Is booking a hunting guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a hunting guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What is fishing in Somerville all about?

Fishing in Somerville, Texas, centers around Lake Somerville, a well-known spot for both recreational and serious anglers. The lake is home to a diverse range of fish species, including largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and white bass. Its reputation for good fishing makes it a popular destination for locals and visitors alike. Anglers often enjoy the peaceful surroundings and the chance to catch sizable fish, whether fishing from the shore, a boat, or one of the many fishing piers around the lake.

The best times for fishing in Somerville vary by species. For example, the spring season is ideal for white bass, especially during their spawning run when they are more active and easier to catch. Largemouth bass fishing can be good year-round, but it peaks in the spring and fall when the water temperatures are moderate, and the fish are more active. The lake also offers excellent opportunities for crappie fishing, particularly around submerged brush piles and other structures where crappie tend to congregate. Catfish are another popular target, with many anglers finding success using stink bait, cut bait, or live bait.

Aside from the fish, Lake Somerville provides a scenic backdrop for a day on the water. Surrounded by rolling hills and lush greenery, the lake is part of a larger park system that includes hiking trails, campgrounds, and picnic areas. This makes it an ideal location for a weekend getaway where you can enjoy not only fishing but also other outdoor activities. Whether you're a seasoned angler or just looking for a relaxing day outdoors, fishing in Somerville offers something for everyone.

What are the most popular months to go fishing in Somerville?

Fishing seasons in Somerville, Texas, vary throughout the year, with different species becoming more active depending on the water temperature and weather conditions. Spring is one of the most popular times for fishing in Somerville, especially for white bass. During the spring spawning run, white bass move into shallower waters, making them easier to catch. Anglers often flock to the lake during this time, using jigs, minnows, and small crankbaits to reel in these fish. Largemouth bass are also more active in the spring, particularly in the early morning or late afternoon when the water is cooler.

Summer fishing in Somerville can be a bit challenging due to the heat, but it still offers plenty of opportunities for those willing to adjust their strategies. As the water warms up, fish often move to deeper, cooler areas of the lake. Catfish become a popular target in the summer months, as they tend to be more active in warmer waters. Anglers frequently use stink bait, cut bait, or live bait to catch catfish in the deeper parts of the lake or near submerged structures. Early morning and late evening are typically the best times to fish during the summer to avoid the midday heat.

Fall brings another excellent season for fishing in Somerville, with cooling water temperatures that stimulate fish activity. This season is particularly good for largemouth bass and crappie, which become more active as they prepare for winter. The fall months often see less fishing pressure than spring or summer, providing a more peaceful experience on the lake. Winter fishing can also be rewarding, especially for catfish and crappie, which remain active in cooler waters. Anglers who brave the colder temperatures can often enjoy good catches with less competition on the water. Each season in Somerville offers unique fishing opportunities, making it a great year-round destination for anglers.

What types of fishing are popular in Somerville?

Fishing in Somerville, Texas, offers a range of types and techniques that cater to different preferences and skill levels. One of the most common techniques is **bank fishing**, which is perfect for those who prefer to fish from the shore. Lake Somerville has several public access points, including parks and fishing piers, where anglers can cast their lines without needing a boat. For bank fishing, live bait such as worms and minnows is popular for catching catfish and crappie, while artificial lures like jigs and crankbaits work well for targeting bass. This technique is especially popular with families and beginners due to its simplicity and accessibility.

**Boat fishing** is another popular option in Somerville, offering greater mobility and access to different parts of the lake. Many anglers use boats to reach deeper waters, especially during the summer months when fish tend to move away from the warmer, shallower areas. For those targeting largemouth bass, techniques such as **casting with soft plastic baits** or **spinnerbaits** around submerged structures like fallen trees and brush piles are effective. Additionally, trolling with crankbaits or spoons is a common method for catching white bass, particularly during their spring run when they are schooling and moving around the lake in search of food.

For anglers who enjoy a more relaxed approach, **still fishing** is a great technique, especially for targeting species like catfish. This involves anchoring the boat or setting up on the bank and waiting for the fish to come to the bait. Using a rod holder and baits like chicken liver, stink bait, or cut bait can be particularly effective for catching catfish, which are known for their strong sense of smell. Still fishing is also a popular choice at night when catfish are more active, providing a peaceful and often productive fishing experience. Whether you prefer active techniques like casting and trolling or more passive approaches like still fishing, Somerville offers diverse fishing opportunities to suit all styles.

What species are popular for fishing in Somerville?

When fishing in Somerville, Texas, there are several species that anglers can target, each offering a unique challenge and experience. **Largemouth bass** is one of the most sought-after species in Lake Somerville. Known for their aggressive strikes and powerful fights, largemouth bass can be caught throughout the year, though they are particularly active in the spring and fall. Anglers often use a variety of lures, such as spinnerbaits, soft plastics, and crankbaits, to entice these fish, focusing on areas with ample cover like submerged brush piles and rocky outcrops.

Another popular species to target in Somerville is **white bass**, especially during their spring spawning run. White bass, also known as sand bass, are known for their schooling behavior, which can lead to exciting, fast-paced fishing action. They are typically found in open water but move to shallower areas during the spawning season. Anglers often have success using small jigs, spinners, and live minnows to catch white bass, and the best time to target them is in the early spring when they are most active and abundant.

**Catfish** are a favorite among many anglers in Somerville, providing a different kind of fishing experience. The lake is home to several catfish species, including channel catfish, blue catfish, and flathead catfish. These bottom-dwelling fish are known for their strong sense of smell, which makes them highly responsive to baits like chicken liver, stink bait, and cut bait. Catfishing can be done year-round, but it tends to be particularly good in the summer months when the water is warm. Catfish are often found in deeper parts of the lake or around underwater structures, and they can provide a thrilling fight, especially when using heavier tackle. Whether you're targeting bass, white bass, or catfish, Somerville offers a range of fishing opportunities for anglers of all preferences.

What are the best places to fish in Somerville?

Some of the best places to fish in Somerville, Texas, are found around Lake Somerville, which is well-known for its diverse fishing spots that cater to anglers of all types. **Lake Somerville State Park** is a popular destination for those looking to fish from the shore. The park is divided into two main units: Birch Creek and Nails Creek. Both units offer ample shoreline access, fishing piers, and areas with submerged brush and structures that attract various fish species. Anglers can catch largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie from the shore or pier, making it a great spot for those without a boat.

For anglers with boats, the **Rocky Creek Park** is another excellent location on Lake Somerville. This area offers a boat ramp and access to some deeper waters where fish often congregate, especially during the warmer months. The waters around Rocky Creek are known for being productive spots for catching white bass, especially during their spring spawning run. Additionally, the park provides access to coves and other sheltered areas that are ideal for fishing for largemouth bass and crappie. The diverse underwater landscape, including submerged brush piles and drop-offs, provides perfect hiding spots for these species.

If you’re looking for a more secluded and serene fishing experience, **Yegua Creek** is a fantastic option. Located on the western side of Lake Somerville, this creek feeds into the lake and is known for its excellent crappie and catfish fishing. Yegua Creek is particularly popular in the spring when crappie move into the creek to spawn, providing excellent fishing opportunities. This area is less crowded than some of the more developed parts of the lake, making it a great choice for those who prefer a quieter fishing trip. Whether fishing from the bank or wading into the creek, Yegua Creek offers a peaceful and productive fishing environment in Somerville.

My buddy and I had an awesome time fishing with Kevin and Lee. This was our first time carp fishing and it didn't disappoint. These guys run a great program from setting up a nice camp (with fresh coffee) to cannonball launching multiple rods with their cornmeal balls that carp love. We had numerous bites on a quick trip and landed a giant! Kevin and Lee were first class handling the fish and got some great shots for us. – Jonathan with Captain Experiences

I HIGHLY recommend Captain Andy for his excellent guiding skills and can-do attitude. Unlike many other Guides, he works with a network of other spotters who watch for birds all across the state. He left his home at midnight and arrived at our shooting location at 1 AM to make sure other eager hunters wouldn't grab his spot. The result was an excellent hunt of mixed bag ducks, sprinkled with humor and education about wingspotting. Five stars is not enough for this Coast Guard certified gent.
