Everything to Know About Booking a Virginia Beach nearshore fishing charter

What are the best nearshore fishing charters in Virginia Beach?

What is nearshore fishing in Virginia Beach all about?

Nearshore fishing in Virginia Beach, Virginia, offers anglers a rich and varied experience along the Atlantic Coast, renowned for its diverse marine life and productive fishing grounds. Situated at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay, Virginia Beach provides access to a range of nearshore habitats, including sandy beaches, artificial reefs, and coastal structures like piers and jetties, which attract a wide variety of fish species throughout the year. One of the primary targets for nearshore anglers in Virginia Beach is the striped bass, locally known as rockfish. These prized game fish are famous for their strong fights and excellent table fare. Anglers typically use live bait such as menhaden (bunker), eels, or spots, as well as trolling with umbrella rigs or casting with plugs and jigs, to entice strikes from these elusive fish.

Flounder are another popular species sought after by nearshore anglers in Virginia Beach. Found in sandy or muddy bottoms near the shore, flounder are known for their unique flat shape and camouflage ability. Anglers target flounder using techniques such as bottom fishing with live bait like minnows, squid, or mullet, as well as jigging with bucktail jigs or soft plastics. Flounder fishing is particularly productive in the spring and fall, when these fish migrate inshore to spawn or feed, making them a favorite among anglers looking for a tasty catch.

In addition to striped bass and flounder, Virginia Beach offers opportunities to target a variety of other nearshore species, depending on the season and local conditions. Species such as bluefish, Spanish mackerel, and red drum can be found patrolling nearshore waters around shoals, inlet mouths, and artificial reefs. Anglers use a variety of techniques, including casting with spoons, trolling with diving plugs, or live bait fishing, to target these high-energy fish. Whether fishing from a pier, surfcasting from the beach, or heading out on a charter boat, Virginia Beach provides anglers with a rewarding nearshore fishing experience and the chance to catch a diverse range of prized fish species along its picturesque coastline.

What are the most popular months to go nearshore fishing in Virginia Beach?

Nearshore fishing seasons in Virginia Beach, Virginia, offer anglers a dynamic and varied calendar of opportunities throughout the year, influenced by seasonal migrations and water temperatures along the Atlantic Coast. Spring kicks off the fishing season with the arrival of striped bass, locally known as rockfish, as they migrate from their wintering grounds. Anglers target striped bass using a variety of techniques, including trolling with umbrella rigs, live bait fishing with menhaden (bunker), eels, or spots, and casting with plugs and jigs around coastal structures like jetties and piers. Spring also sees the arrival of other species, such as flounder, which move closer to shore to spawn, providing anglers with productive bottom fishing opportunities using live bait and jigs.

Summer brings warmer waters and a diverse array of pelagic species nearshore in Virginia Beach. Species like Spanish mackerel, bluefish, and cobia are commonly found patrolling the coastal waters and nearshore reefs. Anglers use techniques such as trolling with spoons and diving plugs, as well as casting with jigs and live bait fishing, to target these fast-swimming predators. Bottom fishing for species such as black sea bass and croaker also remains productive during the summer months around artificial reefs and offshore structures.

Fall is another productive season for nearshore fishing in Virginia Beach, as water temperatures cool and seasonal migrations bring new opportunities. Striped bass return to the area as they migrate southward, providing anglers with exciting fishing opportunities along the coast and around the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Techniques such as live bait fishing, trolling, and casting with artificial lures continue to be effective for targeting striped bass and other species like speckled trout, red drum, and flounder that are active in the cooler waters. Overall, Virginia Beach's nearshore fishing seasons offer anglers a diverse range of opportunities throughout the year, with each season presenting unique challenges and rewards in the scenic waters of the Atlantic Coast.

What techniques are popular for nearshore fishing in Virginia Beach?

Nearshore fishing in Virginia Beach, Virginia, offers anglers a variety of techniques and methods to target a diverse range of species that inhabit the productive waters of the Atlantic Coast. One popular method is surf fishing, where anglers cast lines from the sandy beaches along the coast to target species like striped bass, bluefish, and flounder. Anglers typically use surf rods and reels with heavy-duty tackle to handle the surf conditions and cast baits such as cut bait, shrimp, or sand fleas. Adjusting sinker weights and using fishfinder rigs can help present baits effectively in the turbulent surf zones where fish often feed.

For those fishing from piers or jetties, pier fishing is another productive nearshore fishing technique in Virginia Beach. Anglers can cast from elevated platforms into deeper waters to target species like Spanish mackerel, sheepshead, and black drum. Using lighter tackle and live bait such as shrimp or squid, as well as artificial lures like spoons and jigs, anglers can entice strikes from these nearshore species that congregate around pier pilings and structures. Pier fishing allows anglers to cover different depths and explore areas where fish are known to gather, providing opportunities for both novice and experienced fishermen alike.

Boat fishing in Virginia Beach's nearshore waters is also popular, allowing anglers to access offshore reefs, wrecks, and artificial structures where fish species like flounder, black sea bass, and tautog reside. Techniques such as bottom fishing with cut bait or jigging with bucktail jigs and soft plastics can be effective for targeting these bottom-dwelling species. Trolling with diving plugs, spoons, or umbrella rigs is another effective method for targeting pelagic species such as striped bass, bluefish, and Spanish mackerel that migrate along the coast and around offshore shoals. Thanks for the trip had fun and the first mate was awesome. He made sure the kids had fun and how to use all the equipment and educated everyone. The welds on the boat were spectacular. Captain took the time to talk with the kids and made it a great time. I would recommend this trip to anyone in the area. Thanks again Mark and Tom

CPT John is a highly experience captain and fisherman who put us right on the tuna and tile fish. We landed 4 nice yellow fin and our limit of blue tile fish. Though he operated a smaller offshore boat, it performed perfectly and safely in 3-4 foot seas 30 miles offshore. He even dressed our fish upon return. I higjly recommend CPT John for any fishing excursion.

We had a memorable experience. While pre-ttip communication could have been better and the boat condition now versus photos on the website, we caught all we wanted. Good fun and Mate Tom was knowledgeable and accommodating.
