Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What is jetty fishing in New Smyrna Beach all about?

Jetty fishing in New Smyrna Beach provides anglers with an excellent opportunity to explore the rich fishing grounds along Florida's Atlantic coast. The jetties at Ponce de Leon Inlet, commonly known as Ponce Inlet, are a focal point for fishing enthusiasts due to their strategic location where the Halifax River meets the Atlantic Ocean. These rock structures extend into the ocean, creating an ideal habitat for a variety of fish species. Anglers can expect to target species such as redfish, snook, flounder, sheepshead, and Spanish mackerel, among others, depending on the season and conditions.

One of the highlights of jetty fishing in New Smyrna Beach is the chance to catch snook, a prized sportfish known for their strong fights and acrobatic leaps. Snook are often found near the jetties, particularly during their seasonal migrations in spring and fall. Anglers typically use live bait such as mullet, pinfish, or shrimp, as well as artificial lures like plugs and jigs, to entice these elusive predators into striking. The challenge of hooking into a large snook amidst the currents and waves adds an element of excitement to any fishing trip.

Another popular target for jetty fishermen in New Smyrna Beach is the redfish, or red drum. These bronze-colored fish are commonly found around the rocky structures of the jetties, where they feed on crustaceans and small fish. Redfish provide a thrilling challenge for anglers, who often use live or cut bait such as mullet, crabs, or shrimp to entice them into biting. The proximity of the jetties to deeper water channels and the Atlantic Ocean ensures a steady flow of fish throughout the year, making New Smyrna Beach a favored destination for anglers seeking diverse fishing opportunities along Florida's coast.

What are the most popular months to go jetty fishing in New Smyrna Beach?

Jetty fishing in New Smyrna Beach offers anglers distinct seasons throughout the year, each with its own set of fish species and optimal fishing conditions. In the spring, as temperatures begin to warm, jetty fishing becomes increasingly active. This season marks the return of species like snook, Spanish mackerel, and pompano to the coastal waters near the jetties. Snook, in particular, are prized for their aggressive strikes and acrobatic leaps, making them a thrilling catch for anglers using live bait or artificial lures like plugs and jigs. Spanish mackerel and pompano provide additional excitement with their fast-paced fishing action and are often targeted using small spoons or jigs.

Summer is peak season for jetty fishing in New Smyrna Beach, as warm waters attract a diverse array of fish species close to shore. Redfish, known for their powerful runs and bronze scales, become more active around the jetties, where they feed on crabs and shrimp. Tarpon also make their presence known, offering anglers an exhilarating challenge with their impressive size and strength. Mangrove snapper and sheepshead are other popular targets during the summer months, providing both a fun fishing experience and a delicious reward for anglers casting near the rocky structures.

As fall approaches and temperatures begin to cool, jetty fishing on New Smyrna Beach remains productive. This season sees the return of species like snook and redfish, which continue to be active around the jetties as they prepare for winter. Spanish mackerel may still be present in the early fall, providing anglers with additional opportunities for fast-paced fishing action. Cooler waters also attract species like flounder and black drum, which are commonly caught near the jetties using live or cut bait. Overall, each season at New Smyrna Beach offers unique fishing opportunities, ensuring that anglers can enjoy a rewarding and memorable experience throughout the year.

What techniques are popular for jetty fishing in New Smyrna Beach?

Jetty fishing in New Smyrna Beach encompasses a variety of effective techniques tailored to the diverse fish species inhabiting the area. One popular method is bottom fishing, which involves using weighted rigs to keep bait near the ocean floor, close to the rocky structures of the jetties. This technique is particularly effective for targeting species such as redfish, sheepshead, and black drum, which are often found foraging around the rocks. Anglers typically use live shrimp, crabs, or cut bait to entice these bottom-dwelling fish, adjusting their rigs to match the tidal movements and currents for optimal results.

Another successful technique at New Smyrna Beach's jetties is casting with artificial lures. This method is ideal for targeting fast-moving and predatory species like Spanish mackerel, bluefish, and pompano. Anglers employ a variety of lures, such as spoons, jigs, and plugs, to mimic the movements of baitfish or shrimp, enticing strikes from these aggressive feeders. Varying the retrieve speed and depth allows anglers to adapt to changing conditions around the jetties, maximizing their chances of hooking into a prized catch.

For those preferring a more relaxed approach, float fishing is a popular choice at New Smyrna Beach's jetties. This technique involves suspending bait at a specific depth using a float or bobber, allowing anglers to target species like mangrove snapper, sheepshead, and even tarpon. Live shrimp, pilchards, or small jigs are commonly used as bait, providing versatility and simplicity in fishing the clear waters around the jetties. Whether you're bottom fishing, casting with lures, or float fishing, New Smyrna Beach's jetties offer a range of techniques to cater to different fishing styles and preferences, ensuring an enjoyable and fruitful fishing experience for anglers of all skill levels.

I have many ways I could explain this trip I was unable to go so I sent my 218-year-old sons with their buddies and they had the time of their life. They couldn’t say enough about Captain Aaron. He made them feel right at home even after two of them puked. Plenty of fish were caught and plenty of memories made specially for two seniors 100% be going back to captain Aaron. But next time I’m going see you soon.

Aaron was amazing! Very family friendly and it was my daughters first time even holding a fishing pole and she enjoyed every minute of it. We chose the inshore fishing and the other kids had a great a time also. My son caught a shark, it was cold when we went out (I didn’t check the weather before hand) but we were very comfortable on the boat and he was very accommodating with the weather. I highly, highly recommend Aaron for your fishing trip.

With a huge storm the day before and winds still keeping most boats off the water we did very well. 12 fish total with 2 being sharks. One fish we caught was bit in half! Great day on the beach! Learned so many new skills as well and Kathy is too notch at sharing her techniques and working diligently to keep all three of us busey with four rods. You won't find that from a boat. Honestly with four poles soaking, most double rigs totaling 7-8 baits in the water at all times seems much more productive than one rod per angler getting snagged on a reef or baits getting stripped. Being an avid angler myself I'm very impressed with my first time surf fishing under post cold front conditions when many fish get finiky and tuff to commit to feed. Thank you Kathy!!! I'll be back!
