What is fishing in Mexico all about?

Fishing in Mexico is a diverse and exciting experience, with a variety of locations and species to target. The country’s extensive coastline, stretching along both the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, provides ample opportunities for anglers. On the Pacific side, destinations like Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, and Mazatlán are renowned for their exceptional sport fishing. Here, anglers can pursue big game species such as sailfish, marlin, and tuna, thanks to the rich marine life and favorable conditions. These areas attract both amateur and experienced fishermen looking for thrilling offshore adventures.

The Gulf of Mexico offers its own unique fishing opportunities, with areas like Cancun and Playa del Carmen being popular spots. In these waters, anglers can target species such as tarpon, snook, and grouper. The inshore fishing around the Yucatán Peninsula provides excellent opportunities for light tackle fishing, while the offshore waters offer chances to catch larger species. The region’s warm waters and diverse fish populations make it a favored destination for a variety of fishing styles and techniques.

Mexico’s freshwater fishing is also noteworthy, with numerous lakes and rivers offering excellent opportunities for catching species like bass, trout, and catfish. Lakes such as Lake Chapala and Lake Baccarac are well-known among freshwater anglers for their abundant fish and beautiful settings. Whether you’re fishing in the expansive coastal waters or enjoying a quiet day on a serene lake, Mexico’s diverse fishing environments ensure that there’s something for every angler to enjoy.

What are the most popular months to go fishing in Mexico?

Fishing seasons in Mexico vary depending on the type of fishing and the specific region, offering a range of opportunities throughout the year. On the Pacific coast, the prime season for offshore fishing generally runs from May to December. During this period, anglers can target big game species like sailfish, marlin, and tuna, as the warm waters and rich marine life create optimal conditions for these catches. The peak months of July to September are particularly notable for sailfish and marlin, making this a popular time for sport fishermen in renowned locations such as Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta.

In the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean, fishing is productive throughout the year, with some seasonal variations. Tarpon fishing, for instance, is most effective from April to September, when these large, powerful fish migrate through the region. Inshore fishing around places like Cancun and Playa del Carmen remains strong throughout the year, with opportunities to catch species like snook and grouper. The summer months can be particularly good for inshore fishing due to warmer water temperatures and increased fish activity.

Freshwater fishing in Mexico follows its own seasonal patterns, with the best times varying by location and target species. For example, bass fishing in lakes such as Lake Chapala and Lake Baccarac tends to be most productive during the cooler months from October to April, when fish are more active and feeding. Trout fishing in higher altitude lakes and rivers can also be excellent during these cooler periods. Overall, Mexico’s diverse fishing environments provide ample opportunities throughout the year, ensuring that anglers can enjoy a variety of fishing experiences regardless of the season.

What types of fishing are popular in Mexico?

Fishing in Mexico offers a wide range of techniques and methods, catering to various angling preferences across its diverse environments. Offshore fishing is a major draw, with trolling being one of the most popular techniques. Anglers often use this method to target big game species like sailfish, marlin, and tuna by dragging lures or bait behind a moving boat. This technique is especially effective in the nutrient-rich waters off the Pacific coast, such as around Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta, where large pelagic fish are abundant.

Inshore fishing in Mexico includes techniques like casting, bottom fishing, and fly fishing. Casting with live bait or artificial lures is commonly used to target species such as snook, tarpon, and grouper in the coastal estuaries and mangrove areas. Bottom fishing, where weights and bait are dropped to the sea floor, is effective for catching snapper, grouper, and other bottom-dwelling species. Fly fishing enthusiasts can also enjoy targeting species like bonefish and permit in the shallow, sandy flats of the Yucatán Peninsula, where the clear waters provide excellent sight-fishing opportunities.

Freshwater fishing in Mexico involves techniques such as casting with artificial lures, jigging, and using live bait. Lakes like Chapala and Baccarac are popular for bass fishing, with anglers employing various methods to catch largemouth and smallmouth bass. Jigging, which involves repeatedly lifting and dropping a jig to mimic prey, is a common technique for targeting bass and other freshwater species. Live bait fishing, using worms or minnows, is another effective method for both bass and catfish. The variety of techniques available across Mexico’s fishing environments ensures that there are options for every angler, whether they prefer the excitement of offshore battles or the tranquility of freshwater fishing.

What species are popular for fishing in Mexico?

Fishing in Mexico offers an impressive array of species, catering to different angling interests. Offshore, the country is famous for its big game fish, particularly sailfish, marlin, and tuna. Sailfish are a major draw for sport fishermen, known for their acrobatic displays and powerful runs. Marlin, including blue and black varieties, also provide thrilling challenges due to their size and strength. Yellowfin tuna are another popular target, prized for both their fighting ability and their quality as table fare. These species are most abundant during the prime offshore fishing season from May to December.

Inshore fishing in Mexico provides opportunities to catch a range of species such as snook, tarpon, and grouper. Snook, found in the coastal estuaries and mangrove areas, are known for their aggressive strikes and strong runs, making them a favorite among light tackle anglers. Tarpon, often targeted in the warmer months, are renowned for their impressive jumps and powerful fights. Grouper species, which dwell around rocky reefs and structures, offer a robust challenge and are highly valued for their delicious taste. These inshore species can be pursued year-round, with varying peak times depending on the location.

Freshwater fishing in Mexico features species like black bass, tilapia, and catfish. Lakes such as Lake Chapala and Lake Baccarac are known for their abundant bass populations, providing excellent fishing opportunities for both largemouth and smallmouth bass. Tilapia are commonly found in these freshwater environments and are sought after for their versatility and taste. An amazing trip! 3 couples set out for a 6-hour experience on the Sea of Cortez - we were not disappointed...caught 2 marlins, one of which was the largest catch of our lives at 150 pounds. Jaime was great, he set us up quick and easy. Got our fishing licenses at the marina on the morning of our trip. Coming back again next year...

Leonardo was fantastic with communication and letting us know the weather. While unfortunately the weather wasn’t good enough for the port to be guaranteed open during our trip, Leonardo did his best to get us out there as safely as possible for 3 different days. I can’t speak for the fishing, but for everything else Leonardo was a 11/10.

Ariel and Alexis were amazing captains. Ariel is completely bilingual and has so much experience fishing for 17 years in PV but also all over the world. He was super adaptive — he worked with us to do a lot of different types of fishing (we trolled, we jigged) and all in we caught almost 40 fish with just two of us!! He also gave us an opportunity to add on a trip to Yelapa where they cooked our fresh fish, and it was not only delicious but such a unique experience. Ariel was super communicative and flexible, too. Would highly highly recommend Ariel to anyone who wants to catch a lot of fish, learn about the area and have an amazing time out on the water.

Excellent captain and experience; highly recommend! Although we only caught a few, he’s a great guy, trustworthy and also helped us with some local restaurant recommendations and connecting us with some of his local friends. Five Stars all the way. I will be a repeat customer.

We had a blast with Captain Jorge and Alex. Started the morning off with coffee and breakfast tacos as we headed out in search of Mahi off the Pacific side of Cabo. Caught a couple of keepers and some smaller tuna, then took our fresh Mahi over to Alexanders right across from the marina where they cook the fish a few different ways. Definitely recommend hopping on any of the trips Jim and team offer!

I’ve always wanted to catch a tarpon on the fly. It’s been on my bucket list for years, so when we planned our trip to Cancun, I look for an opportunity after booking the trip I was obviously excited to get the chance to fill one of the things on my bucket list, however, when I didn’t plan on, was getting very sick, just a few hours before Orlando, my guide was picking me up. As bad as I felt, I went and waited in the lobby for him to arrive. He had to go through a lot of trouble to get through security, but when I met him, he was all smiles. As we rode through the city to his boat I didn’t say a word, because I felt so ill, and after loading the boat and headed out under the water, it was only a matter of moments before he put me on fish, in my weakened state, I could barely throw the fly. However, he kept pointing out fish after fish, and after a few times resting, I finally filled that bucket list. Orlando was so patient with me and very generous. Not only was he an excellent guide he was a very, very good guy. I hope one day I can go back and fish with him again when I feel better Orlando worked very hard to get me on fish , and if I felt better, I’m sure I would’ve caught several more. We did catch more than that one but because I was so sick I laid in the bottom of the boat mostly. It wouldn’t have mattered if we didn’t catch fish I think I would’ve enjoyed spending the time on the water with Orlando. he genuinely wants you to catch fish. In my second state, he couldn’t tell how excited I was but I could sure tell how excited he was. Thanks again Orlando!! Tight lines!!!

The trip was amazing. They don’t lie when they say you don’t come in unless you catch a fish. I took my 8 year old. We trolled deep see for 5 hrs had 2 separate 100 to 150lb sailfish attacking the bait. Unfortunately no hook set but no worries. Travis and the guys took us closer inshore for an hour on the way back and my son reeled in 2 big triggerfish 2 yellow snapper a barracuda and an amberjack. So finishing stony with 6 fish and seeing the two sailfish chasing the bait was awesome. Not to mention your catching live bait pretty much the whole time.

I highly recommend Orlando. The communication before the trip was great and he went the extra miles (literally) to pick me and drop me off at my hotel so I didn't have to mess around with early morning taxi or Uber. Fishing was tough but we got some baby tarpon on fly and when conditions weren't suitable for fly rod we switches to spinning rod and caught more. Also got to see some remote backwater and the resident crocodiles. Made you think twice before putting hand in water to retrieve a snagged fly!

FIVE STARS AMAZING! I booked my first every deep sea fishing guide for myself and two other fishing experts so the pressure was on and I had no idea what I was doing. Luckily Captain Experience was so easy, the selection was great, the signup process through to the day of instructions and QR code was a breeze. We had the most amazing time! I got the impression we received special treatment from the crew by booking through Caption Experience. I will 100% use this service again, no stress and a guaranteed great time. Thank you all so much for all your help, it was a fantastic day I wont soon forget. Can't wait to book another trip!

The trip itself with my guides was more than I could have hoped for. Not only were they extremely helpful, put us on fish, and instructed well, but they even took pictures for us, gave us a history of the Tulum Ruins and gave us a little snorkeling adventure with stingrays and sea turtles. This entire part was a 5/5 stars. The disappointing part 1/5 stars was the whole reason I booked through Capt. Experiences. According to the booking through this website the total trip was supposed to be $650. I paid "$97" through the website for a deposit. That came out to $130 on my credit card. When I showed up, I still had to pay the full "$650.00" in order to go on the trip, thinking that deposit was more of a holding fee like a deposit on a rental car. Nope, that was also added to the price, now I'm at $750 for this trip. The QR code that was supplied to me to pay the rest. The gentleman at the desk said he doesn't need that. I explained the deposit situation and he insisted his price was correct. Cool, way to vet the companies Capt. Experiences. Now for the Icing on the cake. When I went to the actual company webpage the same trip costs $550! So, you have guarantied that I will never use this service again and let others know of my experience of being ripped off, from a company that says they find the best which would include not getting ripped off. I get paying more as paying more, you're cost being $650, I was ok with that, even though $100 for your service was a bit steep, but hey, you guaranty the companies are vetted and only the best. That should be worth something. But, Oh wait, I still got ripped off. Never again. Total waste of time and money.
