trip description for Offshore Fishing in Jacksonville

Fishing the offshore waters of North East Florida can be world class. Lots of options depending on the time of year and water temps. We usually break it down into two categories trolling and bottom fishing. Trolling we prefer using live bait and 30 lb. conventional tackle. Targeting king mackerel, cobia, bonita, barracuda, sailfish, mahi and sometimes even blackfin tuna. This all depends on conditions and the time of year we fish. Usually we start the day by throwing a cast net for live bait or stopping on a piece of structure to jig up some minnows using a sabibki rig. Once the baitwells are loaded its off to the fishing grounds. All depending on where the bite has been best is where we start to fish. Sometimes it can be a few miles out and other days we need to run 10-12 miles offshore. Bottom fishing can be wide open off of our coast as well targeting red snapper, vermillion snapper, black seabass, amberjack, grey grouper, cobia and triggerfish just to name a handful. The live bait can work very well on the bottom as well fresh cut bait and frozen bait. Until you have felt the fight of a mule snapper or a big amberjack it's hard to express in words how hard they pull. We use heavy conventional tackle (80lb.) as well as big spinning rods for the fishing these waters. Read More

Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Working with experienced fishing guides who know the best local spots and techniques can dramatically increase your odds of a great day. Having someone who is on the water every day and knows the area like the back of their hand is going to give you the best chances of success.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

Ponte Vedra Beach Fishing Overview

Ponte Vedra Beach is located on both banks of the St Johns River which empties into the Atlantic 20 miles from downtown. Fishing in Ponte Vedra Beach is incredibly productive with more than 1110 miles of interior shoreline, the St. Johns River, and easy access to offshore waters. With convenient water access everywhere you turn, Ponte Vedra Beach has plenty of options to cast a line no matter what type of fishing you choose.

Ponte Vedra Beach Freshwater Fishing

As you head further up the St. Johns River it changes to brackish and then freshwater. This is where you can expect to find bass, crappie, and catfish with great success. With Lake George and Crescent Lake both in close proximity to Ponte Vedra Beach, there are ample freshwater fishing opportunities. Lake George is well known for its largemouth bass but it’s the striped bass fishing that makes it stand out. With endless fishing spots and a variety of species to catch, Ponte Vedra Beach is a great place to take a freshwater fishing trip.

Ponte Vedra Beach Inshore Fishing

Starting from the Intracoastal off of Timucuan and Fort George Island, you'll have plenty of spots to explore while targeting inshore species. The inshore fishing opportunities in Ponte Vedra Beach are incredible with easy access to marshes, flats, and jetties while targeting amazing gamefish. Numerous inshore species reside here including trout, redfish, Spanish mackerel, sheepshead, black drum, jacks, tarpon, snook, and flounder. While most of these species are abundant throughout the year, each species has a peak season either when they feed on a seasonal food source or the giants come in to spawn.

Starting with cool water temperatures, the largest black drum are caught in the spring when they pour into the inlets. The warmer summer water bring on the flounder, tarpon, and mackerel bite with redfish and trout hitting hardest in the fall. Sheepshead move in during the winter months where they form tight groups near structure making them easier to target.

Whether you want to target one species or just relax and catch a mixed bag, you can do it with an inshore fishing trip to Ponte Vedra Beach.

Ponte Vedra Beach Offshore Fishing

Offshore fishing out of Ponte Vedra Beach provides plenty of opportunities to catch a wide variety of prized sportfish. Take a short boat ride to open water and you will have a decision to make. Troll for kingfish, cobia, marlin, sailfish, and mahi-mahi, or deep drop for snapper and grouper species over structure. In addition, the area is home to the biggest wahoo tournament in the world, the Northeast Florida Wahoo Shootout.

A normal trolling assortment of rods and outriggers is preferred for kingfish, cobia, and mahi-mahi but in Florida, they kite fish for monsters. This unique approach of attaching a trolling line to a kite that flys behind the boat is used to catch tuna, billfish, and wahoo.

With offshore fishing in Ponte Vedra Beach being so productive it’s a tough decision to make. Contact Captain Experiences to book a charter and get in on the action next February/March.

Other Things to Do in Ponte Vedra Beach

Ponte Vedra Beach is close to Jacksonville which is the largest city in Florida so it’s safe to say there is no shortage of things to do. A trip to the ocean isn’t complete without spending some time on the beach and there are plenty. Three of the most popular beaches include Mayport Beach, Neptune Beach, and Atlantic Beach, all of which have beautiful white sand. If sightseeing is more your speed then head out and see Fort George or experience exotic animals at The Catty Shack Wildlife Sanctuary. With a seemingly endless list of bars and restaurants to choose from, Ponte Vedra Beach is sure to please.

Our family had a great time with Captain Scott! His first mate Jimmy was so enthusiastic and really wanted to help us all catch big fish. My young adult kids rated the experience an 11 out of 10. Overall we caught 4 King Mackerals (and a few sharks that we threw back). Scott recommended a local restaurant (The Salty Pelican) that would prepare our catch, so we enjoyed a delicious lunch after our morning on the boat.

I set up a fishing trip with Captain Mike as part of my buddies bachelor party and could not have asked for a better experience. Capt. Mike was extremely professional and was an excellent guide. He personally reached out to me a few days before our scheduled departure to check in and see if I had any questions and give me more details. The morning of the trip Captain Mike had everything set up and waiting for us when we arrived to the dock. I was very impressed with how organized he was. The Captain wasted no time getting us on fish and the entire group started reeling them in one after the other. At the conclusion of the trip Captain Mike cleaned all of the fish we caught and bagged up the filets for us to take home. I would highly recommend Captain Mike to everyone. My buddies and I had a great time!

Captain Don is truly a 5 star fishing guide. He's a better guy. I've been fishing for over 50 years, and as I hoped, Captain Don showed me several ticks and trips I'd never seen. No matter your experience level, he has something to help. We had a great day on the water, and had a great conversation. Darn fish just kept bugging us though.

Dan D. with Don T. of Jacksonville, Florida

We had a great time with captain frank. Due to the storms that rolled in weeks prior to our trip and a nor' easter, we had to make due with the areas we had available to fish. The booking process was very easy and we enjoyed our time on the water.

  • ★★★★★
Best fishing day ever! We told Captain Troy we were serious about getting "keeper" fish to eat, and he did not disappoint. A full 12-hour trip into the Atlantic got us 46 delicious keepers (variety of snapper species, Jacks, Cobia, trigger fish, and more) with plenty of non-stop action, thanks to Troy's laser-focus on the fish. He provided good coaching on the best methods to drop our lines and haul up the bounty. He kept the boat on top of fish continuously, and had us haul up our lines as the boat drifted off so he could reposition the boat back over the fish. We literally spent no time at all just hanging out waiting for bites in an empty ocean. He knows some good spots; for the most part we were the only boat on the water as far as the eye could see; we only noticed a couple of other boats wander over toward us in one location. Action also included fighting with one or two giant groupers (line snapped off before we could get them to the boat) and a couple of small sharks. It got exciting when we had to quickly haul in a snapper to save it from the jaws of an impressive 6-foot hammerhead. Overall an exciting, successful, exhausting day on the water from sunup to sundown. Enjoyed grilled Cobia and Jack kabobs for dinner that evening.

Mary Lee F. with Troy J. of St. Augustine, Florida
