trip description for 3 Person Duck Hunt in South Padre Island

This is a three person half day private bay duck hunting trip near South Padre Island, Texas. The Lower Laguna Madre has some of the finest duck hunting in the United States when conditions are right. Hunting along the edges of the fronts is absolutely the most ideal time to plan a trip. Multiple species move through this bay system on their way South. Large concentrations of redheads and pintails winter here. Other species that migrate through the South Padre area are widgeon, teal, shovelers, scaup, and others. Clients can bring their own retriever if discussed beforehand with the guide. Typically, hunt over decoy spreads consisting of at least 75 decoys. Season starts in November and goes out for two weeks after Thanksgiving Sunday. Starts again on Second Saturday in December and typically goes to last Sunday in January. Guides prefer to duck hunt in the afternoon and will provide a seasoned retriever. This is a fun activity and most clients return to go again. These are not easy hunts and do require some labor. We work with a couple of seasoned taxidermists that can also mount the trophy bird if any clients are interested at a reasonable price. Read More

What is flats fishing in South Bay all about?

Flats fishing in South Bay provides anglers with a distinct and rewarding experience in the diverse ecosystem of this southern California locale. Situated near San Diego, South Bay encompasses a network of shallow, brackish waters that are home to a variety of saltwater species. This region is particularly known for its abundant populations of Halibut, Bonefish, and Spotted Bay Bass, among others. The expansive flats and channels of South Bay offer ample opportunities for anglers to explore and target these prized game fish.

One of the appeals of flats fishing in South Bay lies in its accessibility and proximity to urban areas, making it a convenient destination for both locals and visitors alike. Anglers often utilize light tackle and specialized techniques like sight casting to spot fish cruising along the shallow flats. This method requires patience and skill as anglers carefully present their baits or lures to entice bites from wary fish. The clear, shallow waters of South Bay enhance the visual aspect of fishing, allowing anglers to witness the thrilling moment when a fish strikes.

Aside from the excitement of catching fish, flats fishing in South Bay offers a chance to immerse oneself in the coastal beauty and tranquility of southern California. Whether drifting along the channels or wading through the shallows, anglers can enjoy panoramic views of San Diego's skyline and the surrounding coastal landscape. This serene environment provides a peaceful escape where anglers can connect with nature while pursuing their passion for fishing. Whether fishing solo or with a guide, exploring the flats of South Bay promises memorable experiences and the potential for exciting catches.

What are the most popular months to go flats fishing in South Bay?

Flats fishing in South Bay, known for its expansive shallow waters and diverse marine life, presents anglers with distinct seasonal opportunities throughout the year. Springtime, typically from March to May, marks the beginning of a vibrant fishing season in South Bay. As the water temperatures rise and daylight hours increase, species like Bonefish, Permit, and Tarpon become more active in these shallows. Anglers often find success using light tackle and sight-fishing techniques, taking advantage of clear waters and favorable weather conditions. It's a prime time for both experienced anglers seeking trophy catches and novices eager to experience the thrill of stalking elusive game fish in South Bay's picturesque flats.

Summer in South Bay, spanning from June through August, brings warmer waters and a shift in fishing dynamics. The shallow flats remain productive, but early mornings and late evenings offer the best chances for success as temperatures soar. This season sees an abundance of baitfish and crustaceans, attracting species like Snook and Redfish to these feeding grounds. Patience and adaptability are key traits for anglers navigating the summer flats, where strategic casting and keen observation often lead to rewarding catches. Despite the heat, the serene beauty of South Bay's waters and the excitement of hooking into hard-fighting fish make summer flats fishing a cherished pursuit for enthusiasts.

As autumn arrives in South Bay, from September to November, anglers witness a transition in fish behavior and seasonal patterns. Cooler temperatures and occasional cold fronts prompt changes in fish movements and feeding habits. Redfish and Snook remain prevalent targets in the shallows, with the added allure of migrating species such as Pompano and Spanish Mackerel passing through on their seasonal journeys. Fall flats fishing combines the thrill of challenging conditions with the potential for rewarding catches, making it a favored time for dedicated anglers looking to capitalize on seasonal migrations and the natural rhythms of South Bay's aquatic ecosystem.

What techniques are popular for flats fishing in South Bay?

Flats fishing in South Bay, often associated with areas like South Florida or other coastal regions, provides anglers with a thrilling opportunity to target a variety of species in shallow, clear waters. One of the primary targets for flats fishing enthusiasts in South Bay is the Bonefish, renowned for its speed and elusive nature. Anglers typically sight-fish for Bonefish using techniques such as presenting small flies or shrimp patterns with delicate casts. Key areas to target include sandy flats, grassy shorelines, and shallow channels where Bonefish cruise in search of crustaceans and small baitfish. Understanding tidal movements and fishing during periods of higher water flow can increase chances of success, as Bonefish are more active during these times.

Another prized species for flats fishing in South Bay is the Permit, known for its powerful fights and selective feeding habits. Anglers often target Permit using techniques such as sight-casting with crab or shrimp imitations, presented with precise casts near mangroves, flats edges, or wrecks where Permit are known to forage. Patience and persistence are key when targeting Permit, as they can be wary and challenging to hook. Early mornings and late afternoons are typically prime times for Permit fishing, as they tend to feed actively during these cooler periods. Adjusting leader sizes and using fluorocarbon to minimize visibility can also enhance the chances of enticing strikes from these prized sport fish.

For anglers seeking a more versatile and challenging flats fishing experience in South Bay, targeting Tarpon can provide exhilarating opportunities. Tarpon are known for their acrobatic leaps and powerful runs, making them a favorite among sport fishermen. Anglers often use techniques such as sight-casting with live mullet or artificial lures like swimbaits and jigs, targeting channels, deep cuts, or flats edges where Tarpon congregate to feed on baitfish. Understanding their migration patterns and fishing during peak seasons, such as spring and summer when Tarpon move into shallower waters to spawn, can significantly increase the likelihood of landing a trophy Tarpon. Flats fishing in South Bay offers anglers of all skill levels a thrilling and immersive experience amidst the stunning coastal landscapes and diverse marine life of the region.

What species are popular for flats fishing in South Bay?

One of the primary targets for flats fishing enthusiasts in South Bay is the bonefish. Known for their elusive nature and blistering runs, bonefish are prized for their challenging fights and acrobatic displays when hooked. These silver ghosts of the flats can be found cruising the sandy bottoms and seagrass beds, particularly during incoming tides when they feed actively. Anglers often use stealthy approaches and present small live baits like shrimp or crabs, as well as artificial lures like bonefish jigs or flies tied to mimic crustaceans, to entice bonefish. They provide thrilling action and are highly valued for their sporty nature and the skill required to successfully land them.

Another popular species to pursue while flats fishing in South Bay is the permit. These powerful and intelligent fish are known for their challenging fights and keen eyesight. Permit can be found on the flats, particularly around sandy patches, grassy edges, and near structure such as wrecks or rocky outcrops where they feed on crabs and shrimp. Anglers commonly use live crabs, shrimp, or small baitfish, as well as artificial flies or jigs resembling their natural prey, to target permit effectively. They provide exciting battles and are highly prized for their size, strength, and the thrill they offer anglers when sight-fishing in the crystal-clear waters of South Bay.

In addition to bonefish and permit, anglers flats fishing in South Bay may also encounter species such as tarpon, redfish, and snook. Tarpon, known for their aerial acrobatics and powerful runs, are prized targets for anglers using live bait such as mullet or artificial lures like swimming plugs or flies. Redfish, often found in shallow waters near oyster beds and mangrove shorelines, provide thrilling fights and are commonly targeted using live or cut baitfish, as well as soft plastic lures or spoons. Snook, with their ambush-style feeding behavior, are commonly found near mangrove edges, docks, and shallow flats, offering anglers opportunities for sight-fishing using live baitfish or artificial lures like jerkbaits and surface plugs. South Bay's diverse flats fishery and pristine waters make it an ideal destination for anglers seeking both the challenge of sight-fishing and the thrill of catching various inshore species.

Capt Tommy and Capt Jason took us on an excellent fishing adventure. Inspite of Mother nature tossing in challenging Bay conditions. The team took us in a variety of waters that we could fish. We had lots of hook ups with Redfish and Black Drum. The trip was worth every minute. We created core memories. Thank you gentlemen. We hope to see you again soon.
