Hunting in Port Mansfield
trip description for Duck Hunt in Port Mansfield

A duck hunting trip from Port Mansfield aboard an airboat offers an unparalleled adventure for waterfowl enthusiasts. The unique capabilities of the airboat allow access to remote marshes and shallow waters in the Lower Laguna Madre, creating the perfect conditions for a successful hunt. The rich diversity of duck species in this area, including red ducks, pintails, green-winged teal, blue-winged teal, mottled ducks, bluebills, and northern shovelers, promises an exciting and rewarding experience. As dawn breaks, the airboat, loaded with gear and eager hunters, departs from Port Mansfield. The air is crisp and the anticipation is palpable. The powerful airboat skims over the glassy water, navigating through narrow channels and over shallow flats with ease. The journey itself is exhilarating, as the boat maneuvers through the intricate maze of marshes and bayous, taking you to secluded hunting spots inaccessible to traditional boats. Arriving at a prime location, the airboat glides to a stop in a secluded cove surrounded by tall reeds and mangroves. The guide expertly sets up decoys, mimicking a small flock of ducks to attract passing birds. Concealed in a well-constructed blind, you settle in, scanning the horizon as the first light of day begins to illuminate the landscape. The first ducks to appear are often green-winged and blue-winged teal, darting across the sky in rapid, agile flight. Their small size and swift movements make them a challenging target, but also highly rewarding. As they approach the decoys, you take aim, the thrill of the hunt surging through you as you successfully bring down a teal. Next, the distinctive silhouette of northern shovelers and pintails become visible against the morning sky. The northern shoveler, with its broad, spatula-shaped bill, and the elegant pintail, with its long neck and pointed tail feathers, add variety to the hunt. These ducks are known for their wary nature, requiring patience and skill to lure them into range. The satisfaction of successfully bagging these ducks is immense, a testament to your marksmanship and the effectiveness of the decoy setup. As the day progresses, mottled ducks and bluebills, also known as scaup, make their appearance. Mottled ducks, with their distinctive mottled plumage, often fly low and fast, while bluebills are known for their speed and maneuverability. The challenge of adapting to the flight patterns of different species keeps the hunt dynamic and engaging. Red ducks, or redheads, are another prized target. These striking birds, with their vibrant red heads and gray bodies, often travel in large flocks, providing multiple opportunities for shots. The excitement of seeing a flock of redheads approaching, their wings whistling in the wind, is a highlight of the trip. Throughout the hunt, the airboat's versatility shines. Its ability to navigate shallow waters and reach isolated spots ensures that you are always positioned in prime hunting areas. The airboat also allows for quick relocation if needed, maximizing your chances of encountering various duck species. As the sun climbs higher in the sky, signaling the end of the morning hunt, the airboat heads back to Port Mansfield. The journey back is filled with the camaraderie of shared stories and the satisfaction of a successful hunt. The diverse array of ducks harvested showcases the rich bounty of the Lower Laguna Madre and the effectiveness of the airboat in accessing this prime hunting ground. A duck hunting trip from Port Mansfield aboard an airboat offers an unforgettable experience. The combination of high-speed travel, access to remote and productive hunting areas, and the thrill of pursuing a wide variety of duck species makes this adventure a must for any waterfowl hunter. The memories of this unique and exhilarating hunt will stay with you long after the season ends. Read More

What is fishing in Linn all about?

Fishing in Linn, Texas, offers a charming and accessible experience for anglers looking to explore the region's aquatic environments. Located in the Rio Grande Valley, Linn is near several bodies of water that provide diverse fishing opportunities. The local lakes and reservoirs, such as Lake Falcon, are popular spots where anglers can target a variety of species. Lake Falcon, in particular, is known for its excellent bass fishing, with largemouth bass being a primary draw. The lake’s structure, including submerged brush and rocky areas, creates favorable conditions for bass fishing throughout the year.

In addition to bass fishing, Linn's proximity to the Rio Grande River offers opportunities for those interested in river fishing. The river is home to species such as catfish, tilapia, and various sunfish. Catfish, in particular, are abundant and can be targeted using a range of baits, from live worms to cut bait. The river's gentle currents and varied depths make it a versatile location for different fishing techniques, including bottom fishing and float fishing.

The local fishing scene in Linn is further enhanced by the warm climate of the Rio Grande Valley, which allows for fishing throughout the year. The mild winters and hot summers mean that anglers can enjoy fishing without the restrictions of harsher weather conditions. Whether you are fishing in Lake Falcon, exploring the Rio Grande River, or checking out other local spots, Linn offers a range of fishing experiences that cater to different preferences and skill levels.

What are the most popular months to go fishing in Linn?

Fishing in Linn, Texas, is influenced by the region's warm climate, which provides opportunities throughout the year. In spring, the rising temperatures and increasing daylight hours trigger a surge in fish activity, particularly in local lakes like Lake Falcon. During this season, largemouth bass move into shallower waters to spawn, making it an ideal time for anglers to use techniques such as casting soft plastics and spinnerbaits near vegetation and submerged structures. Spring is also a great time for targeting other species like crappie and catfish as they become more active with the warming water.

As summer sets in, the warm weather in Linn continues to support a productive fishing environment. However, the heat can cause fish to seek cooler, deeper waters, so anglers may need to adjust their techniques accordingly. In Lake Falcon, fishing in the early morning or late evening can yield better results as bass and other species are more active during these cooler parts of the day. Summer is also a good time for targeting catfish in the Rio Grande River, where they can be found in deeper, shaded areas or near structure.

In the fall, the cooling temperatures bring a shift in fish behavior as they prepare for the winter months. Largemouth bass and crappie become more active again, feeding heavily in preparation for the colder season. This is a great time for anglers to use a variety of baits and techniques to capitalize on the increased feeding activity. Fall can also be a productive season for river fishing, with species like catfish continuing to be active in the Rio Grande River. As the weather cools, fishing conditions remain favorable, making it a pleasant time to enjoy the local waters in Linn.

What types of fishing are popular in Linn?

Fishing in Linn, Texas, offers a range of techniques and styles due to the variety of local water bodies. At Lake Falcon, one of the primary fishing spots in the area, bass fishing is a popular pursuit. Anglers often use techniques such as casting with soft plastics, spinnerbaits, and crankbaits to target largemouth bass. The lake’s structure, including submerged brush and rocky areas, provides ideal conditions for these techniques. For those targeting crappie, jigging with small jigs or using live bait such as minnows can be effective, especially around submerged structures and in the lake’s deeper waters.

In addition to lake fishing, the Rio Grande River near Linn offers opportunities for river fishing with different techniques. For species like catfish, bottom fishing with baits such as worms, cut bait, or stink bait can be productive. The river’s gentle currents and varied depths make it suitable for techniques such as drift fishing or using a float rig to keep bait at the desired depth. Anglers might also use slip bobbers or casting lures to target species like tilapia and sunfish, which are often found in shallower, slower-moving parts of the river.

For those looking to explore different fishing styles, Linn’s warm climate allows for year-round fishing, accommodating various techniques throughout the seasons. Fly fishing can be effective in the Rio Grande River, particularly for targeting sunfish and other smaller species. Additionally, night fishing can be a rewarding experience, especially for catfish, which are known to be more active during the cooler evening hours. Whether fishing in the lake or the river, Linn offers a range of techniques to suit different preferences and skill levels.

In addition to bass, Lake Falcon also supports populations of crappie, which can be caught using jigs or live bait around submerged structures.

The Rio Grande River, which flows near Linn, offers a different set of fishing opportunities. Catfish are a major draw in the river, with species like channel catfish and flathead catfish being commonly targeted. Anglers often use bottom fishing techniques with baits such as worms, cut bait, or stink bait to attract these fish. Do you want to go fishing or catching? That is a question Captain Jeremiah will definitely answer for you with a resounding "We're going Catching!". He and his boat, The Classic, are based out of Port Isabel where Captain Jeremiah grew up and acquired the skill, knowledge and love for fishing. You might think that you are just going fishing, I mean catching; however, with Captain Jeremiah, you get a lesson on the past, present and future of Laguna Madre, Long Island, Brownsville Ship Channel and the surrounding area, as well as, an occasional sea turtle, shark and dolphins sightings. But let's talk about why are here.....Fish! Captain Jeremiah knows just the right areas to hit and will put you right on top of those Big Reds and then it's time to work it hard. The four of us limited out in the slot range in about three hours, but we were having a blast catching and releasing those that didn't meet the slot requirement....sometimes four hooked at the same time. The last hour, before we headed back to port, was spent trolling which produced a nice Spanish Mackerel and a pretty large Ling. Trust me, next time I go out on a Fishing Charter, it will be with Captain Jeremiah on his Catching Charter!
