Everything to Know About Booking a Fishing Charter in Southport

What is fishing in Southport all about?

Fishing in Southport offers a diverse and rewarding experience for anglers of all skill levels. Located in southeastern North Carolina, Southport is known for its scenic beauty and abundant waterways. The area features a variety of fishing environments, from the saltwater of the Atlantic Ocean to the tranquil estuaries and rivers like the Cape Fear River. These waters are home to a wide range of fish species, making Southport an appealing destination for both casual and serious anglers.

Inshore fishing is particularly popular in Southport, where anglers can target species such as red drum, speckled trout, and flounder. The area’s estuaries and backwaters provide ideal conditions for these species, with plentiful baitfish and favorable habitat. Additionally, the Cape Fear River offers opportunities for fishing along its banks or from a boat, with the potential to catch larger game fish like striped bass and catfish.

For those interested in offshore adventures, Southport’s proximity to the Gulf Stream makes it a great location for deep-sea fishing. Charter boats are available for trips into deeper waters, where you can fish for species like tuna, mahi-mahi, and marlin. The mix of inshore and offshore options ensures that Southport has something for everyone, whether you’re looking for a relaxing day on the water or an exhilarating sportfishing experience.

What are the most popular months to go fishing in Southport?

Fishing seasons in Southport are defined by the migration patterns

Fishing seasons in Southport are shaped by the migration patterns of various fish species and the changing weather conditions throughout the year. Spring is a particularly exciting time, as the warmer temperatures bring fish like red drum and speckled trout into the estuaries and nearshore waters. This season is ideal for anglers looking to enjoy active fishing with the added benefit of comfortable weather and blossoming scenery.

Summer in Southport offers prime opportunities for both inshore and offshore fishing. Inshore, you’ll find species such as flounder and black drum becoming more active, making for productive fishing. Offshore, the warmer waters of the Gulf Stream attract larger game fish, including tuna, mahi-mahi, and billfish. The long days and typically calm seas during summer make it a popular time for both recreational and charter fishing trips.

As fall approaches, fishing in Southport continues to be robust. Many species remain active, and the cooler temperatures can lead to increased fish activity. This is a great time to target migrating species and enjoy less crowded fishing spots. Winter brings cooler weather, which can slow down the fishing, but it’s still possible to catch species like striped bass and other cold-water fish. Each season in Southport offers unique fishing experiences, making it a versatile destination for year-round angling.

What types of fishing are popular in Southport?

Fishing in Southport offers a variety of techniques and methods to match different preferences and skill levels. Inshore fishing is popular, utilizing methods such as live baiting and artificial lures to target species like red drum, speckled trout, and flounder. Anglers often fish from boats or along the shoreline, using techniques like bottom fishing or drift fishing to find the most active fish. Light tackle is commonly used in these waters, allowing for a more enjoyable and engaging experience.

For those seeking a deeper challenge, offshore fishing in Southport is a rewarding option. Charter boats can take anglers out to the Gulf Stream, where trolling is a popular technique for catching larger game fish like tuna, mahi-mahi, and billfish. Trolling involves dragging lures or baits behind the boat at various speeds to attract and hook these species. Deep-sea fishing also includes techniques like bottom fishing and jigging, which target different species residing in deeper waters.

Additionally, Southport’s estuarine and river systems provide opportunities for fly fishing, particularly in the spring and fall when fish are more active. Fly anglers can use specialized flies that mimic local baitfish or crustaceans to entice species such as red drum and speckled trout. This method requires skill and precision, making it a rewarding pursuit for experienced anglers. Whether you prefer inshore, offshore, or fly fishing, Southport offers diverse options to cater to various fishing styles and interests.

What species are popular for fishing in Southport?

When fishing in Southport, you have the opportunity to target a wide variety of fish species depending on the time of year and your fishing location. Inshore waters are particularly rich with species such as red drum, speckled trout, and flounder. Red drum, also known as redfish, are a popular catch due to their size and fighting ability. Speckled trout are known for their delicate flavor and are commonly found in the estuaries and nearshore waters. Flounder, with their unique flat bodies, are often caught near the bottom and are prized for their mild, sweet taste.

As you venture further offshore, the Gulf Stream offers a different set of opportunities. Here, you can target larger game fish like tuna, mahi-mahi, and marlin. Tuna, especially species like yellowfin and blackfin, are sought after for their size and the challenge they present. Mahi-mahi, or dolphinfish, are known for their vibrant colors and are popular among anglers for their aggressive strikes and delicious flavor. Marlin, including both blue and white varieties, are prized trophies and provide an exhilarating challenge for sport fishermen.

In the cooler months, fishing in Southport can also yield species like striped bass and black drum. Striped bass are known for their strong fight and are a favorite among anglers seeking a freshwater-like experience in brackish waters. Black drum, which can grow to impressive sizes, are often found in the estuaries and offer a good fight as well as tasty meat. Each season brings different opportunities and challenges, making Southport a dynamic fishing destination throughout the year.

What are the best places to fish in Southport?

Southport boasts several prime fishing spots that cater to a variety of angling preferences. One popular location is the Cape Fear River, which offers diverse fishing opportunities from its banks or by boat. The river is known for its productive fishing, with species like striped bass, catfish, and red drum commonly found here. The mix of fresh and saltwater conditions in the river creates an ideal environment for a range of fish, making it a favored spot for both experienced and novice anglers.

The estuaries and marshes around Southport are another top destination for inshore fishing. Areas such as the Lockwood Folly River and the Shallotte River provide excellent habitat for species like speckled trout, flounder, and red drum. These waters are accessible by smaller boats or even from the shore, and their rich, productive environments offer ample opportunities for a successful fishing trip. The shallow, grassy flats and oyster beds in these estuaries are particularly good for targeting flounder and other bottom-dwelling species.

For those interested in offshore adventures, Southport’s proximity to the Gulf Stream makes it an ideal location for deep-sea fishing. Charter boats depart from the local marinas and head out into the Gulf Stream, where you can fish for larger game species such as tuna, mahi-mahi, and marlin. The waters just offshore provide a great balance between ease of access and the chance to catch impressive fish, making it a popular choice for those looking to experience the thrill of big-game fishing. Whether you’re fishing inshore, exploring the estuaries, or venturing offshore, Southport offers a range of locations to suit different fishing styles and preferences.

We had a fantastic time. Caught lots of fish and enjoyed talking to Jason. He put us on fish immediately and moved to another location if the fish stopped biting. Never had time to eat the snacks we brought. Will book with Jason the next time we go fishing

Had an absolutely amazing day with Captain Jamie. He's incredibly knowledgable about fishing and the area and super personable. The fish were a little slow to bite at first but Jamie went above and beyond to try different spots he knows and put us on some fish. The mackerel started biting and we ended with the day with a full cooler! All of us were new to fishing and he was very good with beginners and answered all of our questions. Couldn't recommend a day with him strong enough!

    Trip: Wilmington Inshore Fishing Special

My brother and I had a terrific fishing experience with Judd in mid-May. Great equipment, personable and clear communication - plus Judd's experience and judgement made the whole trip a relaxing and fun time all around for our early season exploration of inshore fishing opportunities now that we both live much closer together. We enjoyed a variety of fishing techniques - Judd knows a lot about fish and where to find them as well as when to go looking. Our inexperience showed, but Judd coaches well - patiently - until we got to connecting regularly with especially the many speckled trout opportunities. Sight-fishing for redfish, which Judd expertly located, was also new for us - we had a blast and definitely hope to try again! Kudos and thanks for the quality of this trip, Judd!
