Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What is bull shark fishing in Rockport all about?

Bull sharks, known for their aggressive nature and formidable size, are occasionally encountered in the waters around Rockport, Texas. These apex predators are highly adaptable and can thrive in both freshwater and saltwater environments, making them capable of traversing the brackish coastal waters near Rockport. While bull sharks are not as common as some other shark species in the area, encounters with these powerful predators can occur, particularly in the warmer months when they may venture closer to shore in search of prey.

Fishing for bull sharks in Rockport requires specialized gear and techniques due to their size and strength. Anglers targeting bull sharks typically use heavy-duty tackle such as stout rods, large reels, and wire leaders to handle the powerful runs and aggressive behavior of these predators. Live or fresh baitfish, such as mullet or bonito, are commonly used to attract bull sharks, as their strong scent and natural movements can entice strikes. Additionally, chumming techniques may be employed to create a scent trail and attract bull sharks to the area.

Encounters with bull sharks in Rockport can provide anglers with thrilling fishing experiences and the opportunity to test their skills against one of the ocean's top predators. However, it's essential for anglers to exercise caution and practice responsible catch-and-release practices to ensure the conservation of bull shark populations and the safety of both anglers and the sharks themselves. By understanding the habits and behaviors of bull sharks, anglers in Rockport can increase their chances of encountering these impressive creatures while contributing to the sustainability of the marine ecosystem.

What are the most popular months to fish for bull shark fishing in Rockport?

Bull shark seasons in Rockport, Texas, typically coincide with warmer months, spanning from late spring through early fall. During this time, water temperatures rise, creating favorable conditions for bull sharks to become more active and abundant in the area's coastal waters. Bull sharks are known to migrate along the Gulf Coast, following baitfish migrations and seeking optimal feeding grounds, which often brings them closer to Rockport's shores during these seasons.

Spring marks the beginning of the peak bull shark season in Rockport, as water temperatures start to rise and baitfish populations increase. Bull sharks migrate along the Gulf Coast during this time, following the movements of baitfish schools and seeking optimal feeding grounds. Anglers targeting bull sharks in Rockport during the spring months can expect increased opportunities to encounter these powerful predators near reefs, oil rigs, and other offshore structures.

As summer progresses, bull shark fishing in Rockport remains productive, with peak activity often occurring in June, July, and August. During these months, bull sharks can be found patrolling nearshore waters, particularly around baitfish-rich areas such as jetties, channel markers, and nearshore reefs. Anglers venturing offshore may also encounter bull sharks around deeper structures and along migration routes. However, as water temperatures begin to cool in the fall, bull sharks may migrate southward to warmer waters, signaling the end of the peak fishing season in Rockport.

What techniques are popular for catching bull shark in Rockport?

Fishing for bull sharks in Rockport, Texas, requires specialized techniques and gear due to the strength and size of these apex predators. Anglers targeting bull sharks typically use heavy-duty tackle, including stout rods, large reels, and wire leaders, to handle the powerful runs and aggressive behavior of these sharks. Live or fresh baitfish, such as mullet or bonito, are commonly used to attract bull sharks, as their strong scent and natural movements can entice strikes. Additionally, chumming techniques may be employed to create a scent trail and attract bull sharks to the area.

One effective method for bull shark fishing in Rockport is surf casting from the shoreline or wading in shallow waters. Anglers use heavy spinning or conventional rods paired with sturdy reels and wire leaders to withstand the strength of bull sharks. Fresh or live bait is often cast beyond the surf zone to attract sharks patrolling nearshore waters. This method allows anglers to cover a large area of water and locate actively feeding bull sharks, particularly during peak seasons when these predators are more abundant.

Another productive technique for bull shark fishing in Rockport is kayak fishing. Anglers launch from the shoreline or designated launch points and paddle out to deeper waters where bull sharks are known to congregate. Once in position, anglers drop baited lines using heavy-duty tackle and wire leaders, allowing the bait to drift naturally with the current. Kayak fishing offers anglers the advantage of accessing offshore areas where bull sharks may be more abundant, providing thrilling fishing experiences and the chance to reel in these formidable predators.

Whether targeting them with live bait, artificial lures, or fly fishing techniques, anglers can expect thrilling encounters with these iconic fish in Rockport's productive waters.

Speckled trout are commonly found in the bays, estuaries, and grass flats surrounding Rockport, where they feed on shrimp, baitfish, and crustaceans. Anglers can target speckled trout using a variety of techniques, including live bait fishing, artificial lure fishing, and fly fishing. With peak seasons typically occurring in spring and fall, speckled trout provide anglers with exciting opportunities to test their skills and enjoy the thrill of hooking into these prized game fish.

For those seeking offshore adventures, Rockport offers opportunities to target species such as flounder, snapper, and kingfish in deeper waters. We had a great trip with Corey. In spite of strong winds forcing us to less productive areas, we caught 6 assorted keepers - including a couple of 25" reds - and released a bunch more. Corey was very friendly and accommodating, and his boat was very comfortable and well equipped.

Jason was great. Fishing started out slow on the long baits. So Jason set out some poles out in the surf for my son to catch some pup sharks. My son caught three and this kept him engaged. Then the big reel started screaming. All in all great morning.

First off Danny communicated well about where to be and what time the day before our excursion. Once we got started it was clear that he was very knowledgeable and knew where to go to maximize our fishing efforts. Him and his deck hand made sure that our family of 4 always had a baited pole in our hands and were ready to grab any fish that we caught! We would absolutely go fishing with Danny again!

Captain Corey was fantastic! Went out of his way to get the “right” bait (which it was!). We caught enough fish, on a really windy day, for the kids to have wonderful memories. He’s great with kids, has plenty of interesting stories and just a pleasure to be around. Book with Corey! You won’t regret it!

Awesome fishing trip! Booked two days back to back for my boys and extended family, but was canceled on a month out and pushed to Captain Corey. Turned out to be the best thing that could have happened! Captain Corey was super available, coordinated and communicated well in advance, adjusted trips to give us the best experience. First day was slower (cold weather) and he adjusted timing to make it awesome. Limited out second day because of him!!! Haven’t met a team yet that will work as hard as he did to put us on fish and ensure we had fun! Like fishing with family! We will book with him each time from here on out. Thank you.

We did not have a good experience. The seas were very rough, we got sea sick, completely drenched and my husband fell out of his wheelchair when the boat hit a big wave at about mile 13 or 14. He was stayed seated on the floor of the boat as we attempted to continue out. After about 1.5 hours, we were less than 20 miles out, we decided to ask the captain to turn around.

Had a Member of our group get very ill and not only was James's first thought his safety but we cut our trip short and he even discounted the fees. Very thankful and will use them again. I can't put the review in and not mention Daryl, his mate, as well. To notch crew!!
