Fishing in Hilton Head Island

Fishing in Hilton Head Island
trip description for Backcountry Light Tackle & Fly in Hilton Head Island

The Redfish is the staple, year-round fish in the South Carolina Lowcountry and has proved to be the perfect gamefish. They can be sight fished on the fly or artificial lure on flood tide grass flats, mud and sand flats, or up tidal creeks at lower water levels. They can also be fished using live or cut bait. Other common species caught include Black Drum, Speckled Sea Trout and Flounder. Throughout the year some species are in more abundance than others and some seasons hold different surprises as migratory fish move through the area. Winter in the Lowcountry is special because the water can become gin-clear due to the lack of nutrients in the water with water temperatures in the upper 40s and 50s. Redfish will school up in large numbers and provide anglers with excellent sight fishing opportunities at lower tides As the water temperature begins to warm in the Spring baitfish begin to move into the interior waters. The food source becomes slightly more abundant and schools start to break up and spread out to more zones.  In April and May, the Cobia begin to show up to spawn in this estuary. The Cobia can be taken on the fly or artificial on the surface when weather and sea conditions line up. Summer months afford the angler the most variety.  In addition to Redfish, Black Drum, Sea Trout, and Flounder other species frequent a variety of scenarios. Ladyfish, Tripletail, Spanish Mackeral are all fun species to target on light tackle and fly but the big schools of large Jack Crevalle are high on the list of gamefish to be hunted this time of year when the sea conditions are calm enough. Tarpon also visit our water during Summer but are generally on the bottom in deeper water. Once the Fall season comes into play, we see relief from Summer temperatures, the baitfish mature, and the shrimp move into the creeks. It seems like everything gets fired up! Bull Redfish have a tendency to move back into estuarine waters to feed. When the water is calm enough Bull Reds can be targeted on the surface out in nearshore waters where they are spawning this time of year. So no matter what time of year there is always something buzzing aboard Captain Graham Skiff! It comes loaded with everything you could possibly need for success, so all you need to bring are your favorite snacks and drinks, and Captain Graham will show you what Hilton Head fishing is all about! trip description for Summer Time Offshore Fishing in Jacksonville

Fishing the offshore waters of North East Florida can be world class. Lots of options depending on the time of year and water temps. We usually break it down into two categories trolling and bottom fishing. Trolling we prefer using live bait and 30 lb. conventional tackle. Targeting king mackerel, cobia, bonita, barracuda, sailfish, mahi and sometimes even blackfin tuna. This all depends on conditions and the time of year we fish. Usually we start the day by throwing a cast net for live bait or stopping on a piece of structure to jig up some minnows using a sabibki rig. Once the baitwells are loaded its off to the fishing grounds. All depending on where the bite has been best is where we start to fish. Sometimes it can be a few miles out and other days we need to run 10-12 miles offshore. Bottom fishing can be wide open off of our coast as well targeting red snapper, vermillion snapper, black seabass, amberjack, grey grouper, cobia and triggerfish just to name a handful. The live bait can work very well on the bottom as well fresh cut bait and frozen bait. Until you have felt the fight of a mule snapper or a big amberjack it's hard to express in words how hard they pull. We use heavy conventional tackle (80lb.) as well as big spinning rods for the fishing these waters. Read More

trip description for Jacksonville Mixed Bag in Jacksonville

Jacksonville, Florida, also known as the River City, is home to some of the best inshore and near shore fishing on the east coast of Florida. The variety of local gamefish make this port a favorite for all types of anglers. So head out with Captain Travis aboard his 24ft Islamorada Boat Works Morada to chase inshore species like Redfish, Trout, Flounder, Cobia, and Tarpon (when there in the area) Its safe, smooth, dry ride will ensure a pleasurable day on the water regardless of conditions. Blending rough water capability with a shallow draft make it the perfect vessel for inshore charters in the River City. **4 Hour Trips:** This is Captain Travis' most popular option. This trip usually involves a morning or afternoon exploring the inshore waters using live and/or artificial baits, and spin-cast and/or sight casting techniques. Depending on the season, the most common species landed during these 4-hour trips include redfish, trout, black drum, flounder, sheep’s head, tarpon, and others. **6 Hour Trips:** This popular option will also involve a morning or afternoon of inshore fishing using the same techniques as the four charter, but also allows your captain additional time to locate the best possible fishing for that day or to possibly target multiple species. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this option may also allow Captain Travis to “run the beach” or to “spot lock” over one of Jacksonville’s many nearshore reefs and/or wrecks for a variety of other species including Sharks, Cobia, Red Snapper, Black Sea Bass, African Pompano and the occasional Grouper. **8 Hour Trips:** This option is for the serious angler. This is a full-day fishing trip using similar techniques as above, but more time equals more opportunities to catch fish. Moreover, depending on the season and weather conditions, this option may also allow Captain Travis to give you the best of both worlds, an inshore and near-shore experience, or just more time of either, depending on your preference or what is biting. Captain Travis will provide all the necessary fishing licenses, gear, ice and water for a successful day out on the water. All he recommends you bring are your favorite snacks and drinks, sunglasses, and some weather-appropriate gear. Above all, Captain Travis' main goal is to provide you with a great day on the water. So if your looking for a first-rate fishing experience in Jacksonville look no further and book your trip today with Captain Travis! Read More

Captain Don is truly a 5 star fishing guide. He's a better guy. I've been fishing for over 50 years, and as I hoped, Captain Don showed me several ticks and trips I'd never seen. No matter your experience level, he has something to help. We had a great day on the water, and had a great conversation. Darn fish just kept bugging us though.

We had a great time with captain frank. Due to the storms that rolled in weeks prior to our trip and a nor' easter, we had to make due with the areas we had available to fish. The booking process was very easy and we enjoyed our time on the water.

Had a great time with Captain Bill! Caught some big sharks right off the shore. He did a great job of helping us find and land fish when we had trouble finding reds at the beginning of the day. He also did a great job of making sure we were having fun through telling funny stories and not worrying about the time. Would recommend to anyone looking for a good time when they’re in St. Simon’s.

We had an unbelievable time with Captain James and I can't wait to fish with him again. Was in the area for a wedding and was looking to head offshore so we booked with James. He kept in touch leading up to our trip and let us know the kings were running. We headed out through the St. Mary's jetties and set up on the troll after catching some baitfish on the buoys. There were a couple other boats out and no one seemed to get a bite, the kings just weren't biting. From there, Capt. James took us to one of his snapper spots and we reeled em in on every drop. Everyone caught fish and James was super patient helping one buddy who was offshore for the first time. James was a blast to fish with and was super knowledgeable about the area and its history. His center console split the chop like butter. Will be back! - Jonathan with Captain Experiences

Our 6-hour in-shore fishing trip with Captain Billy was such a great time! He's definitely done his fair share of charters and we were lucky enough to catch quite a few fish. He followed all sizing restrictions and made sure we were on fish at every spot we went to. After, he showed us the proper way to clean fish. We will most definitely do another charter with him in the future.
