Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What is fishing in Belle Glade all about?

Belle Glade, situated on the southeastern shore of Lake Okeechobee in Florida, is a prime location for fishing enthusiasts. The town's proximity to one of the largest freshwater lakes in the United States provides ample opportunities for anglers to catch a variety of fish species. Lake Okeechobee is renowned for its Largemouth Bass fishing, attracting both recreational and professional anglers. The lake's vast expanse and diverse habitats, from open waters to grassy areas, offer an ideal environment for bass to thrive.

In addition to Largemouth Bass, Lake Okeechobee is home to other popular fish species such as Bluegill, Crappie, and Catfish. The rich and diverse ecosystem supports a healthy fish population, ensuring a rewarding fishing experience year-round. Belle Glade's numerous boat ramps and marinas make it easy for anglers to access prime fishing spots on the lake. For those without a boat, there are plenty of shore fishing opportunities as well.

Belle Glade's community is closely connected to the fishing culture, with local bait and tackle shops providing essential gear and expert advice. Additionally, guided fishing tours are available for those looking to enhance their experience with local knowledge and expertise. Whether you're a seasoned angler or a beginner looking to cast your first line, Belle Glade offers a welcoming and productive environment for all types of fishing enthusiasts.

What are the most popular months to go fishing in Belle Glade?

Fishing seasons in Belle Glade are influenced by the natural rhythms of Lake Okeechobee, which provide year-round opportunities for anglers. During the spring months, typically from March to May, fishing for Largemouth Bass peaks as the fish move into the shallows to spawn. This is an ideal time for anglers to target trophy-sized bass, using various techniques like flipping and pitching around the abundant vegetation.

Summer, from June to August, brings warmer water temperatures, which can push bass into deeper, cooler waters. Early morning and late evening are the best times to fish during these hotter months, as fish are more active during these cooler periods of the day. Along with bass, Bluegill and Crappie fishing can be very productive during summer, especially around the lake's numerous structures and drop-offs.

As fall arrives, from September to November, the cooler weather brings bass back into the shallows, making it another prime time for bass fishing. The fall season also sees an increase in Crappie activity, as they move towards shallower waters. Winter months, from December to February, offer excellent opportunities for catching Catfish, as well as continued success with bass and Crappie. The stable climate of Belle Glade ensures that fishing remains a viable and enjoyable activity throughout the year, with each season bringing its own unique opportunities and challenges.

What types of fishing are popular in Belle Glade?

Fishing in Belle Glade, centered around the expansive Lake Okeechobee, offers a variety of fishing types and techniques suited for different species and preferences. One of the most popular types is freshwater bass fishing, particularly targeting Largemouth Bass. Anglers often use techniques such as flipping and pitching, especially around the lake’s abundant vegetation and structures. These methods involve short, precise casts to cover and lure bass out of their hiding spots, making them effective in the dense aquatic environment of Lake Okeechobee.

For those interested in panfish, techniques like ultralight spinning and fly fishing are commonly used to catch Bluegill and Crappie. Light tackle and small baits or flies can be very effective, especially during the spawning seasons when these fish are more active in shallow waters. Crappie jigs and small live baits like minnows are popular choices for targeting Crappie around submerged structures and brush piles.

Catfishing is another popular pursuit in Belle Glade, with anglers employing methods such as bottom fishing and drift fishing. Using strong, durable tackle, anglers often bait their hooks with cut bait, chicken livers, or commercial stink baits to attract Catfish. Bottom fishing involves casting baited hooks into deep areas where Catfish are known to reside, while drift fishing allows the bait to move with the current, covering more area and increasing the chances of a catch. Each of these techniques provides a unique and engaging fishing experience, catering to the diverse aquatic life of Lake Okeechobee.

What species are popular for fishing in Belle Glade?

Fishing in Belle Glade, especially in the renowned Lake Okeechobee, offers a diverse array of fish species to target, catering to anglers of all preferences. The most famous and sought-after species is the Largemouth Bass. Known for their size and fighting spirit, these bass are a top choice for both recreational and professional anglers. The best time to catch Largemouth Bass is during the spring and fall when they move into shallower waters to spawn and feed. Techniques like flipping and pitching around vegetation and structures are particularly effective for landing these prized fish.

Another popular species in Lake Okeechobee is the Crappie. These panfish are abundant and provide a fun challenge, especially during their peak seasons in the cooler months. Crappie fishing is often best around submerged structures, brush piles, and drop-offs where they tend to congregate. Anglers typically use small jigs or live minnows to entice Crappie, and light tackle is preferred to enhance the experience of catching these feisty fish.

Bluegill and Catfish are also prominent species in Belle Glade's waters. Bluegill are a great target for family fishing trips due to their abundance and willingness to bite on simple baits like worms or small flies. They are commonly found in shallow waters and around weed beds. Catfish, on the other hand, are often sought after using bottom fishing techniques with baits like cut bait or chicken livers. These fish provide a hearty fight and are excellent for those looking to catch a larger, more challenging fish. With such a variety of species available, Belle Glade offers a rich and rewarding fishing experience for anglers of all skill levels.

What are the best places to fish in Belle Glade?

Belle Glade, with its proximity to Lake Okeechobee, offers several prime fishing spots that attract anglers from all over. One of the best places to fish is the south end of Lake Okeechobee itself, particularly around the area near the Herbert Hoover Dike. This location provides access to both deep and shallow waters, making it ideal for targeting a variety of species such as Largemouth Bass, Crappie, and Bluegill. The extensive aquatic vegetation here, including hydrilla and lily pads, creates perfect habitats for these fish, allowing anglers to employ various techniques like flipping and pitching.

Another excellent fishing spot in Belle Glade is the canals and waterways that feed into Lake Okeechobee. These canals, such as the Rim Canal and Miami Canal, are known for their healthy populations of Catfish and bass. Fishing in these canals can be highly productive, especially during the cooler months when fish migrate to these areas seeking warmer water and abundant food sources. Anglers often find success using bottom fishing techniques for Catfish and light tackle for bass and panfish in these narrow, sheltered waters.

Additionally, the Belle Glade Marina and the surrounding areas offer convenient access to some of the best fishing spots on the lake. The marina provides boat ramps, docks, and fishing piers, making it easy for both boaters and shore anglers to get started. From here, you can quickly reach productive fishing areas without having to travel far. Whether you prefer fishing from a boat or casting from the shore, the marina area is well-equipped to accommodate all types of anglers, providing an excellent base for a successful day of fishing in Belle Glade.

Captain Experiences - I discussed my trip (with Captain Janot) with Jake from Captain Experiences on Sunday 07/28/24. My Egyptian Goose and Iguana hunt with Captain Janot: Pros: Janot was a nice, pleasant guy with a clean boat, who gave me good safety instructions and had plenty of cold beverages. He made some adjustments to accommodate my health and age impairments. Janot got me on a good Egyptian Goose that I shot for a mounter in the first 30 minutes of the hunt. Cons: Janot hunted me for only 3.25 hours instead of the contracted 4 hours. Janot took me to his "honey hole" and we found darn few iguanas; Janot even openly admitted that the City had very recently been in the "honey hole" to take out the iguanas. Instead of 1) taking me to another hunting area with a substantial number of shootable iguanas or 2) letting me know ahead of time that the City had all but wiped out the iguana crop so I could try to book another hunt with some other outfitter or 3) hooking me up with another outfitter, Janot chose to take me to an area he knew was nearly devoid of iguanas. And Yes, there was a few, but nearly all of the iguanas that we saw were less than 1.5 pounds. Prior to the hunt, Janot told me that I should be able to harvest 15-20 and maybe as many as 30 iguanas depending on how long it would take us to get me a goose. In 2.75 hours, he managed to get me 6 iguanas - a good 5 pounder, a tailless 4 pounder, two 1.25 pounders and two .75 pounders. We may have seen about 200 total iguanas of which about 28-30 were shootable. Of those 28-30 shootable iguanas, we harvested only 6, wounded about 14-15 that got away, and missed about 8-10. Janot did not have a retrieving dog which would have really helped with those wounded iguanas that made it into the water or that crawled away into an area where shooting wasn't possible but retrieval was possible. All in all, based solely on my hunt with Janot, I give Janot as a man a thumbs up. I give Janot as a boat captain a thumbs up. I give Janot as an outfitter a thumbs down. And I give the hunt two thumbs down. I would never ever book another hunt with Janot unless he paid my way back and forth to the hunt site from Montana and gave me a free hunt. This was an expensive hunt that was almost completely a bust !!! Janot could have and should have done much better! Kim Latterell Billings, Montana

I took the family (wife, 2 boys and grandma) for a 6 hour charter and had a great time with Captain Ron and the crew, Chris and Brian. They were friendly, safety conscious and knowledgeable. Listening to other boats on the radio that day, the fishing wasn't great yet we hooked a barracuda and a bonita almost as soon as we dropped lines. This was followed up with a nice size mahi that grandma fought 😂 (they cleaned dockside and we took home to eat), 3 more barracudas and an amberjack. Chris was on the ball with keeping bait fresh and when we had multiple fish on, he had complete control of the cockpit. Pick up and drop off was easy. The boat had A/C and a bathroom that was a must have given the family and on a hot day, this made all the difference. I'd rebook the charter.

Trip was fantastic, very knowledgeable guide. He knew all the best spots and taught me multiple new techniques. Caught multiple species on live bait, artificial, and I even caught my first fish on the fly. Absolutely amazing time. The shore lunch tasted fantastic!

Captain Carlos was awesome! He provided us with a great time on his boat for our iguana hunt. He had a great attitude, was very informative, and had a lot of patience since we were newbs to shooting iguanas. He definitely knows the area and what to do, but most importantly knows how to make the trip memorable. We would for sure book another tour/trip for a different adventure with him if we decide to come back to Florida. Thank you Captain Carlos! You’re the man.
