Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What is flats fishing in Key Largo all about?

Flats fishing in Key Largo offers anglers a rich and diverse experience in one of Florida's most renowned fishing destinations. Situated amidst the expansive flats of the Florida Keys, Key Largo provides abundant opportunities to target a variety of prized species in shallow, clear waters. One of the main attractions for flats fishing enthusiasts is the bonefish, known for its challenging nature and impressive speed. Bonefish are often found cruising sandy flats and seagrass beds, where they feed on small crustaceans and baitfish. Anglers typically use light spinning tackle or specialized fly fishing gear, presenting small flies or live shrimp with delicate casts to entice these elusive fish.

Tarpon are another iconic species that lure anglers to Key Largo's flats. These large, silver-scaled fish migrate through the area during certain times of the year, offering thrilling opportunities for anglers seeking a battle with one of the ocean's strongest game fish. Tarpon can be found near channels, flats edges, and mangrove shorelines where they feed on schools of baitfish. Anglers often use live bait such as mullet or crabs, or cast large plugs and jigs to tempt tarpon into striking. The excitement of hooking into a tarpon, with its aerial acrobatics and powerful runs, makes flats fishing in Key Largo a memorable and exhilarating experience.

Redfish, also known as red drum, are another popular species to target in Key Largo's flats. These hard-fighting fish are commonly found around mangrove islands, grassy flats, and shallow bays where they search for crabs, shrimp, and small fish. Anglers use a variety of techniques such as live bait presentations or casting soft plastic baits and topwater lures to attract redfish. Their distinctive bronze coloration and aggressive strikes add to the allure of flats fishing in Key Largo, providing anglers of all skill levels with opportunities for exciting catches and memorable fishing adventures amidst the stunning coastal scenery of the Florida Keys.

What are the most popular months to go flats fishing in Key Largo?

Flats fishing in Key Largo follows distinct seasonal patterns that influence the behavior and availability of various fish species throughout the year. Spring marks the beginning of a vibrant fishing season as water temperatures rise and marine life becomes more active. Species like bonefish and tarpon start to migrate back into the flats and nearshore waters, offering anglers excellent opportunities to target these sought-after game fish. Anglers often use live bait such as shrimp or small crabs, as well as artificial lures like flies or plugs, to entice these species during their seasonal movements.

Summer in Key Largo brings warmer waters and longer days, creating optimal conditions for flats fishing. Tarpon continue to be a popular target, particularly during their peak migration periods. Anglers concentrate on channels, flats edges, and mangrove-lined shorelines where tarpon gather to feed on schools of baitfish. Summer also sees an increase in activity from bonefish, which become more aggressive in their feeding habits as they prepare for spawning season. Anglers adjust their strategies based on tidal movements and weather patterns, using drifting techniques and adjusting bait presentations to maximize their chances of hooking into these powerful fish.

As fall approaches, flats fishing in Key Largo enters a transitional phase characterized by cooler temperatures and changing fish behaviors. While tarpon begin their migration southward, bonefish and redfish remain active targets in the flats. Redfish can be found around mangrove islands and grassy flats, where they continue to feed on crustaceans and small baitfish. Anglers adapt their techniques accordingly, using light tackle and presenting baits or lures that mimic natural prey movements. Fall offers anglers a quieter fishing experience amidst the scenic beauty of Key Largo, providing ample opportunities to enjoy the sport and natural wonders of the Florida Keys.

What techniques are popular for flats fishing in Key Largo?

Flats fishing in Key Largo offers anglers a variety of techniques tailored to the unique conditions of shallow coastal waters and the diverse fish species found in the area. Sight fishing is a favored method, particularly effective for targeting elusive species like bonefish and permit. Anglers often pole or quietly wade through the shallow flats, carefully scanning the clear waters for signs of fish movements. Using light tackle and delicate presentations such as small flies or live shrimp, anglers can tempt these wary fish into striking. Sight fishing requires patience, sharp observation skills, and the ability to make accurate casts to capitalize on brief opportunities when fish are within range.

Fly fishing is highly popular among anglers in Key Largo, especially for pursuing bonefish, permit, and tarpon. Fly fishing gear is specialized for accuracy and distance, allowing anglers to cast lightweight flies that mimic the natural movements of shrimp, crabs, or baitfish. The clear, shallow waters of the flats provide ideal conditions for sight casting, where anglers can spot their targets and present their flies with precision. Fly fishing adds an element of finesse and skill to flats fishing, appealing to anglers who enjoy the technical aspects and artistry of the sport.

Drift fishing is another effective technique in Key Largo's flats, particularly for targeting larger species like tarpon or redfish. This method involves drifting quietly with the current or wind while presenting baits or lures along the edges of flats, channels, or near mangrove islands. Anglers use live bait such as mullet or crabs, as well as artificial lures like plugs or soft plastics, adjusting their presentation based on tidal movements and fish activity. Drift fishing allows anglers to cover more ground and explore different habitats, increasing their chances of encountering and hooking into the diverse range of fish species that inhabit Key Largo's flats.

Captain Andrew. Aka drew. What can i say. From the very start he communicated with us he wanted to make sure we had time to cast net some great bait and he did. Hardest working guide ive ever seen. And im 60 so seen quite a few. Andrew put us on fish all day long. Incredibly knowledgea le about the entire area and fishing area. Lol. Plenty of mangrove snapper a couple barracuda and a bull shark. All day. Fun day. Now im tired. Took my wife to just hang out. She loved it. Great fishing trip with this man. Mike and Tami. Chris is an awesome guide. Real Miami native who knows the bay better than anyone. He really cares about fishing and he is not on a hard "trip ending" time. Chris also suggested some local Miami restaurants and took us there after our trip. A certified damn good guide in my book.

Great day out with Captain Billy B that I strongly recommend. When I said I wanted to catch trout, I was not expecting to catch over 50 on a 6 hour trip. Not only does Captain Billy know his fishing spots in the Everglades but he will also take the time to teach you how to improve your techniques. How to catch a fish at almost every cast. am sure he is great with kids. If you are looking for a monthly rental, or even buying a house in the area, he is also your man.

Incredible fishing! I’ve never had the experience where I cast my line and within 5 seconds I get a strike. Over and over, it was constant cast and strike. Caught 20 fish in the first hour. Not only an expert guide for fishing, but Patrick is a really nice person to hang out with. Super chill to talk sports and fishing, but was cool and professional. He also recommended an awesome place for lunch where they grilled our catch! Top notch, highest recommendation possible!
