What is inshore fishing in Key Largo all about?

Inshore fishing in Key Largo, situated within the Florida Keys, offers anglers a captivating blend of vibrant marine life and pristine coastal landscapes. Known as the "Sportfishing Capital of the World," Key Largo's inshore waters teem with a diverse array of fish species, making it a paradise for fishing enthusiasts. Anglers can target an impressive range of fish, including tarpon, bonefish, snook, and redfish, among others. These species thrive in the shallow flats, mangrove-lined creeks, and channels that characterize Key Largo's inshore fishing grounds.

One of the highlights of fishing in Key Largo is the opportunity to target the elusive bonefish, renowned for their speed and challenging fights. These prized game fish are commonly found in shallow, clear waters along sandy flats and grassy areas, particularly during incoming tides. Anglers often employ stealthy approaches and lightweight tackle, using live shrimp or crab patterns as bait, or casting small jigs and flies to entice bonefish into striking. Fishing for bonefish requires patience and skill, making it a rewarding pursuit for those seeking a thrilling angling experience amidst the tranquil beauty of Key Largo's backcountry.

Snook are another popular target in Key Largo's inshore waters, known for their aggressive strikes and habitat preference near mangrove shorelines, docks, and bridges. These ambush predators are most active during dawn and dusk, making those times ideal for targeting them with live bait such as pilchards or mullet, or artificial lures like jerkbaits and swimbaits. Anglers enjoy the challenge of enticing snook out from their cover and testing their skills in landing these powerful fighters against the backdrop of Key Largo's stunning coastal scenery.

What are the most popular months to go inshore fishing in Key Largo?

Inshore fishing seasons in Key Largo offer anglers a year-round opportunity to pursue a variety of species in its rich coastal waters. Spring kicks off the fishing season with warming temperatures that bring species like tarpon, bonefish, and permit into the shallows. Anglers often target tarpon during their annual migration, using live mullet or crabs, as well as large flies or lures, near channels, flats, and bridges where these silver kings congregate. Spring also sees the peak season for bonefish and permit, prized for their challenging fights and elusive nature in the clear waters around Key Largo's flats and mangrove edges.

Summer in Key Largo brings warmer waters and longer days, influencing fish behavior and movement patterns. Early mornings and late evenings are favored times for fishing as temperatures are cooler and fish activity increases. Species such as snook and redfish become more active along mangrove shorelines, channels, and around structure like docks and bridges. Anglers typically use live bait such as pilchards or mullet, and artificial lures like topwater plugs or soft plastics, to target these predatory fish. Adjusting techniques based on tidal movements and water clarity is key to success during the summer months.

Fall marks a transition period in Key Largo's fishing calendar, characterized by mild temperatures and changing fish behaviors. This season is highly anticipated as species like bonefish and permit remain active, while redfish and snook feed voraciously in preparation for winter. Mangrove shorelines, tidal creeks, and flats become productive areas for anglers using techniques such as drift fishing with live bait or casting artificial lures. As water temperatures gradually cool, fish become more active throughout the day, offering ample opportunities for memorable catches amidst Key Largo's stunning coastal landscapes.

What techniques are popular for inshore fishing in Key Largo?

Inshore fishing in Key Largo offers anglers a variety of techniques tailored to its unique coastal environments, making it a prime destination for both seasoned anglers and novices alike. One popular method is flats fishing, which involves poling or quietly drifting in shallow, clear waters to target species like bonefish, permit, and tarpon. Anglers use light tackle and specialized flies or small live bait such as shrimp or crabs to entice these elusive fish known for their speed and challenging fights. This technique requires precision casting and keen observation to spot fish cruising the flats.

Another effective technique in Key Largo is mangrove fishing, which focuses on targeting species like snook and redfish that frequent the sheltered areas around mangrove roots and branches. Anglers navigate their boats or kayaks close to these structures, using live bait such as pilchards or mullet, or artificial lures like jerkbaits and swimbaits, to draw strikes from these ambush predators. Mangrove fishing requires skill in accurate casting and maneuvering in tight spaces, offering anglers the thrill of hooking into powerful fish amidst the scenic backdrop of Key Largo's mangrove-lined shorelines.

Dock and bridge fishing is also popular in Key Largo, particularly for species like snook and tarpon that seek refuge and feeding opportunities around pilings and structure. Anglers typically use live bait such as pinfish or shrimp, as well as jigs or diving plugs, to target these fish in deeper waters near docks and bridges. This technique requires patience and careful presentation to avoid snagging on structure while enticing strikes from these wary and powerful game fish. Dock and bridge fishing in Key Largo offers anglers a chance to experience urban angling amidst the natural beauty of the Florida Keys' coastal waters.

Captain Andrew. Aka drew. What can i say. From the very start he communicated with us he wanted to make sure we had time to cast net some great bait and he did. Hardest working guide ive ever seen. And im 60 so seen quite a few. Andrew put us on fish all day long. Incredibly knowledgea le about the entire area and fishing area. My wrist and right arm are a bit sore from catching so many fish. The big target today for me was Snook. He put us on them. I lost 2 in slot snook in the mangrove roots probably 28 to 30. But caught at leat 5 in the 24to 27 inch range and another 8 in the 14 to 22 or so. Always busy always catchin and fi ding them. We also caught some big jack cravele big ones. Make your arm hurt. Lol. Plenty of mangrove snapper a couple barracuda and a bull shark. All day. Fun day. Now im tired. Took my wife to just hang out. She loved it. Great fishing trip with this man. Mike and Tami. Chris is an awesome guide. Real Miami native who knows the bay better than anyone. He really cares about fishing and he is not on a hard "trip ending" time. Chris also suggested some local Miami restaurants and took us there after our trip. A certified damn good guide in my book.

I highly recommend Anthony if you want to fish out of Key Largo. He was obviously respected by the other guides we met while we were fishing and demonstrated a great knowledge of the local water and the best places to find different species of fish. Additionally, he had excellent equipment that was in very good shape. This includes his boat. Even more important was his willingness to conduct the type of trip I wanted for my grandchildren's first fishing trip. He is also extremely affable and fun to be with. If I go back to the Keys, I won't look for a different guide. I will just call Anthony and ask, "What's biting?".

Great day out with Captain Billy B that I strongly recommend. When I said I wanted to catch trout, I was not expecting to catch over 50 on a 6 hour trip. Not only does Captain Billy know his fishing spots in the Everglades but he will also take the time to teach you how to improve your techniques. How to catch a fish at almost every cast. am sure he is great with kids. If you are looking for a monthly rental, or even buying a house in the area, he is also your man.
