Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. The city's proximity to the Gulf of Mexico and a network of bayous and estuaries provides an abundance of diverse ecosystems, attracting a wide variety of inshore species. Redfish, speckled trout, and flounder are among the sought-after catches, each offering a distinct challenge and adding to the allure of inshore fishing in the region. Anglers can explore the expansive marshlands, casting into winding channels and among submerged grass beds to connect with these prized inshore species.

One defining aspect of inshore fishing in New Orleans is the opportunity to target the infamous and hard-fighting redfish. These bronze-colored bruisers are plentiful in the marshes and estuaries, providing anglers with an exciting challenge. Whether sight casting to tailing redfish in shallow water or working lures along the edges of marshy structures, the tactics employed in the pursuit of redfish add an element of strategy and skill to the angling experience. The unique combination of diverse habitats and the unmistakable New Orleans atmosphere make inshore fishing here a memorable adventure.

The inshore fishing seasons in New Orleans bring their own rhythm and excitement. Spring and fall are particularly fruitful, with rising and falling temperatures triggering the movements of various species. During the warmer months, the marshes come alive with activity as baitfish flourish, attracting predatory game fish. In contrast, the cooler months see certain species congregating in deeper channels and holes. Whether casting from the shoreline, exploring the bayous, or navigating the expansive delta waters, inshore fishing in New Orleans caters to a range of preferences, making it a haven for anglers seeking both variety and adventure in the heart of Louisiana's coastal paradise.

What species are most popular inshore fishing in New Orleans?

Inshore fishing in New Orleans promises a diverse and rewarding experience with a variety of species that thrive in the dynamic coastal waters. Redfish, often referred to as "red drum" in the region, are one of the premier targets for inshore anglers. These powerful and resilient fish inhabit the marshy estuaries, providing thrilling encounters and memorable battles. Sight casting for tailing redfish in the shallow waters or targeting them around submerged structures adds an element of strategy and excitement to the inshore fishing experience in New Orleans.

Speckled trout, or "specks," are another prized species that lure anglers to the inshore waters of New Orleans. Known for their tasty fillets and spirited fights, speckled trout thrive in the brackish waters of estuaries and marshes. Anglers often employ a variety of techniques, such as working artificial lures or drifting live bait, to entice these elusive predators. The challenge of locating specks in the vast and intricate marshland adds a level of skill and adventure to inshore fishing trips in the New Orleans area.

Flounder, with their distinctive flat bodies and ambush-style hunting, are also a popular inshore target in New Orleans. These stealthy predators often lurk near the sandy bottoms of channels and estuarine areas. Anglers may opt for techniques such as jigging or bouncing live bait along the bottom to entice flounder strikes. The versatility of inshore fishing in New Orleans, with opportunities to target redfish, speckled trout, flounder, and more, makes it a haven for anglers seeking a well-rounded and exciting fishing experience in the diverse coastal ecosystems of Louisiana.

What are the inshore fishing seasons in New Orleans?

In New Orleans, inshore fishing seasons unfold with a rhythm that aligns with the ebb and flow of coastal life. Spring marks the beginning of heightened activity as temperatures rise, signaling the awakening of inshore species. This season is particularly productive for anglers targeting redfish and speckled trout, as these fish become more active in the warming shallows. The lush marshes and estuaries come alive with the vibrant energy of baitfish, attracting predatory game fish and setting the stage for a fruitful inshore fishing experience.

Summer in New Orleans continues the inshore fishing excitement, offering longer days and warmer waters that entice a variety of species into the shallows. Redfish remain a primary target, and the marshes teem with life as anglers explore the maze of channels and flats. Speckled trout are also prevalent during the summer months, providing anglers with ample opportunities to test their skills in the art of inshore fishing. The warmer temperatures create an environment where both seasoned anglers and beginners can enjoy the diverse and thrilling experiences that New Orleans' inshore fishing has to offer.

Fall brings a different dimension to inshore fishing in New Orleans, as cooling temperatures prompt changes in fish behavior. The transitional period sees redfish and speckled trout feeding voraciously, preparing for the winter months. This season offers a unique blend of challenging angling and the chance to witness the stunning natural beauty of Louisiana's coastal landscapes. Whether casting into the marsh grass or exploring the tidal movements in the bayous, fall in New Orleans presents inshore anglers with a captivating and rewarding fishing experience.

What techniques are popular for inshore fishing in New Orleans?

Inshore fishing in New Orleans presents anglers with a variety of effective techniques to navigate the intricate waterways and target the diverse array of species inhabiting the region. Sight casting is a popular and exhilarating method employed by many anglers, especially when pursuing redfish in the shallow marshes. This technique involves visually locating fish, often by their tails breaking the water's surface, and making precise casts with artificial lures or live bait. The clear, shallow waters around New Orleans provide an ideal setting for this visually immersive approach, adding an element of strategy and excitement to the angling experience.

Working the marshy edges and submerged structures is another successful inshore fishing technique in New Orleans. Redfish and speckled trout often seek refuge and ambush points in the labyrinth of marshland, making accurate casting along these areas crucial for success. Artificial lures, such as soft plastics or topwater baits, are commonly used to entice strikes in these environments. Additionally, anglers may employ techniques like popping corks to present live bait effectively, creating enticing movements that attract predatory fish in the shallows.

Drifting and trolling are effective techniques for covering larger areas of water in the expansive marshes and bayous around New Orleans. This method is particularly useful for targeting species like speckled trout and flounder. Anglers drifting with live bait or casting artificial lures can explore different depths and structures to locate feeding fish. Trolling along channels and drop-offs is also productive, especially when targeting speckled trout, as they often follow baitfish along these underwater features. The diverse techniques available cater to a range of preferences, making inshore fishing in New Orleans an exciting and dynamic experience for anglers of all skill levels.

We had a good day on the water with Mike! A weather front was moving through the area on our day to fish, so consequently the bite was inconsistent. We were able catch several fish, bringing in 8 fish to clean. The fish we caught were spotted trout and white trout. I was hoping to catch a sheep head and some red fish, but they were not biting that day. The highlight of the day was catching a small stingray. I’ve never seen one in the wild before so that was pretty neat. Of course we had to release him. I have been with many guides and Mike was very professional.

James is a true captain that has the fisherman in mind at all times. First he knows the area and is safe. He worked hard to get us on fish and we tried several areas before we were successful. He found the fish though and then we stayed to get some in the box. I have been on many fishing trips and James is at the top of my list. He is personable and cares about his clients. If your looking for a quality experienced Captain look no farther than James.

Had a great day with Seth despite the weather. I was only in town for 1 day and could not reschedule so we decided to go out and make the best of it. We caught a nice 22" redfish on first cast and after a few hours work we had another 22" and a fat 27" redfish in the boat. Seth stayed positive the whole day as we tried different spots and techniques. Will definitely fish with him again, hopefully in better weather.
