Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. What is fishing in Lacombe all about?

Fishing in Lacombe, Louisiana, offers a unique blend of coastal and inland fishing experiences, thanks to its location near Lake Pontchartrain and the rich marshlands of southern Louisiana. The area is well-known for its diverse fish populations, including speckled trout, redfish, and flounder, which thrive in the brackish waters where freshwater meets saltwater. Anglers in Lacombe often find success fishing from the banks, piers, or small boats, especially during the early morning or late evening when fish are most active.

One of the highlights of fishing in Lacombe is the access to the surrounding marshes and bayous, which are teeming with life. These areas provide excellent opportunities for targeting redfish, particularly during the fall when they gather in large schools. Kayak fishing is popular in these shallow waters, allowing anglers to navigate the narrow channels and get up close to the action. The combination of beautiful scenery and productive fishing makes the marshes around Lacombe a favorite spot for both locals and visitors.

Lake Pontchartrain, located just a short distance from Lacombe, is another prime fishing location. This massive estuary is famous for its speckled trout and redfish, as well as seasonal runs of other species like sheepshead and black drum. Fishing from the piers along the lake’s shores is a popular activity, offering easy access and the chance to catch a variety of fish. Whether you’re casting from the shore or heading out on a boat, the waters around Lacombe provide a diverse and rewarding fishing experience that reflects the rich natural heritage of southern Louisiana.

What are the most popular months to go fishing in Lacombe?

Fishing in Lacombe, Louisiana, is a year-round activity, with each season offering its own unique opportunities. Spring is particularly exciting, as the warmer temperatures bring a surge of activity in the waters around Lake Pontchartrain and the surrounding marshes. This is an excellent time to target speckled trout and redfish, which become more active as the water temperatures rise. The spring months also see the arrival of flounder, making it a prime season for anglers who enjoy targeting multiple species in a single trip.

Summer in Lacombe can be hot, but it’s still a productive time for fishing, especially in the early morning and late evening hours when fish are most active. Speckled trout remain a popular target, often found in the deeper, cooler waters of Lake Pontchartrain. Redfish are also abundant, particularly in the marshes, where they can be found cruising the shallow waters in search of food. Summer is also a great time to explore night fishing, as many species continue feeding after dark, providing an exciting and cooler alternative to daytime fishing.

As fall arrives, the fishing in Lacombe hits another peak, with the cooler temperatures bringing fish back to the shallower waters. Redfish and speckled trout are especially active during this time, preparing for the winter months ahead. The fall is also known for the bull redfish run, where large schools of these powerful fish move into the area, offering anglers a thrilling challenge. The combination of pleasant weather and active fish makes fall one of the best seasons for fishing in Lacombe, drawing both locals and visitors to the area’s waters.

What types of fishing are popular in Lacombe?

Fishing in Lacombe, Louisiana, is characterized by a variety of techniques that cater to the diverse waters of the region. One of the most popular methods is inshore fishing, particularly for speckled trout and redfish. This type of fishing is commonly done from boats in the shallow waters of the marshes and bayous, where anglers can quietly approach their targets. Kayak fishing is also popular in these areas, allowing for easy access to the narrow channels and flats where fish often congregate.

Another technique commonly used in Lacombe is pier fishing, especially along the shores of Lake Pontchartrain. Fly fishing is also growing in popularity in the Lacombe area, especially in the marshes where redfish are a prime target. The shallow, clear waters provide an excellent environment for sight fishing, where anglers can spot fish before casting their flies. This technique requires skill and precision, as the goal is to imitate the natural movement of the fish’s prey. Fly fishing in Lacombe offers a unique and rewarding challenge, particularly for those who enjoy the art and patience involved in the sport. Whether you’re a seasoned fly fisherman or a beginner looking to try something new, the marshes around Lacombe offer a beautiful backdrop for this technique.

Redfish, or red drum, are another key species to target in Lacombe. These fish are commonly found in the shallow waters of the marshes and bayous, where they feed on crabs, shrimp, and small fish. Redfish are known for their strength and are a thrilling catch, especially during the fall when large schools, known as bull reds, move into the area. We had a good day on the water with Mike! A weather front was moving through the area on our day to fish, so consequently the bite was inconsistent. We were able catch several fish, bringing in 8 fish to clean. The fish we caught were spotted trout and white trout. I was hoping to catch a sheep head and some red fish, but they were not biting that day. The highlight of the day was catching a small stingray. I’ve never seen one in the wild before so that was pretty neat. Of course we had to release him. I have been with many guides and Mike was very professional.

James is a true captain that has the fisherman in mind at all times. First he knows the area and is safe. He worked hard to get us on fish and we tried several areas before we were successful. He found the fish though and then we stayed to get some in the box. I have been on many fishing trips and James is at the top of my list. He is personable and cares about his clients. If your looking for a quality experienced Captain look no farther than James.
