destination for anglers.

I've been out on charters many, many times mostly down the east coast but also in Cabo. I must say the trip out with captain Manny is one of the two best trips out I've ever experienced. Her out is on fish, Jordan (the mate) ensured the rods and basis were correct and ready to catch fish. This was just a half day trip but next trip I'm going full day. Wow, I highly recommend Captain Manny!!!!! The catch highlights have to include the 54" barracuda and a 7' shark (it took two of us tag teaming and over 30 minutes to bring the shark alongside the boat for measurement.
